>almost 60 hours in>just got the old manso when does this game actually start getting good? am I in for another 50 hours of "save this random boring village that has nothing to do with anything, then go do it again for another puzzle piece"? why do japs think this is good game design? why do I keep giving this series a shot? is there ANY title in this series with an interesting story, good characterization and good pacing? so far Ive played half of VII, VIII, IX, XI, I, II, and III and none of them are even close to FFIV-X level. I and III were the only ones I modestly enjoyed, the rest were chores that I barely tolerated. why do I have nothing better to do? when will I finally "get it"? why are jrpgs my favorite genre but this supposed holy grail never clicks? I have so many questions.
>>11495596it gets good when you beat itbecause its a painful excruciatingly long game that has a ton of maddening things to test your patience but when you beat it you will have proven that you are a true dragon warrior7
Try Dragon Quest VI. It’s considered the black sheep of the series, so if you didn’t get hooked by the rest of them it might do something better for you. And yeah the PSX version of VII is way too slow paced for it’s own good.
>>11495596>so when does this game actually start getting good? These kinds of threads are funny and all, but just stop playing dude.
>>11495648bro if I quit now then all those hours are for nothing.>>11495647havent tried it yet but those pixel graphics are LOOKIN' GOOD, unironically. this and dq3 snes are definitely the prettiest titles.
>>11495670dq7 enemy battle animations are pretty cool
>>11495670If you keep going you're going to lost another 60 to a game you're not enjoying.
>>11495678just frustrating because I really enjoyed the beginning. even with no combat I thought it was setting up an epic story and I was interested. then it just becomes a treasure hunt with nothing but lame side stories for like 40 hours, AND they take away the best party member because reasons.
>>11495647I don't get why dq6 gets so much hate. It was my first dq and I loved it. My biggest complaint is that the "dream" world looked way too similar to the "real" world so I constantly got lost.
>>11495689You really are just best walking away if it's that displeasing to you. Maybe just let the save sit for a while and come back if you find yourself thinking about it sometime down the line.I totally agree with you on the beginning. This was my first real JRPG as a kid. I think I had only played Mystic Quest before begging for DQVII at Kmart randomly. I have no idea why I wanted it so bad. I think I didn't have a problem with the long opening because I didn't have any understanding of what a JRPG is or how they're usually paced at that point. I loved everything about that sequence.I don't agree your other points, though. I really like the episodic nature of restoring the islands, and the past and present stuff. Kiefer's story was legitimately impactful to me back then. But, again, I didn't know what JRPGs were so I wasn't conditioned to be annoyed with games shuffling around or permanently removing my party members.I'm a gigantic faggot who would say this is one of his favorite games but has never beaten it. Not even the 3DS version, which I was really excited for, but I ended up burning out by accidentally grinding grottos or whatever they called them. I should actually boot up the original when my new handheld comes in.
>>11495670>bro if I quit now then all those hours are for nothing.I bet you say that when you're 9 hours deep into a goon session too.
Japanese pastime you'll never understand. You need to be ethnic Japanese to get DQ
>>11495772Tim Rogers gets it
>>11495772I wonder if westaboos in japan say this about halo and GTA
The real test of taste isn't whether you like 7, it's whether you like 2
>>11495647>It’s considered the black sheep of the serie)no it's not 6 is much better than 5 (the reddit-core slop of the series)
7 is not a good game. I think when people see the commercial and critical reception of 7, plus the fact it's on an advanced console, and they just assume it must be amazing. But this isn't really true. 1-5 are far better games, and I would much rather recommend them. Not only because I genuinely think they are more well-made, but also because they are more significant to the genre, and it is in your better interest to experience them.
>>11495596>he doesn't like being a herowhy are you even playing Dragon Quest games, retard?
>>11495670>bro if I quit now then all those hours are for nothing. They already are for nothing. You're playing a fucking video game. You're not actually accomplishing anything meaningful. You're sitting on your ass, pressing buttons to make colorful lights appear.
>>11495596Ah, Dragon Quest VII, the "game of some time" indeed. You’ve hit the point where existential dread sets in. The "when does this get good?" phase is part of the experience. The pacing is glacial, and you’re right—save a random village, get a puzzle piece, rinse, repeat, of some time. That’s just how it rolls. The satisfaction is supposedly in the world-building, but if you’re not into it by now, it’s probably not going to click.Honestly, the series as a whole is an acquired taste of some time. The storytelling is more subtle, and the games lean heavily on tradition over spectacle. If you’re looking for FFIV-X level pacing, drama, and character arcs, DQ is almost always going to disappoint. VIII is charming but slow. XI? Polished but derivative. The rest? Either grindfests or nostalgia trips for some time. Why do Japs think this is good design? Because in Japan, DQ isn’t just a game—it’s a ritual of some time. It’s less about innovation and more about comfort food. You grind, you save the day, you pat a slime on the head, and life goes on.Maybe try playing something like Chrono Trigger again to cleanse your palate? Or dig into something with a little more narrative oomph like Xenogears or Persona. But hey, props for giving DQ a fair shot. Maybe someday it’ll hit you like a ton of bricks. Or maybe not, and that’s okay too—of some time.
>>11495596Sorry you put so much time into it. VII is not a game you should be playing if you don't already feel strongly about Dragon Quest.
>>11495860Based!
>>11495793Nah, GTA has a precense in Japan.>>11495728The picaresque nature of DQ is it's major structural innovation. I agree with you.
>>11496420>7 is not a good game>1-5 are far better gamesi can turn a blind eye to a faggot hating on 7 but you suggesting that 6 is not as good as 1-5 when it's actually much better than all of them combined cannot be toleratedgo jump off a bridge you poser, DQ is not for you
>>11495596If you just got Melvin then you're not really that far from the end and it really doesn't get much better than what you've seen.
>>11495860Try it again with less buzzwords
>>11496538>>11495860>least popular entry is actually the best, everything popular is slop!Yeah this is a 4chan thread, alright. VI is a fine game but far from the best in the series.
>>11496615>least popular entrythat's 2 and you don't even have the right to sit on on it because i know you poser never played it
>>11496538>Shit take but I'm also ANGRY and pretending I'm not aloneBravo
>>11495670Sunken cost fallacy. Those hours are gone and never coming back. The best thing you can do at this point is stop wasting any more time.
>>11495596It was good the entire 123 hours for me.
>>11495670Dragon Quest VI feels very much like a prototype for VII when you play it after VII. I highly doubt you'll enjoy it.
>>114964207 > 4 > 6 > 3 > 5 > 2 > 1
>>11498420>Dragon Quest VI feels very much like a prototype for VIIIt should. They were made by the same developers, who unlike the developer for DQ1-5 decided that quantity was more important than quality.
The story with the robot that keeps serving his master 1,000 years into the future after he dies makes me tear up
>>11498463Except 1-5 aren't that high quality in the first place, other than 4.7 for sure is both quantity and quality, strong contender for best DQ
>>11496538Not him, but 6 was my least favorite. You need to grow up and accept that other people have opinions that differ from yours.
>>11498503Why won't he eat the soup, bro?
>>11498514>Except 1-5 aren't that high quality in the first place, other than 4.Yes, we get it, you're here because you're a massive contrarian.
>>11498514>>11498974NTA but completely agree with the take. DQM was my first when I was really young, but Six was the first I /really/ played, and I hated it so bad I quit halfway through for three years straight before forcing myself to finish it. It's so stupidly bloated, yet nothing ever happens, game just never fucking ends.Moment I tried 4, though, infinitely better, legitimately good RPG, tightly designed and always doing something different. 5's just okay, it's got a fantastic start but mostly just devolves into the standard from there, whereas 4's structure means you never have that settling period; 7, meanwhile, is obviously just an expansion of the ideas in 6, and while those ideas are inherently better than the halfassed visually indistinct dreamworld, it's even /more/ bloated, like twice over.TL;DR dragon quest as a series is just spotty as hell, it just got props for being super early and introducing mon-catching mechanics that have since been iterated on to the point of obsolescence. Who cares about recruiting DQ5 monsters when the cool ones have 1/256 chances and the only one that matters is the healslime with multiheal?
>>11498997>It's so stupidly bloated, yet nothing ever happensBecause it's one gigantic metaphor for self actualization. The plot of the game is "find yourself, but like, literally" and "chase your dreams, but like, literally". Just as in life, there are very few moments where your entire life changes all at once, most of us are shaped by events we barely remember. Total Nigger Death.
>>114985143 is awesome and better than 4.
>>114989741 and 2 are very dated, you're the contrarian if you think those are better than any other game in the series.3 and 5 both are massively overrated, especially 5>>11499129Nah, 4 is much better due to having actual characters for party members and an interesting way of telling it's story with you playing as everyone else first and then traveling the world as the hero and meeting them. 3 is just alright, the class system has been done better in every other DQ with one, and having a party of nobodies makes things more boring. I guess maybe the big appeal rides entirely on how much you care about it being a prequel to 1 and 2, but to me 9 is just a better 3 and still not amazing by any means.
>>11499185>actual charactersAnd they're all retarded in combat.
>>11499201Remakes fix that.
>>11499229And ruins the dialogue.
>>11499527*improves
>>11495596NOOOO I CAN'T STOP PLAYING A GAME I DON'T ENJOY I HAVE TO CONSOOM IT I NEED TO BE PART OF THE COOL KIDS CLUB
>>11499535I cannae agree wit' yah.
>>11495860Really 7 is the black sheep if anything. Also 5 has a worse class system sure but it's even the series creator's favorite entry in the series. Besides, if you're gonna throw around those buzz words you have to admit that 5 if anything would be the most based and trad out of the whole series. It's literally about establishing a family to destroy a malevolent force. You couldn't ask for a more family positive message. The game literally is about the power of love creating something better than yourself. You're arguably not the main character and instead the Son is because he's the prophesied hero. I say all of this as someone who enjoyed 6 more as well.
>>11500069Not him, but the fact that DQ5 is mostly monsters instead of actual party members is part of why I consider it the weak link of the Zenithia games.
>>11500079That's what makes it based you god damned dumbass idiot retard nigger
>>11500085Nah, it just makes me feel like I don't give a shit about the party beyond expendable grunts. I feel the same way towards most Pokemon.
>>11500094How can you not get attached to your little monster buddies?
>>11500095My problem is I never want to let go of my bros after I get the family back together
>>11500095It's hard for me to feel attached when I know I can always just release them and catch more if I don't like them.>>11500096Ehhh, I'm kinda iffy on the family since the bride wastes most of the game being dead weight and the kids are mostly just there to be the MacGuffins. I'd rather have more bros like Prince Harry fighting at my side. His arc is probably the one part I legit liked.
