>collect 120 power stars>obtain 120 shine sprites>secure 100 jiggieswhere the fuck do I go from here? Ive tried dabbling with tooie, lara, crash and spyro and theyre not half as fun. please help me fill the hole in my heart, /vr/. surely there is at least one game in this genre as fun as 64, sunshine and kazooie.
Give Sonic Adventure a go I guess
>>11495898sonic adventure 1 and 2 have both aged like absolute milk. I loved them both as a kid but now its pretty dire ... sonic heroes and shadow the hedgehog are even worse somehow. 3d sonic was a mistake
>>11495905Then try Rayman 2 and 3
>>11495908ok ill try that next, never played any game in that series. thank you for the recc
>>11495874Jak & Daxter maybe? You should really try to finish Tooie, it's peak
>>11495910I made it to the dinosaur stage in tooie. really started feeling more like an adventure/zelda/metroid game more than a platformer, just wasnt liking it nearly as much as 1. but I will give it another go
>>11495909Np, Rayman 3 is my favorite. But it's not a collectathon though, just a linear platformer with combat>>11495915NTA but Jak and Daxter is also more of an adventure platformer, imagine if there were no load times between the areas in Sunshine and the game was kinda 'semi-openworld', that's Jak and Daxter
Sounds like you don't actually like 3D platformers, only Mario games. Try Mario Party, Mario Kart, or perhaps some of the sports titles. Banjo also has a sequel on GBA most people don't talk about which is pretty good imo if you like the smaller scale of Kazooie. Finally, if you don't like DK64, remember there's also Diddy Kong Racing. Same with Crash, check out CTR.
If you want 3D platformers that moved past the collectathon era, give the Sly and Jak games a try. Specifically the second and third games in each series, the originals we're still heavily inspired by the Mario 64/Banjo design blueprints Also the Prince of Persia games should be considered platformers imo, they actually have platforming unlike half the games in this genre
>>11495874honestly the only thing that comes close IMO is the non retro sequel(s) to sunshine (I dare not speak its name in this place)
Go play Rocket: Robot on Wheels for the 64.
>>11495874>>11495874/v/ people might redirect you to A Hat in Time which is obviously not retro, but there is a rom hack that allows you to play as Hat Kid which switches also the gameplay up a little bit. Pretty neat imo. There's also Super Mario 64 DS>>11495905Sonic Robo Blast 2 just got ported to 32X and is literally Classic Sonic in 3D.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0iwiFvnvQIThere's also hacks for both playable Sonic and Cream in Super Mario 64.
>>11495983>sm64 dsI love the extra content they added but holy fuck those digital controls are a huge downgrade. totally ruins the #1 reason 64 is so fun in the first place.
>>11495874I really liked Tomb Raider when I played it, but then I'm not a big platformer fan. While it isn't a 3D platformer, try the first two Oddword games. I'd argue Abes Exoddus is the best 2D platformer experience I've had.
>>11495874honestly I've turned towards romhacks, I still have a few mainline Mario games to play but the quality of some are insane. give Star Road a try as a first romhack imo, it's basically Super Mario 64 2
>>11495968I've noticed this trend with nintendo fans, they end up hating anything that isn't mario or zelda, it's really bizarre.
>>11495874I know you didn't like Crash much, but I personally like the style and find that a lot of Crash clones from the era were just as fun, if not more, depending on your tastes. Try out Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers, Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase, and Lilo & Stitch: Trouble in Paradise, they're a really fun time.
>>11495905>3d sonic was a mistakeBut we just had the goat on the genesis??
>>11495874Get into rom hacks for the obvious ones. There's a million mario 64 hacks, and there's one guy who makes very high quality banjo hacks
>>11495910I'll second Jak and Daxter (1 only mine you), the movement and platforming is so much better than many of it's contemporaries. It'd also be good at scratching your collect-a-thon itch
Tomb Raider (1996) Ape Escape (1999)Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001)Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (2002)Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (2003)I think other anons might be on the money though, that you just like Mario and Mario-clones rather than 3D platformers as a whole. There's a world of difference between something like Jumping Flash, Tomb Raider or Mirrors Edge and collectathon platformers like Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie. Try a Hat in Time, Nintendo fans who can't seem to find joy outside of their brand really seem to get a lot out of that one, maybe its the Sunshine vibes. Its pretty good but rough around the edges.
>>11497925One more, try the original Ratchet & Clank. I always felt it had a bit of a Mario 64 influence in there somehow. Multiple objectives and paths in any given level, that sort of thing. Its the least linear of the entire series and has the largest emphasis on platforming. The later ones are much more combat heavy but R&C1 balances the shooting, exploration and platforming very nicely.
Duck Dodgers N64 is underrated. It's powered by a pretty sophisticated physics engine
>>11495874For a game that was so popular, I find it weird how hard it's to find a good rehash of what worked in SM64. I think you'd have to be super lucky to find a similar enough game.
give Gift on PS2 a try.
>>11497960There's surprisingly few games that try to rehash SM64 in general. Even Nintendo only made Sunshine along the same lines, and outside of Nintendo the closest game I can think of is Vexx.
>>11495874Sly 2
>>11495874check out jumping flash! and it's sequel, they're both short but a lot of funvery different style than your marios, but the tank controls and big jumps give you a great sense of weight and momentum
>>11497140Sonic 3D Blast's genuinely underrated, it's an excellent isometric/3D collect-a-thon platformer with level design that's fun to explore. It's a decent translation of 2D Sonic's aesthetics and gameplay into "3D" for the hardware and the time, fun to play.
>>11495874I don't think you'll like any because 3d platformers by and large don't have the acrobatics system Mario has.
>>11495905>2 aged like absolute milktardo
>>11499595A lot of Sonic games are significantly better than even the fans would lead you on to believe.
Saru Getchu 3 / Ape Escape 3 is my favorite game in the "digital playground" genre. It's happy and fun and I love the way it looks and sounds. Not only is there a lot of variety from stage to stage, you can play each stage in different ways. You can use the costumes and zip through the levels at record speeds, or focus on stealth and gadgets and the game becomes like a Duplo version of Metal Gear, and both ways are very fun.It also has Sayaka in it, which elevates the game to masterpiece-level, at least for me.
>>11495874Dr. Muto
>>11499595Sweet jesu that looks horrible without dithering. It 100% did not look like that when I played it on CRT as a kid
