Nah, I've been actively lurking these threads for about a year now.
I was being ironic with that first post, but I'm actually interested in it for up to ps2 games and the 1080p screen might be nice with moon light.
Seems good enough to run AZ video recording with whatever the replay buffer is to record gameplay.
The only thing that looks bad is that it's on the slightly pricier end, the battery life, and the sleep mode loses like 35% overnight.
>>

Maybe if you have things running in the background. I close everything and lose only a few percent every night.

What's the cheapest handheld that can play Game Boy/GBA ROMS with little to no emulation glitches? I've been looking at various Anbernic models but nothing stands out to me. I have several original Game Boys but I want something worthless I can carry around with me. What do you guys recommend?

What are some handhelds with interesting designs?
I don't care about getting an "ultimate toy". I'm far more interested in handhelds that are different, odd or just plain cool.
Stuff like:

>Anbernic RG Nano Mini
>PlayDate

What comes to your mind?

not necessarily. nes is an 8:7 ratio at 256x224 pixels, there are a variety of possible resolutions that fit that ratio without being an integer multiple or 256 or 224. if you're scaling up the image to fit the borders of at least one dimension of the screen while maintaining the aspect ratio, it's probably non-integer scaled.

Pocketgo 2 was their best device. Literally just the rg350/gamekiddy350 without a retarded price for a mips device.

The s30 sucked.

Given crop overscan it does 3x integer.

>>
>>11497712
>but it prevents you from changing a bunch of settings
>i'm using it right now and i've not had this problem
Not that guy, doesn't let me set aspect ratio on custom, probably because of the core overrides.
The defaults are dumb, no other OS I used puts save/states in its own folder for example. And some of the stuff has me editing overrides by hand. Unfortunately, Knulli's defaults are also stupid. I took ArkOS and JELOS for granted.

>>11497570
Just switch themes and optionally dig up the libretro URLs from ArkOS for content updater/downloader to work again.
>>
>>11497730
I've heard Retroid or even Anbernic might exchange handhelds with dead pixels. But TrimUI might be tricky.
>>
>>11497714
Stuck or dead? I'm sure you can run one of those videos that unstuck stuck pixels, though you may need one that specifically runs at the resolution and frame rate of your device's screen.
>>
>>11497742
Looks like it is stuck in green.
It's not dead.
>>
>>11497735
>doesn't let me set aspect ratio on custom, probably because of the core overrides
correct, muOS and probably most custom firmwares have core overrides for every single included core because they wanted to provide a basic out-of-the-box experience. when you change the resolution or aspect ratio or whatever else, you have to then go into the quick menu and hit "core overrides > save core overrides". if you just want globally applied settings for all cores you can go into each core and hit "remove core override" and then when you change the aspect ratio/resolution stuff it'll apply it to everything.
not to shit on you but its just a combination of user inexperience, retroarch being inherently fucky and confusing, and custom firmwares wanting to do more than just be a blank slate by offering some preconfigured settings out of box.
>>
>>11497747
>when you change the resolution or aspect ratio or whatever else, you have to then go into the quick menu and hit "core overrides > save core overrides".
You misunderstand, it reverts in real-time when you pick custom, it's a pain in the ass.
>>
>>11497751
you're saying when you switch it to something other than custom, it immediately switches back before you even leave that menu?

I'll never understand the idiots that gush over them. They look good in photos and they have that wow-factor when you first unbox them, but the novelty wears off quick when you realize that a slight drop results in a part of the device instantly being chipped with no easy repairs or way to hide it. Companies should really offer full plastic versions of devices at a discounted price for those that don't want to deal with all the bullshit. Russ complaining about "muh glossy plastic" doesn't matter much comparing to having a more durable device in the long term, or having a more easily repairable device at that.

the only warranty that works is the one from retailers (read: Amazon). The way it works is that you initially pay 1.5 times what you should, and if you happen to be part of the 1% that will file a refund and actually take it to court if they give you the runaround,
they'll just send you a new one funded by the remaining 99%.
I spent half as much time trying to get some old phones/laptops fixed on warranty as I spent actually using them. Had a poco x2 way back with a faulty battery connector that stopped displayed an accurate battery reading and would be prone to just shutting off under load. It went through 3 service trips under warranty without the issue ever being fixed right up until they straight up stopped accepting that brick's serial number in their website. Phone support just told me to dial an infinite loop of different numbers.
If big name chink manufacturers do this shit all the time I don't expect a small one to give me the time of day.

In fairness, Russ is using Kawase Glow in that video, and that one is super aggressive with no built-in way to tame it down. I've been trying to wrangle it using image-adjustment for my CRT shader stack, and it's pretty tough trying to balance between toning down the harshness on bright highlights without causing the rest of the image to become too dark and crushing the blacks. I shamefully spent a few months on reddit solely for the Game Boy community, because traditional forums for console modding are dead. The amount of people mass importing Game Boy consoles from Japan and butchering them with ham handed, shit quality mods for upvotes and breaking/trashing the OEM components is genuinely depressing as fuck. Nothing like seeing cunts buying lots of pristine consoles and slapping the cheapest possible IPS panels in them with a shitty shell and demanding praise for their "Hard work". Hell, the only reason I used Reddit was because I was tired of seeing the same thing on Youtube. For every one or two people with good modding videos you had the videos from would-be influencers breaking stuff in the process of "improving" it.

I'm not the guy you're replying to, but the original anon who went of on the muOS rant last night.
The overrides not saving properly and resetting between games is exactly what caused me the most trouble with this OS.
The save file management the other anon mentioned, and how it puts each save in its own subfolder also means I can't easily sync all my saves with my other devices.
I talked to some of the devs on their discord about these issues, and they essentially told me they weren't planning to change anything.

Seems like a decent OS otherwise though.

Can any anons point me in the direction of a some what decent pocketable handheld with some quality buttons? I really don't wanna get an Ayaneo Pocket DMG but it's starting to look more and more like the only viable option. It costs almost as much as a refurbished Steam Deck though.

>>
>>11500030
>I actually can't think of a genuine reason anyone would watch this fella over others.
Because he's unbiased and uses his own money on the handhelds.
And he's right about Switch/PS2/GC Performance.
The performance between a RG35XX and a RP5 is better but RP5 to say something like an Odin is pretty much neglible. Besides if you are going to spend $300 on an android handheld you may aswell just get the Steam Deck. Adding more power is not going to help much when the software for PS2/Switch emulation is basically real barebones, AetherSX2 is fucking dead and Switch Android is still being worked on.

Other anon here. Yeah, they're incredibly pigheaded, and at times flippant, about the things they do differently and it's a total pain, part of the reason I never reached out to them. A shame the only other options are Knulli with very lengthy boot times once you load games and very slow development, and Rocknix RC which I'm told is locked out of the proprietary GPU driver which performs best so it sorta rules out 3D. Might end up moving to it anyway and ports be damned, as PS1 rendering is software mode reliant for some reason.

I think I may be at or at least very near the end of this little CRT experiment. Boy I hope so, I'd like to stop tinkering and just play some fucking games already. Anyway, beyond a simple interpolation filter for reference, I started with the shader stack in column 2. I thought it looked pretty cool, for a slapped-together solution that can still run well on cheap chinkhelds. But transparency effects and dithering don't quite land properly, and of course Kawase Glow is a hambeast that blows out bright scenes, though it doesn't look too bad in these Genesis games. Column 3 was my initial attempt to reel in the glow; I used brighter games to test with, but coming back to this set of games showed how the attempt to dim Kawase also cost other games too much vibrancy. Which brings us to column 4, where I finally learned the right order for my shaders to bring convergence into the fold to improve pixel blending effects (yes it's blurrier, so were most of our old shitty television sets we got from Radio Shack and Crazy Gideon's, you'll get over it) and tightened up the picture to improve brightness in games like these, without completely blowing out bright games again (only mostly blown out now)
>>
>>11500707
Well it's not like I haven't done any googling when choosing MM+ over Brick or 35XX. It's just that I know for a fact, as an IT guy, that community around software (OnionOS in this case) matters A LOT. It means more community support, more emulators and software emerging, and overall tighter experience.

Brick is powerful and can emulate PSP (poorly, it seems) and N64, sure. Does Brick have sticks thoughever? No. So how can I play Banjoo-Kazooie without sticks, or any PSP game that requires sticks?

35XX+ - idk. What does it even have, except Bluetooth, to tower over MM+? I'm not defending MM+, I just see all these chinkhelds as diminishing returns. You cannot, really buy anything better than this, for 50$. So I prefer better software over stronger hardware. Maybe I'm misinformed. Would love to read another opinion.

Here's the brighter stuff for comparison. Full bloom left, first brightness correction attempt middle, new brightness and convergence right. You can see how the right is definitely brighter than the middle, but manages to do it without losing any detail in comparison. Better colours too, I think.

NetherSX2 sort of picks up where they left off. Even though PS2 emulation is hard we got it pretty good with what we have. My pixel 8a phone can run PS2 games flawlessly. Touch only controls are shit and I don't like using my phone for gaming because it destroys the battery with enough time. This Pixel phone does seem to hold a charge a lot better than the old Samsung Galaxy 2 or even 5 but I dread having a phone with another destroyed battery. Everything's fine at first but after about 6 months to a year you're not walking far from an outlet for charging. It's okay if you're close to an outlet. Phones are for calling and texting. Yes despite being a boomer I know how to close out apps by bringing up all the windows at once. The battery's life expectancy just craters. I think this is why not many AAA experiences are popular on handheld phones and tablets. Capcom has proven that given the abysmal sales of RE games on the iPhone and iPad. Essentially perfect ports but with almost no one buying them.

I've bought a decent amount of stuff on the 'zon and 'li.
All prepackaged SD cards are trash. All prepackaged cables are trash unless its an extremely premium product (so probably not from 'li). A pack of PNY 64 giggy cards is like 20 bucks and a handful of braided USB C cables is similarly cheap. I also recommend a USB charger with multiple outputs, maybe the Anker one or something but thats just a general useful thing to have at your setup.

This looks great, anon! CRT shaders with glow/bloom/halation on handhelds are so comfortable and fun to use, and yours is looking great so far. I hope at some point you can be truy satisfied with it and play more, I also tinkered more than I'd like until I found my current setup, but trust me, once you're happy enough with it and finally consider it "finished"... and then play some video games? I got an RP5 for PlayStation 2 and I'm getting random slowdowns in Summoner. Runs beautifully 75% of the time then even during what I wouldn't think were intense situations it chugs. Almost no difference between 0.5x to 2x resolution. Is it just because it's a poorly optimized early PS2 game or was I tricked and should have splashed out for an Odin 2?

Unfortunately it's not a very popular game so I couldn't find much about performance tweaks for it.

OpenGL. Doesn't Vulkan required a compatible desktop GPU?

I also switched to Software for a bit and while it still dipped, it was only going down to mid-40s rather than high 20s.

>>11501821
Playable? Yes. Fully enjoyable? Not quite. I love my RG28XX, but the shoulder buttons hurt and you can really feel the lack of stick if you're doing 3D stuff. I was constantly thinking how much nicer Spyro would feel if I had a stick rather than micro-taping the D-Pad for fine course adjusting in Flight/Speedways, or those nightmarish minigames like sliding or Bently's Wack-a-Mole requiring you to precisely bonk the moles and not the Wizard-cats(?).

>>11501698
Can't blame you for thinking that, the reviewers and even a bunch of posters here keep parroting that RP5 is good for Ps2.
You can play around with drivers and either the stock Aethersx2 or either of the nether builds, there can be a lot of gains found there for the games with random issues.

I found about about 5 ps2 games on the RP5 with a few issues, graphical or not running at speed and then when switching to my Odin 2 the problems disappear.

People bang on about hardware or software, but the simple truth is you have to go with a more expensive device for a worthwhile experience of the library.

Yeah the trackball and paddle ("dial" or "knob" for you zoomers) is cool as fuck. Even the numpad is cool, although I'm not sure what I'd use it for. It would be great for weapon hotkeys in Doom, probably a bunch of stuff for other older PC games and even VNs. And I always LOVE a good disc d-pad not that I actually expect it to be a good one, but anything is possible. I think they killed it on the control side and made it really interesting, it's basically everything else like price, chip and OS options, audio and screen quality, etc that I'm more skeptical about.

Why do people like you feel a need to post when you clearly haven't followed anything happening with Android in the past 5 years? It was in 2020 or 2021 when they did a major rewrite of input handling in Android exactly to eliminate latency. You can test this easily with emulating GB and setting up runahead. With a wired controller, there will be zero latency. Stop repeating shit from the 2010s.

It is, as you can see the post hasn't been deleted, it's just looked down on by many, but that's fine, talk about it and people that are also interested will reply, and if someone complains, just ignore or talk to them about it, it's not a big deal really, anon.

>>11503696
In general smartphone posts make up few of the 500+ posts this general gets every time, it's not a big deal. Of course we could make a new thread, or a thread on /g/, but a new thread here would probably be very slow, and while /g/ is technology, lots of people there would probably talk about using these controllers for modern smartphone titles, and not emulation. A lot of people like both dedicated handhelds, and accessories/controllers like these, I don't see the harm in having it all on the same thread.

>>11504982
Not all of us, I play lots on my Galaxy Tab A8, a budget tablet from 2021 that I got used for cheap, it was a struggle to make it run PS1 with shaders, but it's working now, though anything more demanding than PS1 more often than not doesn't work, or runs poorly. I don't mind it though, as long as I can run NES, Master System, GB, GBC, Game Gear, SNES, Genesis, GBA and PS1, I'll be just fine, and this tablet runs them well even with shaders. Also, thank God IPEGA makes symmetrical controllers still, it's nice.

They dropped support because they didn’t make the controller in the first place. They just put their branding on it. The Kishi v1 is a rebranded gamevice

Flawless my ass. SS2 heavily uses Start and/or Select and they are almost unusable on the DSi, unlike X/Y which should be doing the same thing in an ergonomical (read: remapped) layout.
But no, GBARunner3 can't remap buttons in principle. There are exactly 0 (zero) lines of code for that, I even checked.

I'd argue Anbernic was the biggest contributor to retro handhelds becoming mainstream the past five years, love them or hate them. Miyoo just released one popular handheld among many other popular handhelds.

Around the time of the Anbernic RG351 series and the Odroid Go Advance is when things really picked up in my opinion. The less popular TrimUI model S/Powkiddy A66 and Powkiddy V90 along with a dozen others released around that time, too. Before then it was really just things like the RS97, GCW Zero, and RPi zero cases.
>>
>>11507359
I should probably have mentioned this was basically RK3326 (RG351, GO Advance) which had a GPU, FOSS support and linux blobs vs. very weak and old e-waste ARM chips without GPUs (everything else).

It's a Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 from 2021, you can still buy it new I think, though you can get it used for a lot cheaper, it's current successor is the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 Plus, which is a little larger, 11' screen, while this has a 10.5' screen, which to me is just a perfect size. It's not powerful, I'd go for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6, S7, S8 or S9 if you want something this size that runs better, but as I've mentioned I can emulate up to PS1 with shaders just fine... anything more demanding though? It's hit or miss I guess.

Also, this isn't a huge tablet, like those 13' or 14' ones, but it's not that small either, not all telescopic controllers will fit out of the box, most won't in fact, I'm using an IPEGA PG9083 for this reason, it just fits and works, I love this thing, and it was cheap too.
