Why is this game held to such a high praise when its pretty terrible itself? nostalgia?
>>
>>11501396
In my childhood, Golden Axe was present in many an arcade and pizza parlor for many years, as well as being ported to Genesis.

Quintessential fantasy brawler developed by Sega, inspired by 80's action-fantasy flicks, mainly Conan the Barbarian. What's not to like? :)
>>
it's fun

Why is it terrible? You play as a medieval warrior and kill shit. The magic is cool, the controls work fine. It's like 40 minutes long, nice challenge for the first few runs. Not enough gay exposition and crying anime girls for you?
>>
>>11501396
>Why is this game held to such a high praise when its pretty terrible itself?
First off, I don't think it is held to particularly high praise, in terms of arcade beat em ups, especially compared to CPS1/2 or Konami stuff. Even on Sega's own home console people put the Streets of Rage trilogy, Hyperstone Heist and Final Fight CD above it.
>nostalgia?
Probably a part of it. While it was quickly eclipsed, it was an early 89 arcade title and a Christmas 89 home release, for what was available at the time, it was good. The home release especially since you were almost 2 years away from the first Streets of Rage game or even the crappy home port of Final Fight on the SNES. For an early Genesis owner, not only is it a solid game but the best home beat em up at the time. It would have truly felt like having the arcade at home.

>Why is this game held to such a high praise when its pretty terrible itself? nostalgia?
It doesn't outstay its welcome that's why. A problem with a lot of Beat 'em ups is that they are extremely repetitive with waves of the same enemies. Golden Axe doesn't do that.

What is the best port/emulator to try all 3 games? MAME?

why do they all have the same face?
>>
>>11501396
Maybe because of the music, cool character designs, ability to play as a dwarf, the camping stages with the little guys who steal your shit fighting on top of a giant eagle, riding those little dinosaur things, cool magic attacks that fill the screen, being in arcades at a time when people were interested in arcades.

Because the artstyle is realistic and you have face blindness from your autism.

The series greatness is in its aestetics. Mechanicly the first is the worst.
>>
>>11501806
it feels kind of stilted, most of the game revolves around you spamming the dash attack over and over because it's so fast and covers so much distance, and that's what the enemies are also constantly doing.
>>
I don't get it either. I played it in 2024 for the first time, and enjoyed it enough to beat it, but it was also the first beat em up I really sunk time into. Playing Streets of Rage afterwards made me realize that Golden Axe is really stiff and frustrating. It's a very rigid experience where you have to play by the game's rules, but those rules involve what feels like using cheap cheese strategies. And if you don't follow those rules you wind up in very frustrating situations getting spitroasted by 2 mobs on either side of you, vs Streets of Rage where the rules make more sense and feel less like you're spamming cheap tactics to win, and outside of some of the bosses you don't really get into situations where getting your ass kicked is frustrating (disclaimer because /vr/ lacks reading comprehension: you'll still get your ass kicked, but for some reason it's just not as unfun as getting your ass beat in Golden Axe.) It also doesn't help that your attacks feel a little weak because even the weakest enemies require 2 or more combos to defeat.
Not to say it's bad, because again, I enjoyed it enough to beat it. Going back to it is hard though. It requires way more memorization than something like Streets and is far more punishing for small mistakes.

the arcade, 2 and 3 were good. 1 was shit but a decent try
>>
>>11501396
It's a quarter-muncher of the worst kind, but it was impressive for 1989. Home console games tended to be stuff like Simon's Quest that was even more frustrating to play.
>>
>>11501396
Just played Golden Axe 3. I think that graphically this is probably one of the weakest beatemups, but the thing about it is the fact that it is adventure. It is a journey through fantasy lands, like The Hobbit, you have a mission to kick some golden ass, you see strange new creatures, you walk through the ancient cemeteries, villages, castles, you ride a fucking giant eagle. It's a journey.

>Just played Golden Axe 3. I think that graphically this is probably one of the weakest beatemups
The Golden Axe sequels always got the short end of the stick cartridge wise. The original Golden Axe was 4 megabits, the sequel Golden Axe 2, also 4 megabits and Golden Axe 3, a whole 8 megabits. Compare to Streets of Rage, the first one was 4 megabits, the second was 16 megabits and the third 24 megabits.
It's no wonder The Revenge of Death Adder looks so much better than the console sequels, it's not just that it was on better hardware, its also that they had to work on small cartridges.

Reminder that in Golden Axe II, you can see Tyris's pixelated ass if you pause on the right frame during her special.
>>
>>11501939
Now that I think about it I'm surprised they didn't replace the kanji logo with something else for the western releases
In the end it wasn't a problem anyway as most American kids didn't even notice it was Japanese and thought it was just some cool barbarian looking logo or some shit

Or let the minotaur grab and throw you. Actual ass, no thong. Sega was surprisingly lax when it came to a bit of nudity and panty shots, at least before Sega of America got involved.

How?
>>
>>11505092
what are some other sega games with nudity/panty
>>
>>11505108
Off the top of my head (for the Sega Genesis):

Golden Axe II - already mentioned
Alex Kidd (Japanese version) - humorous nudity when you win/lose the RPS minigame
Kujaku Ou 2 - nude girl in the ending
Streets of Rage series (Japanese versions) - panty shots
The Revenge of Shinobi - not nudity, but when you kill the pink female enemy, her top is about to fall off and she covers herself
Sailor Moon - panty shots (or leotards, whatever)
Rings of Power - secret intro nudity
a couple bootleg games with nudity
>>
>>11501396
It looks decent, plays well, is short and easy to master. Probably more satisfying than it should be.
>>
I have never played 2/3/RoDA nevermind the other failed reboots. Only ever 1.
>>
golden axe 1 is worth playing the arcade version cuz its relatively doable to 1CC with some effort and luck

the genesis port has added content that actually makes the game worse. the extra skeletons and death adders are annoying
>>
I love how in the PC Engine port you can tell the cutscenes were made for the Tyris Flare storyline and then slightly edited for the other two characters. Pretty amusing to see Gilius Thunderhead with a feminine figure.

>>
What I never see anyone mention is how "bendy" the level structure is... you can use the environment to put yourself into 1v1 fights that are super easy and quick to win with basic combo attacks, 'cuz the enemy pathfinding is kinda retarded. That way you don't have to always be spamming jump attack or dash attack.

Also, you can trick enemy AI into walking off cliffs or knock them off cliffs.

The game is a LOT more fun when you stop being a victim of the AI and learn how to abuse the AI.
>>
>>11509354
Close but Ax and Gilius are identical except for Ax also being played by dads, and people who understand frame data are also known as trannies aka tyris players.
>>
>>11509427
Revenge of Death Adder is a beat em up. You're thinking of The Duel which is indeed not a beat em up.
