This is a fan made screenshot. Nobody knows what “pocket monsters rpg” was going to actually be like.

Even still, this is what everyone wanted Pokémon on N64 to be and we were all disappointed with Stadium. Nintendo knew it too which is why they were graceful enough to sell us an add-on for the controller to we could play the gameboy games on our tv.

>this is what everyone wanted Pokémon on N64 to be and we were all disappointed with Stadium
Stadium is still beloved to this day and I've never seen anyone complain about it not being a full-blown RPG until this board. The Stadium games basically complete each gen, and they take advantage of some of the best parts of the N64 which is 4-player multiplayer.
>>
>>11503862
I didn’t expect an action game and I can’t recall my friends expecting that either but I’m sure some did. Most of us were expecting the N64 Pokémon game to be a full-fat epic RPG like the gameboy games and we got a fucking battle simulator. Still had my fun with it but yeah they were both letdowns.

>especially on a console that was so starved of true RPGs

Nintendo makes some good games, but their apologists who act like they can do no wrong are pathetic.

>>11503915
>it would have flopped

They put the pokemon skin on puzzle game shovelware and it sold gangbusters. Anything pokemon branded would have sold well during pokemania.
>>
>>11503839

>>
>>11503915
>empty and lifeless
So like modern Pokemon games which still sell like hotcakes?
>>
>>11503928
Nobody said that nobody would've wanted one. I'm saying people didn't really complain about getting Stadium during fucking Pokemania. Chances are you already had the Game Boy games anyway, and Stadium perfectly complements that. Everything Stadium offered was a god send for anyone with the games, especially if you had siblings or friends who, chances are, were also into Pokemon at the time.

We got two 3D Pokemon RPGs next gen and they were mediocre. One on N64 would probably have been far too ambitious.
>>
>>11503934
>We got two 3D Pokemon RPGs next gen and they were mediocre.

To be fair, that was true of all of nintendos sixth gen entries for their franchises when they knocked it out of the park during fifth gen.
>>
I mean, this faggot is right... I used to love Pokémon Stadium back in 2000. We had the cartoon, the movie and the games on game boy, Pokémon Stadium let nigglets have badass 'mon fights in full 3D and if you and/or your friends were some brokeass niggles you could have some fun playing those minigames a la Mario Party.
You had the stadium, battle vs. cpu or 2nd player, the gb tower if you had the gb game plus the xfer pak, that nerdy quiz for nintendrones, you can transfer some pkmn from your gb cartridge to your stadium cartridges at the pokemon lab, fuck you can even teach a pikachu how to surf if you beat the game with your own instead of shitty rentals.
The game was pure sovl, you had to be there, it expanded and enhanced your pokémon experience. You missed it if you were a saturn fag coping with that shitty sega touring car championshit port or you were too old being a psx gen x faggot playing movies like final fantasy vii or metal gear. Pokémon Stadium and Stadium 2 were peak Gen I & II.
---
With that being said... Let's imagine this scenario, faggots: Pokémon Yellow but on Nintendo 64, how about that? 3D graphics between Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, is Kanto and the same shit as Yellow, you play as Ash and all of that but you can exchange with gb using the xfer pak and even have duels with friends if they had the game, same 3D models and UI as Stadium. That shit could be crazy back in the day, even nowdays as a romhack/homebrew game, that could be lit as fuck.
tl;dr
Pokémon Stadium is peak gen I & II. A Pokémon 3D on 64 based on Yellow would be great.

You guys are being goofy. Maybe your circle of friends was disappointed, but it was generally liked. Kids ate up anything associated with Pokemon back then, nobody was complaining that much.

For what it's worth, you can see user reviews on GameFAQs from when it released still:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/n64/198312-pokemon-stadium/reviews
Mostly positive, with a couple negative reviews. If you can find any evidence that people were widely disappointed, show it. It's true that many thought a full 3D Pokemon RPG would be cool since the start, but that didn't translate into hating on Stadium. Generally people accepted it for what it was.

Correct, never denied that.

Never was a widespread thing, because nobody expected Stadium to be a full RPG like that.

If you were following game news closely, you'd know that the Pokemon Stadium we got in English was actually the second Pokemon Stadium game. So for people knew what to expect. It's possible some ignorant kids you knew misinterpreted previews and expected more. Not sure why they would though, considering magazines made it clear what the game would be. But even if they did expect more, odds are they played Stadium and enjoyed it for what it was when it released.

Dont let the retards change history for you. People love Stadium even back then. I dont know why they're addicted historical revisionism.
>>
>>11507581
I don't get it either. Like I'm not denying kids would've loved a fully 3D Pokemon RPG on N64. But trying to rewrite history to pretend Stadium was some big disappointment related to that is silly.

If I wanted to be charitable, I'd say they're just too young to remember, or maybe their personal friend group was disappointed. But considering the posts calling people "tendies," it's more likely just revisionism for the sake of it.

Theoretically, if there was any disappointment over Stadium not being a full-blown RPG, it would've been at the same moment they found out the game existed. Because early previews made it clear what you were getting. But in reality the reaction to Stadium was overwhelmingly positive. People loved battling in 3D and all the extra modes/rewards for the Game Boy games.
>>
>>11507578
>Never was a widespread thing, because nobody expected Stadium to be a full RPG like that.
this is such an autistic interpretation of events.
>people couldn't have been disappointed by the lack of RPGs on the system because they knew ahead of time that the RPG series that was coming to the console was being demoted to a collection of mini games
Pokemon Stadium was symbolic of Nintendo's failure to deliver the same kind of experiences that their competitors were when it came to the RPG genre. everyone felt that way. when ever the subject of RPGs came up in the magazines it was "Nintendo's RPG starved console". Stadium was a disappointment on that level. I'm not saying that it didn't succeed in what it was trying to be. I'm saying that most people were disappointed that it didn't even attempt to be something of an answer to the like 5 million RPGs on the Playstation, hell, not to mention the SNES. Nintendo fans were expecting that genre to be represented and it simply wasn't. Stadium was symbolic of that
>>
>>11507594
Yeah. I was there since red and blue came out. No one thought or mentioned some full blown 3D pokemon game campaign/world. I could probably get Ocarina of Time inspiring some kids to think it was possible but kids thought ANYTHING was possible back then and then quickly forgot about it the moment Pokemon Pinball or Puzzle League Challenge or the TCG gameboy game came out. And if you were an adult thinking that was possible, and pissed at the devs for not doing the impossible back then, and still pissed about it? Delusional.

The game was advertised as Stadium from the get go. It's hard to find any trending belief or hope or disappointment regarding anything except what was advertised. Sounds like someone in this thread married themselves to an idea long ago and autistically rants to themselves and others about the "biggest mistake ever made".
>>
>>11507638
>Pokemon Stadium was symbolic of Nintendo's failure
To who? You?
> everyone felt that way
Everyone felt N64 lacked RPGs, nobody felt that way about Stadium

So yeah, Stadium didn't solve N64's RPG problem. But nobody was upset at Stadium for not fixing or attempting to fix that. I don't even think calling it a "symbol of the lack of RPGs" makes sense.

Like I wouldn't even call it comparable to calling Sonic R a symbol of the lack of Sonic games on Saturn makes more sense. People expected a new Sonic on Saturn, they didn't expect a full Pokemon RPG on consoles. It was Pocket Monsters after all.
>>
>>11507638
>Nintendo fans were expecting that genre to be represented and it simply wasn't.
This part I agree with you 100% though. Especially after the SNES was so great for RPGs.
>>
>>11505169
This. Everyone just wants Pokémon red blue or whatever on the 64 w full 3d graphics. It’s only long after that people aren’t acting like it wasn’t a huge deal and massive dissapointment.
>>
>>11507645
Maybe I was a bit harsh there. I can understand someone calling Stadium symbolic of the lack of RPGs in a sense. Like if people were talking about what RPGs were available on the N64, they might bring up Stadium just because there's so little else to talk about in that regard.
>>
>>11507645
>>11507643
look guys, i remember when Stadium came out. no one was satisfied with the lack of a campaign, which considering "full blown 3D" RPGs were the norm by that point, wouldn't have been asking too much. the overwhelming response i remember was "it's okay for what it is". everyone was disappointed that Playstation got 20 Final Fantasies and the N64 couldn't even get one decent RPG, even when basically their flagship RPG series was making it's debut on the console
>>
>>11507679
>everyone was disappointed that Playstation got 20 Final Fantasies and the N64 couldn't even get one decent RPG
Yeah that part is definitely true.
>no one was satisfied with the lack of a campaign
I just don't think it was ever a widespread complaint, most people were satisfied with the game or at least said "it's okay for what it is" like you said.

No denying people were heavily disappointed by lack of RPGs, so yeah I wouldn't be surprised if some people were saying things like "the most we got is Pokemon Stadium, no actual RPGs." N64 needed more than Quest 64. Shame Earthbound 64 didn't come out at least.
>>
>>11507694
Honestly I'm just being nitpicky at this point, I understand what >>11507679 is getting at.
>>
>>11506896
The gaslighting comment is in response to no one complained that we never got a full 3D pokemon RPG during the height of pokemania. Acting like it never happened is gaslighting.

(You) posted review scores of stadium which has nothing at all to do with my comment.
>>
>>11507694
think of it this way, people would love a brand new MGS game. one actually made by Kojima. forget this remake they're doing right now. imagine if they were putting out an RTS or something set in the MGS universe. no matter how good it is, a very high percentage of fans are going to groan about not getting a proper sequel to the franchise. that's just how it is, and that's how it was with Stadium. there were no RPGs on the console and no matter what Stadium was, it just wasn't the thing that people wanted it to be. i'm sure there were plenty of kids that were content with seeing 3D pikachu on their screens but there was a high percentage of N64 owners that were disappointed that it didn't deliver something closer to what the gameboy entries were.
>>
>>11507679
That's fine. And it's clear some people remember otherwise. The N64 lacking rpgs was a problem and was known back then but the Stadium part sounds legitimately anecdotal. I remember way too many kids loving just seeing their pokemon in 3D and no one complaining about a campaign. And with reviews silent on the lack of a campaign there's really little else to say.

We all had our social circles and anecdotal experiences back then. Hard to argue what the consensus was, especially when pokemania meant people were happy to consume anything at the time most of the time. I won't deny someone would want a full campaign, it just doesn't reflect anything I've seen since the game's release.
>>
>>11507725
His post did say
>complain about it not being a full-blown RPG
>about it not being
So I agree some people complained about not getting full 3D Pokemon RPG, people always talked about how they wanted that. But generally people weren't complaining about Stadium for it not being that RPG

Anyway, sorry for including your post in that mass reply anon, it was late and I didn't select them carefully. I didn't need to reply to your post.
