what are the "best" console ports of CRPGs and/or CRPG-style console games?

Are there any exceptional ones that aren't just massive downgrades across the board and actually punch above their weight?

Clicked this thread to post this. Also the Ultima 3 NES "port".
Not sure if it was a "I only have a few games so I have to like them" thing but I really enjoyed the NES versions as a kid.
>>
Might & Magic on NES is the best there is even if you count the Locust Plague bug which can be fixed with a patch

Dragon Wars NES is also really good but the translation is unfinished

I love Bard Tales NES as well but it is a simplified version. The sequel is bland though

The best console port of an Ultima game is the SMS version of Ultima 4.

In every other way it's superior.

Seeing this for the first time. Did Richard Garriot intend a spiritual aspect to the Ultima games I was never made aware of? Feel like maybe I should ask this on /x/, but they're an eclectic (a.k.a. Schizo) bunch.

Granted, I only played Ultima 8 and 9 like 25 years ago. 8 felt very janky and 9 was very broken as I recall. Never finished them. I'm well aware they were probably the worst games in the whole series. So since this thread is here...

Also open to suggestion on any game, version, or platform!

Richard Garriott is a fraud. The best concepts and spiritual elements behind the series are actually the intellectual work of Roe R. Adams III.

Awesome link anon, thank you!

Never read or heard of Mr. Adams until today, I would've really been interested in his autobiography or anything he would've written about his career, beliefs, pursuits etc.. I guess he hasn't gotten around to that. Kinda bummed. lol.

I may have to go check out some of these games he's worked on.

You can get Ultima IV for free from GOG, then download the XU4 source port and the Graphics Upgrade Patch to improve the game.

That explains so much. I’ve always found Garriott’s career weird because of that mix of brillance and retardation, but I never actually thought of questioning the myth.

>XU4
Funny, I was just perusing Ultima Codex and was looking at some of the source ports, lol :)

I'll have to check that one out!

>That explains so much
Same here! I didn't realize he took so much credit so liberally when there were many other contributors who made Ultima possible.

Maybe that explains why his several attempts to create another series, let alone any other game, have failed miserably in comparison. He's probably a real twat to work with.

I mean, aside from "Shroud of the Avatar" and "Tabula Rasa" I haven't heard anything of note. And both of those flew under my radar.
>>

given the litany of spelling and grammar issues in the first ultima games it's really unsurprising that "LORD BRITISH" would be a fucking tommy tallarico type character

I hope somebody shits in his mailbox

>Sidenote...

" In January 2021, Garriott was elected president of The Explorers Club.

In February 2021, Garriott traveled to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench on the planet. While there, as well as performing scientific duties, he placed a geocache and recorded another short sci-fi film. This made him the holder of both altitude and depth records for these activities. "

Rumor has it when James Cameron discussed his planned documentaries of the Mariana Trench at a party, he jokingly mentioned putting a geocache down there for the next explorer to find, to his guests laughter.

That is save for an unamused Mr. Garriot, who threw his drink across the room and screamed,

>" Save something for the rest of us, you FUCKING ASSHOLE!! "

And stormed out.

I have only played Dragon Quest III, V and the first Shin Megami Tensei.

Is playing Wizardry and Ultima really obtuse and difficult or is it a fairly normal game to get into? Would someone give me a quick rundown on Ultima general gameplay? From what I understand, Wizardry is a first person dungeon crawler, right? So make a map and keep track of the dungeon and explore until you find the objectives? What about Ultima, is it like a harder and more complex Dragon Quest game? Any tips to help an ignorant non gamer to get into these overwhelming RPGs
>>
>>11506828
Wizardry is very basic, you need graph paper. Ultima is much more fleshed out.
>>
>>11506828
>Ultima
For IV and V, it helps to take notes. People will tell you to talk to so and so about X when you are in the town of Y and it can be hard to keep track of.
Great games. U5 is probably my favorite game I ever played.
>>
>>11506828
I found Ultima too storyfaggy/graphic and the interface didn't help. Wizardry is fun, unforgiving and random but also more entertaining than typical jrpgs imo.
Try the SNES version which has some amenities, or the PC remake for even more amenities.

Richard garriott hasn’t been relevant to vidya for decades now and is a huge douche. Hopefully he stays away

>What about Ultima, is it like a harder and more complex Dragon Quest game?
You're gonna need both the manual and a walkthrough for pretty much any ultima game
In my opinion only Ultima Underworld still holds up
>>
>>11506828
Wizardy still holds up to this year, it's pretty easy to pick up too and it's relatively a short game the only "problem" is that there isn't much story if you are a storyfag as it's 100% combat and dungeon crawling, the town is literally a menu. But if you enjoy jrpgs for the gameplay then you will like Wizardry.

Ultima instead has your average top down view with actual towns and overworld but God the way battles work suck hard compared to Wizardry or any other turn based game

Manual, yes. Walkthrough is mostly unnecessary. U5 dos have some fucked up shit you have to do in the underworld though. A walkthrough is probably necessary for that.
