Post and discuss anything related to NES or Famicom.
What are we playing tonight?
>>11505414A better console.
>>11505445I'm a Saturn lover too, favourite system of 5th gen, but not really comparable to NES. Although I know you're just being edgy.
I have never beaten Solstice
>>11505445As a SEGA fan... what exactly is the point of this post? Sure, Saturn's cool, but this is a thread to talk about how the NES/Famicom is cool, you can like more than one thing, anon.>>11505414Terminator 2: Judgement Day. I keep getting filtered by the last level, but I know I can beat this bastard soon enough.
>>11505797There's a few posters on /vr who've been having a prolonged anti-Nintendo meltdown.
>>11505390more like comfy fascism thread
>>11506201Under fascism, everyone will get a comfy bed.
>>11506201>>11506205>no state mandated top loading famicom
If Circus Charlie had a proper ending it would’ve been one of the goats
>>11505390Mostly just Tengen Tetris and Adventure Island on my eggheld
>>11507526Is that a Pokémon/Pocket Pikachu step counter?
I only have a PAL NES that I picked up nearly 20 years ago for £10. Since Nintendo were pricks when they designed the thing and I can't 60Hz mod it should I get an AV Famicom or install composite out to an OG one?
>>11507553The only reeason to get an OG famicom is if you care about the port in the front of the console (to play 3 players Twinbee etc) and the few games that support the mic. It's pretty minor reallybut if you do get one there is an alternative to modding it yourself: Hong Kong Famicoms were modded by default (
>>11507553Get an AV Famicom off Mercari or Yahoo Auctions using a proxy service, it will be cheaper than on eBay. Buy a few other things because adding another console or some games barely raises the shipping at makes it more worth it. Maybe get a PC Engine while your at it?
>>11507607Funny you suggest that since the PC Engine is one of the few major systems I don't have even after all these years and I was wanting to pick one of those up too. Importing both at once is a good shout.
>>11505390my hudson controller doesn't work with SMB2 USA for some reason. is this a known issue?
>>11507629Definitely, make sure you look around for the cheapest before buying, should only cost you $120 USD or less for a working Top Loader Famicom and CoreGrafx on Mercari.
>>11507814(120usd total for both of 60 each)
>>11507806I think the support for the expansion controller has to programmed for every game. For some reason SMB2 doesn't have that. You'll find a lot of western games won't work with it.
>>11507837Don't expansion controller automatically serve as a second 1st player controller by default if nothing is programmed specifically?
>>11507856The AV Famicom has the expansion port on the side, idk what anon is on about.
Why do people get so defensive about the NES library? Whenever you mention games like home alone or beetlejuice are complete unredeemable garbage that nobody should ever play, you always get angry comments and denial.
>>11507856No. By default it does nothing. Most of the time it works as player 1, but not unless they programmed it to work.
>>11507856Nope. For that to be the case, they would have to be on the same data line. See https://www.nesdev.org/wiki/Controller_reading#$4016_/_$4017_ReadThat being said, its very easy to ROM hack in support to games that don't have it since the overwhelming majority of games have all their controller I/O handled by a single subroutine.
>>11505445>comparing 5th gen to 3rd gen
>>11505390What's the best Famiclone to get nowadays that plays NES cartridges? It doesn't have to be anything fancy like the stuff Analogue or other manufacturers make nowadays, I don't want to spend too much either, I just want something reliable.
>>115080092D games vs (some) 2D games It’s a fair comparison
I got this recently. Lava FC. It's an excellent famiclone
>>11509220This looks sleek, transparency's where it's at.
>>11510550It comes in a lot of colors, but the clear and green really did it for me. I'm not good at taking photos, but here's s-video line doubled.
>>11505390Castlevania III is going to make me kill myself if I can't get past this one stage
>>11507985so all you have to do is change which bit is shifted? If anon >>11507837 is using a flashcart I could try to make a hack
I'm thinking about buying an NES or Famicom. I think the Famicom looks much more appealing, and I'm just going to buy an Everdrive rather than start another game collection. Is there any reason I should consider getting an NES instead? Would I need a power adapter or anything to use a Famicom in the US?
>>11512061Nevermind actually, I just learned that the famicom's controllers are hardwired and it only supports RF out. Seems like a huge headache.
>>11506201What are you talking about? Psychopath
>>11512069You can get an AV Famicom
>>11507587I love mine except the fact that the cords are so damn short
>>11512113I think I'm going to. From what I've read they seem to be the most reliable NES/FC model by far and they're kind of cute. Is there anything I should know before I buy one?
>>11512069AV Famicom has, well, AV. You can get that instead. It's strange that the US version of the AV Famicom is RF only.
>>11512113NTA, but that's what I finally bought my self. I should bring it back home to play here. It's a great system. I have two other Famicoms. A regular round button Famicom from Japan. And I also have an extremely rare official Famicom from Taiwan. I'm using its AC adapter with the AV Famicom. Since Taiwan's voltage is so close to the US the WallWart doesn't get any warmer than our own.
>>11512162>Is there anything I should know before I buy one?Don't use a USA NES Power Adapter.
>>11512113>dogboneI wish they'd make USB or bluetooth versions of this... it's a nice controller.
A Monster in my Pocket game? By Konami? With cover art made by the same guy from Castlevania, Contra and Turtles in Time? Count me in.
>>11514731I bought my self a copy of this game for my NES Halloween of 2023. I kept thinking I already owned it but I had Monster Party. So now I have both.
>>11511613You have to edit the bitwise logic of the controller parsing code so that the carry flag that gets ROLed into the output byte is the logical OR of both bit 1 and bit 0 of LDA $4016 (as opposed to just bit 0). Here's the controller parsing code for Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) as an example. The biggest challenge when making a hack like this is fitting the necessary changes into the space allotted. In this instance, I optimize two byes from the original subroutine by replacing LDX #$01 with LDX #$09 which lets me remove LDX #$08. With these two extra bytes, I am able to replace LSR A (which sets the carry flag if bit 0 of $4016 is set) with CLC followed by ADC #$BF (which sets the carry flag if either bit 0 or bit 1 of $4016 is set). $BF is used as the constant for ADC as opposed to $FF because when no inputs are pressed on either controller, $4016 defaults to $40 due to open bus behavior. Finally, the target of BNE at the end of the loop is updated to account for some code shifting around. If you can't squeeze changes into the existing subroutine, you can always hijack it and write a new, longer subroutine elsewhere in ROM.
>>11506201>Famicom fascismI'm liking the sound of this
>>11505445pic unrelated
>>11514731
>>11515973Love the Vampire's walk animation. What a great game.
>>11515719I tested my code on my Everdrive N8 Pro and it did not work. Apparently the Everdrive has inaccuracies with open bus behavior (see https://forums.nesdev.org/viewtopic.php?t=12549) so the code that ORs the bits in only 3 bytes worth of instructions doesn't work. I did another edit (pictured) that is compatible with the Everdrive, but this version doesn't work with the normal controller and instead ONLY works with the expansion port controller. I tested this and it does work.>>11507806The patch only modifies 7 bytes from the base game, so it actually fits into the Everdrive Pro's 8 Game Genie code limit. If you want to play SMB2 (USA) with an expansion port controller, use these Game Genie codes:PAYNYVSXAYYVTOANATAKANPTZKANZVXVANLVNVPNYT
>>11508451Probably retroUSB AVS. It's $200, but you absolutely get your money's worth with it. I sold it when I got a deal on an Analogue Nt, but it's still a great option.https://www.retrousb.com/product/avs/21
>>11516670>AV Famicom>with NES pads>and Everdrive N8You'd be my brother if it wasn't for that Mac screen
