Quake has 6 games one of which you can't buy anymore
Serious Sam has 500

>liminal spaces
Why did this meme start, and why do people always try to force it on older FPS? Most modern FPS (even NuDoom) are basically just hallways connecting arenas, so I never understand why it ever gets attributed to FPS that actually have more continuous enemy item and secret placements paired with things like monster closets or teleportation traps. It always feels so backwards, especially since older games generally wouldn't lock you in as often. Its like they see literal hallways and then immediately disregard how actually open and continuous the flow of combat generally is.

Why isn't Sandy treated better? He's the GOAT game designer. Most RPGs and horror games, electronic games and tabletop games alike owe so much to him. Carmack tech is great but it wasn't that impressive. Like being able to play Doom at its target framerate wasn't a reality for most gamers, when gamers could catch up with the original Doom, Doom 2 was already a thing but at the same time the industry moved towards polygonal graphics. Quake was also impressive but by the time people caught up you had the Unreal BTFO Carmack engine. Worse than Carmack being overrated was John Romero who peaked in episode 1.

The gimmick levels guy?
GermanPete (one of the biggest TF2 and Doom youtubers) has dedicated like 5 videos to that guy dickriding him to no end. Which I personally don't like since I am not a fan of gimmicks. I prefer good level design and balanced combat hoardes/ambushes/etc.

I assume a lot of people share my sentiment

Call of Cthullu ? Which is arguably the basis for most horror games Or to keep /vr/ AOE

Probably because there's never any functionally human spaces in old shooters. Duke nukem was revolutionary when it featured flushable toilets in a bathroom. Doom e1m1 was titled 'hangar'. Why? ConfusedSeinfeld.jpg

Spooky liminal spaces and 'backrooms' with monsters have been exciting imagination since at least the minotaur in the labyrinth at knossos. It doesn't have to be a generational front.

Liminal space is an accurate word. Look up a dictionary

I can get the lack of older games feeling "lived in" when compared to Build games (as that was a big part of their focus a lot of the time) but thats not quite the same thing. Thats more complaining about a lack of direct interactivity, as well as a lack of imagination for what level designs were trying to convey. Downtown in Doom 2 similarly does not look like any city anywhere ever, but that doesn't really have much to do with it having sectors that connect other sectors together.

I'm not arguing against that, I'm arguing how its often used in a connotative sense by younger people when trying to sound smart about game design, or when complaining about not being constantly bombarded by stimuli. It feels like it only ever gets used negatively about older games that ironically handled it better than our current age of walking simulators or unskippable cutscenes and on rails conversations with gameplay thrown in between. I just find it an odd yet frequent complaint.

Apparently it gets used a lot with that creepypasta shit, so thats probably why.

>Why isn't Sandy treated better? He's the GOAT game designer.
His levels for Doom 2 killed immersion and were indulgent at the cost of gameplay

Pick a row, all of the games from the other row disappear forever
>>
>>11509549
Top row is all you need, every game on every other row is just a knockoff of varying quality anyway.

>no Unreal
Bummer, and what’s going on in the bottom there with Disruptor and Psycho Circus?
