Post Japanese developed 2D games with a Medieval Europe/Tolkien based setting.
>>11509256everyone who was into jarpigs here got ran off the board
>>11509283Particularly because every kept screaming "jarpig" every time they tried to talk about them. That's probably part of why /vrpg/ got created to begin with.
>>11510492how's that board nowadays?
>>11510545slow and shit
>>11510563Ironically because they keep having WRPG vs JRPG shitflinging contests.FF1 is basically a module of Basic D&D. Chaos is literally the only original monster in the game; everything else if from D&D almost 1 to 1.
>>11510648JRPG fans are shameless weebs, if they would pay basic respects to the founders of the genre and stop pretending like Japan invented everything worth playing they wouldn't be so reviled. They're also mindfucked by culture war nonsense.
>>11510661That's because the bulk of them are post-FFVII converts who view things like Ar Tonelico and Summon Knight as high art. If any of them played or respected the JRPGs from the 80s, they'd know that the OG designers were huge fans of their Western progenitors. Wizardy didn't survive over there as a dark and difficult dungeon crawler for nothing.
>>11510545exactly like every other /v/ related board that discusses RPGs, but in their own boardI haven't seen any original perspective come out of it; it reads almost exactly like any other old /v/ or /vr/ thread about rpgs
>>11510661>pretending like Japan invented everything>I'm going to make things up because I have no defense for why people are sick of playing a knight going through a castle fighting goblins and stopping an evil wizard from taking over the world for the 200th timeThey should have made more games like Planescape. It's not surprising that they eventually pivot to cute catgirls that you can marry.
>>11510675>western progenitorI'm fairly sure the Maelific you posted is a rip-off from Pazuzu.
The closest thing I have is Wizardry-em-ups, but it's not like there's much lore or visible world to accompany them. I've played 2 BAPGs (Bronze Age Playing Games, 1 awful) and I have played a singular Japanese developed western RPG port that kinda fits until the series develops. Do Avatar-em-ups count if they don't have Bobbits (Japan)?
>>11511564Why do japanese always make rock walls like that? Natural rock walls don't look like someone stacked rocks on top of eachother.
>>11511593In this example they aren't natural rock walls, but probably because they think it looks neat and fits more to the medieval fantasy aesthetic than modern square bricks do.
>>11510545it's /vpol/ but very slow, has a bunch of resident schizos, I pretty much stopped going there as most discussions boil down to "popular game bad" and "everything is woke"
>>11509283How about non-RPG fantasy games though? I can name a bunch:CadashGolden AxeAlundraCadash is so old school it even has pig orcs (porcs?) from the very first edition of D&D, great game though, has an interconnected world akin to metroidvanias
>>11509283>>11511619I originally intended the thread to be 2D games, as in beat em ups, platformers, fighters. Wasn't talking about overhead view but I can understand why you misunderstood me.
>>11510661I swear 100% of posts mentioning "weebs" on /vr/ are made by this one guy.
>>11511785Losing the internet special olympics can at times have profound effect on posters. Sometimes the trauma last years.
>>11511387>>11511785>>11511802Posts like >>11503289 fit the description of jarpiggers not only implying that Japan invented something that they didn't, but WRPG devs copied them, despite it being the other way around.
>>11511812>gets baited by perennial contrarianism>gets upset about it in a different threadIt's probably more effective to be upset about it in the relevant thread.
>>11511812I usually just see people claiming Dragon Quest invented video game RPGs, then dismissing all the CRPGs due to their graphics and inaccessibility.
>>11511812Who is actually saying this though
>>11511848At least some of it is sheer ignorance. There is a JRPG bubble much like there is a Nintendo bubble.
>>11511785Don't be so quick to assume, there are entire communities (rpgcodex springs to mind) where WRPG fans complain about JRPGs taking all the spotlight in the genre and hold ancient CRPGs as the gold standard that nobody has come close to touching.
>>11511914Anything's got a bubble. You are likely part of quite a few yourselves. If you don't go out of your bubble, you simply won't know. Maybe you can tell them in an amicable manner with some examples. You'll quickly find out if it's bait or someone who just doesn't know. If they care to know is another matter entirely of course.
>>11511542By "western progenitor", I mean D&D, Wizardry, and Ultima. The JRPG creators of the 80s (aka the "OG designers") were huge fans of those series and it shows in the product. Alot of modern JRPGs (and isekai fantasy) are more or less aping Dragon Quest III without any understanding of WHY those classes, spells, or archetypes exist.
>would have been remembered somewhat favorably if it had been a Holiday 86 release for the NES>Only known know as a terrible piece of shit game, only because it was released after both Zeldas
>>11511593>Why do japanese always make rock walls like that? Because thats how they were drawn in early D&D books.
>>11511918Are they collectively on here whining about "weebshit" though?
>>11512161It was terrible for countless reasons. I rented that as a kid when it came out, along with my cousin because were were massively into AD&D and fantasy at the time. The NES was starved for RPGs at the time and this game nearly killed the genre for us. One of the few times we took a rental back to the store to exchange it for another game. Its on my top 3 worst experiences of the entire 8 bit era.
>>11510545okay, but very slow
>>11512195Oh, it's absolutely terrible; but American kids getting their hands on the first black box games wouldn't have known any better. Pro Wrestling and M.U.S.C.L.E. were pure dogshit, yet everyone fondly remembers them.By 1989, EVERYONE could tell how awful it was.
>>11511593Anon have you never seen a cobblestone wall?
>>11512252>Pro Wrestling and M.U.S.C.L.E.Madness. "Tag team wrestling" and muscle were shit. But pro wrestling? Star man and amazon? Thats the best wrestling game of the entire 8 and 16 bit era.
>>11512252/r/idiots zoomies and alfies are really bringing this place down...
>>11512028Don’t forget Rogue. The entire Mystery Dungeon / Shiren The Wanderer series was an attempt to merge NetHack with Dragon Quest.>>11511619Black Tiger / Dragon and The King of Dragons by Capcom made me lose many hours of my life.
>>11512452Love me some Shiren, but Fushigi no Dungeon is pretty much dead outside of Japan unless Pokemon are involved. I wish Etrian Odyssey's Mystery Dungeon spin-off had done well. I'd love to see a dedicated Western Medieval version of FnD that isn't Torneko focused.
>>11509256>Boomer Fantasy>Japanese developedOxymoron
>>11512161All of the Japanese artwork for the Hydlide games rules, it almost makes me wish they were albums instead of games because the games themselves seem tedious even for their time. I love the graphics in Virtual Hydlide though, may ultimately check that one out.
>>11511564under extreme graphical limitations you prioritize surfaces that are easy to read over realismbesides, it's a dungeon, not a mine shaft, most people would think of a dungeon as being intentionally constructed
