>However in recent years,Tekken 4has recovered to the point of being widely praised, and this is largely for its innovation in gameplay, atmosphere, and attention to detail>As of 2024, Harada revealed that Tekken 4 has fully grown in stature and has already sold over 4,350,000 copies, the same amount as its predecessorTekken Tag Tournament, despite when the games were only sold in PS2 copies and were not available in other platforms.>Harada has gone on to call Tekken 4 the best game in the series weeks after the2024 Evolution Championship Series, in an interview with commentator and former championJustin Wong.Apologize.
>>11509261I grew up on Tekken 4 and never noticed anything the spergs complain about. The game is pretty based.
>>11509281Thats cos you dont know how to play fighting games
>>11509261Shut the fuck up about 00s nostalgia, nobody cares faggot, this is the retro board
>>11509404ok boomer
>>11509410Now talk about your memories playing this game in the arcade or with friends: )It's clear the people most nostalgic about the 00s are people who weren't even alive during them
T4 is neat but a bad fighting game.
Crap for a final boss
>>11509436If T4 is a bad fighting game then 95% of fighting games are bad.
>>11509503How would you know lol, what year were you born in? Probably born DURING the time Tekken 4 came out, not old enough to be active in the scene
>>11509507I am pretty sure I am older than you, scene kid
>>11509509Lol I was born in the 80s, you were born in the late 90s at earliest.
>>11509507>fighting games, which were one of the most normie mainstream genres, were "le scene"FGC zoomer brainrot
>>11509390I do actually.
>>11509512>Lol I was born in the 80sWhat year exactly?
>>11509261>VF3 but trashNah, T4 was shit.
They never praise the gameplay.
QRD on why Tekken 4 is disliked? Curious about whether there's a real case to be made against it or if it's just FGC autism.
>>11509759It was slower, more grounded than Tekken 3 and Tag 1, with nerfed movement and nerfed juggling. Comp players also complained that uneven stages = junk. What's funny, when gaming journos were reviewing the game, they already knew that arcade version controversial among veteran players but apparently they couldn't get why, so if you read contemporary console Tekken 4 reviews, you'll see "uninspired" and "not different enough" complains.
>>11509507I know you're baiting, but I have never been active in the FGC, but I have played my share of fighters. Born in '87 if that pleases you.>>11509759+It looks great.+It innovates alot like adding walls.-The stages have have elevation which is fucked-some throws are changed into position changes.-diaper Heihachi-voice acting has everyone talking english-alot of broken shit
>>11509759The autistic issue is nerfed backdashes, which has maybe been softened as the worst thing ever by 8 forcing non-stop in your face swanging anyways The factual issue is wall infinites and other geometry jank, the cage stage in particular is fooked. DoA only gets away with arbitrary stage design because it has combo breakers
>>11509807>-voice acting has everyone talking englishAre you stupid? Jin talks english in the Hwoarang ending but talks Japanese for the rest, as do all the other Jap characters
>>11509261I think T4 was too different, too soon. The Tekken formula had just recently been solidified with T3, and the natural progression would have been to work on perfecting it while slowly introducing new elements. T4 essentially threw everything out the window, which is not what the fans wanted in the slightest. They wanted to see the evolution from T3.Tekken 5 ended up being that evolution, and it's frequently praised as the best Tekken and as one of the best FGs ever. T5 is what everyone wanted after T3. I think people would have been ready for T4 if it had been released much later in Tekken's life, after the formula had been perfected and players were open to experimentation and different gameplay experiences. If T5 was the game released after TTT, I think T4 being the 6th or even 7th title would have made it a success.
>>11509759>QRD on why Tekken 4 is disliked? Jin has a wall infinite and dashing was nerfed
>>11510131Great summary
>>11510131How did 5 evolve the formula? It always felt like they just back downed on everything & try to make it like 3 and before except streamlined and as safe as can be
>>11510237T5 was an evolution of T3. T3 only had infinite stages, T5 had walled stages with wall juggling. It introduced high and low crushes, and featured new characters that added different gameplay experiences than T3 had. It also had better balancing among the characters with less opportunities for death combos. That's the evolution. Also you know "evolution" doesn't mean "thing becomes better". It means self-referencing change over time. T4 was *almost* a different game than Tekken entirely, so much to that one could argue it was not an evolution of Tekken. If you took T4, but removed all references to Tekken and had new characters, it could probably be passed off as the first entry of a new game series.
>>11510286so Tekken 4 was the best Tekken game for people who don't like Tekken
>>11510290I don't know. Why would people who don't like Tekken like Tekken 4? Who's to say they don't like that formula either?
i found 4 disappointing compared to 3 and tag. mainly because of roster. but i still played the hell out of it. the inclined planes were a mistake but the destructible environment stuff was cool. i liked how you could save recordings of fights. i think my brother still has some of our matches on a memory card somewhere.
>>11510290makes sense given how t4fags talk about it.
>>11509261>didn't know Tekken 4 was seen as a weak entry in the serie, just got it as a kid, was impressed by the beautiful graphics and enthralled by the cool characters, randomly pressed buttons to do cool shit, learned a few moves like the tornado kick and had funglad I wasn't a fighting game autist, had a great time
>>11510286>"evolution" doesn't mean "thing becomes better"True, but if something only regresses it would be a Devolution
>>11510290More or less. Its one of those cases of the game not being bad at all, but it's a bad Tekken. If you were looking for a followup to 3, 5 is better in every single regard.
>>11510482Sure but actual devolution is so rare it's not worth talking about. For T5 to be a "devolution" of T4 it would have to be literally T3. Like T3 just re-released with higher resolution textures.
>>11510517T3 was the peak, you can't evolve from that, only add unnecessary shit.
As another anon stated juggle's were harder to carry and this in turn made matches more poke based, with a focus on chipping away at an opponent's health as opposed to melting 70%+ of their life bar in one combo.Coupled with the revision to dashing it shifted the dynamic away from using range as the primary defense mechanism to having to be in the pocket and actually defending. These major changes weren't to everyone's taste to put it mildly. I however verily much enjoyed the see-saw matches i would have against friends. The criticism that wall infinites or infinites somehow hampered T4 is just revisionist drivel parroted by autists and zoomers who weren't there. Getting the odd wall bounce 100% juggle/splat was pretty rare and in no way a viable strat. Did i have to worry about a good Violet or Steve using the exploit in certsin stages? Yes, but knowing about it pretty much mitigated the threat.Wall splat combo's were a bigger issue in T5 if we're going be honest, especially against a good steve or feng, who both were as overpowered in t5 as Jin was in t4, maybe moreso if you factor in their ridiculous damage output or how small the lifebars were in T5.
>>11510302>Why would people who don't like Tekken like Tekken 4?because something or another about traditional tekken gameplay offends their sensibilities
>>11511224>The criticism that wall infinites or infinites somehow hampered T4 is just revisionist drivel parroted by autists and zoomers who weren't there.Jin (and Steve?) being the only viable character because of wall infinites is literally one of two major criticisms of Tekken 4 that tekken autist compfags bring up no matter whatnot to say anything about it being overblown or whatever
>>11509261>Other gamers have commented Tekken 4 was so far ahead, as the last leap Tekken has made in new ideas, to the point of calling it the best in the series. [74][75][76] I just checked the sources, the source is an ''opinion piece'' on Medium.com, a youtuber and some fags opinion from an artbook. what a fucking pathetic thread.
>>11511360What's the problem? All three qualify for "other gamers".
>>115113643 fags saying a game is good doesn't mean it should be put on the wiki page, nor is it relevant. in-fact I'm pretty sure if someone with a wikipedia account reported it, the sentence and citations would be removed.
>>11511360>>11511364>>11511368Actually, the formatting of the sentence itself is atrocious, let alone the fact that it implies there's more than a handful of ''''notable'''' (lol) people who think that way. I'm willing to bet the Tekken 4 sperg on /vr/ recently added it.
>>11511368You are free to edit the Wikipedia page and add a "criticism" section if you think that it's too one-sided
>>11511378kek, you added that to the page yourself didn't you? Man, I fucking hate autistic trannies, you're the most annoying demographic on the internet.
>>11511378>>11511380The more I look, the worse it gets. fucking hell m8.
>>11511380Nah, you're the troon who added it
>>11511403Whatever you say bud. ''widely praised'' lmao, what does widely praised mean to you? And how long did it take you to find this random guys blog to use as a source?https://www.oldgamehermit.com/2021/09/review-tekken-4/
>>11511402Wtf is even happening right now, kek
>>11511417OP altered a wiki page with carefully researched, obscure crap about Tekken 4 to convince people it's now beloved. I got bored and decided to ''erhm acshully'' and check the sources.
>>11511415You tell me. Did you make an edit with shitty sources just to shitpost about it?
>>11511417Some troon edited wikipedia page citing shitty sources on purpoae and now "exposes" it on /vr/.
>>11511425>>11511430Play this lame game all you want lad, but at the end of the day your original intent behind this thread has failed. That's all that matters.
>>11511437It's your thread, isn't it?
>>11511127Except everyone in the Tekken playerbase including the game devs will tell you T5 is an evolution of T3 and it perfected the formula.
>>11511425>>11511430Lmao that's next level faggotry. Likely the same tranny who shits on 2D fighters in one thread and on 3D fighters in another thread.
>>11509261We all agree it had great style but gameplay it was slow and clunky and very boring, with horrific balance even by old fighting game standards. I wish they kept that tone and aesthetic though, Jin in that fit is the coolest any fighting game character has ever looked.
>>11511451The point is, they could add literally anything else instead of walls and costumes and still call it an "evolution" and "perfecting the formula" as long as it's not broken. Okay, costumes is what normies love but Tekken wouldn't be much different without walls. T8 arenas are so big that the walls are only there to prevent infinite KBDing.
>>11509804>Comp players also complained that uneven stages = junk.Meanwile in Japan VF3 with uneven stages = greatest 3D fighter ever
>>11509261Good. Haranigger came to sense finally then.
>>11509261>>11509290>>11511456Tekken 4 is fire and bussin', niggahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjcWxV1VDF0Even The Main Man puts that shit onghttps://youtu.be/BnfHGNdBXTU?si=7HjC1Djjimr3vDtL
>>11509281Me neither. I played a lot of Tekken 4, second only to 5.
Why are Tekken fans so mentally ill?
>>11512552Because like other degenerates in the FGC, they don't play the games for fun. They play it so they can become "hardcore gamer bros" (read: like autists) just like speedrunners.
>>11511469What the hell are you on about?
>>11509261This piece of shit killed my Tekken scene
They absolutely mutilated Jin so the game is trash.
>>11511360I think zoomers have lived being pushed around by social media opinions so much that they have an unnatural obsession with finding ways to subvert "opinionmaking" like being discord trannies and wikipedia manipulators. Even if they have to find the most idiotically trivial outlets for it like 20 year old games
>>11509261I played the entire series this summerI found myself playing 4 the most. I really like itI had my friends play it too, we all had a great time. Maybe 4 was really ahead of its time, everyone seems to be reevaluating it this year specifically. Not trying to be contrarian, I didn't know everyone hated on it until I went online after I was done with the series.>>11510131I agree with this guy. evaluating T4 now is different without the context and expectations of it being a follow-up to T3 that people had at release.>>11516057I really like your observation here. Annoying phenomenon. While I believe there is genuine power in consensus manufacturing, these kids are wasting their time and energy so badly, and ultimately are just producing noise. The past two weeks I've noticed that zoomers have discovered Sonic CD for the first time and are obsessed with it. Maybe they are psychologically compelled to make a mark on their fandoms by attaching themselves to overlooked entries? Or maybe some games are ahead of their time and find unintended audiences way in the future.
>most soulful game is also the worst one if you're looking for competently-designed fightingIt's not fair (although I can potentially see why those two things might be in contention with one another).
>>115092614 > Tag >3 > 2 >>>>>>>>>> anything else.
I basically invented the "atmosphere of t4" meme in my head before that youtube video that caused dozens of copycats. The writing of that paragraph is awful and clearly below Wikipedia standards.
>>11516371I'd say it's a toss up between 3, Tag and 4 (being the best Tek)
>>11516363It's perfectly fine for buddies on a couch mashing against each other, I'd say it's better than T3 for true casuals even as someone that hates T4. And it's not even the high profile buggy stuff like uneven ground or wall infinites that messed it up. It's that it drops a nuclear bomb on spacing in favor of making everything in the game poke poke poke. And it's clear they didn't know exactly what they were designing because when it comes down to poke poke poke a few characters are obscenely overpowered at it. They nerfed the shit out of backsteps and made almost every string in the game advance your character far forward, so you're just constantly glued to range 0, starting from the first frame of the round because they added pre-start movement, and often in tiny joke arena stages. It's altogether just a completely different game and almost all the returning character's movesets inherited from previous games are not properly designed for it, and they obviously made radical decisions without understanding what game they were going to end up with. They were just changes made in isolation intended to "increase aggression" like a lot of shitty fighting game directors end up thinking are genius.
>>11516048This is the first time he was actually cool though
I didn't like this series until it went full anime-retard.
>>11516946I think Jin was way more fun in 4 than in any other game.
>>11517273Especially if you enjoy having an across the board 7-3 matchup
Wife
>>11511364You might as well cite a 4chan post at that point.
>>11511360Weird revisionism because I only see praise for Soul Calibur and DOA 3
>>11517497DOA3 was just a poor man's VF4
>>11509281Sounds like you can't move in Tekken and have never played someone who can do the wall infinite>have no taste buds>"yeah i never noticed anything wrong with the way this dog turd tastes! must be the food elitists again!I don't hate Tekken 4 but dumb take m8
>>11517363>those defeat moans
