Redpill me on Marathon. Why should I play it? I know it has a stupid crazy story that ties into like 4 other game franchises and is even referenced in Half Life and System Shock, but what about the other stuff?

You should play it because it is a solid shooter to the core that doesn't diddle with unnecessary mechanics and its cool locales and intriguing levels are well thought of with a hefty alien world and lore built around to it all. Like Half-Life and System Shock, Marathon's gameplay ties well with its story but instead of linearity or item management you got labyrinth-like levels with various alien races often having a brawl with each other. It is in fact recommended to read a bit about the different factions (are there even manuals available on the current releases?)

The level design and storytelling can be a bit of a trample in the 1st one at times but it does pay off to hang in there for the 2nd game is a lot better in this sense (the developers actually cared about their strong points and learned from the mistakes). I haven't got around to playing Infinity yet.

Idk why Marathon has such a distinct reputation... maybe because of its initial release and availability, maybe because it is very much of its own world. Nevertheless the soul, gist and oomph gameplay is all very much there but if you can't find it here there's always plenty of doom wads to get to.

Shit level design

Start with the second game if you don't like the first. First game was closer to a maze-y dungeon crawler while M2 had great level design with more action. It also had the best shotgun in any videogame.

If you are curious about the glory of Apple's only good shooter during that era, there you go. Most of the story is, literally, lore autism btw since outside the terminals you need to know things like an obscure and all but forgotten evolution philosophy called Vitalism or stuff like the works which inspired Rampancy. Game itself is pretty fun on multiplayer, you can see that Bungie always prioritized multiplayer.

play it if it interests you, you don't need to follow some curated cool kid's club list of games you must play or else you're not a true hardcore intellectual
