I was checking out the 1996 run and there's this neat "Top 108" feature in the first May issue listing the best-reviewed games for the then dying system (based on their original scores when they were first reviewed). Here are the top Western entries and their scores:[35/40] Lemmings*[33/40] SimCity*[33/40] Flashback[32/40] The Lost Vikings[32/40] Wolfenstein 3D[32/40] Donkey Kong Country 2[31/40] Populous*[31/40] Super Smash TV[31/40] Shadowrun[31/40] Donkey Kong Country[31/40] Theme Park(Japanese-developed ports/adaptations are marked*)
For some reason Japan loves Theme Park. They had exclusive versions there with more Japanese visuals.
seems like they like the type of games they haven't really seen, they probably wouldn't like euro shooters but I wonder if they would like Earthworm Jim or Ultima, wizardry on snes was popular there.
>>11510128They loved Ultima on Famicom at least
>>11510128Actually, Earthworm Jim is one of the [30/40] entries, which I didn't include above, along with stuff like Another World or Mortal Kombat (!). They even put a Famitsu "good games" seal in the ads they ran back in 1995
>>11510128>>11510207It's interesting to note that the only other platformers in the top ranks are Super Mario World (34/40) and Yoshi's Island (33/40).
>>11510114>Super Smash TVi'd buy that for 100円
>>11510114When Famitsu did that 2006 reader poll that I see referenced fairly often for the best games of all time SFC Sim City came in at number 93.
You mean Famitsu gave good ratings to games that weren't RPGs AND they were western games?
>>11510349Obsessed
>>11510349Lol to be fair all of the entries reviewed 36/40 or better were Japanese-developed, AND almost half of them were JRPGs, but the top scores didn't go to pure JPRG fare: A Link to the Past (39/40) and Shiren the Wanderer (38/40) got first and second place, with F-Zero tying with FFVI for third (37/40).Iirc no game until OoT got a perfect 40/40
>>11510114>[32/40] Donkey Kong Country 2>[31/40] Donkey Kong CountryDKC3 got a 30/40 later that year apparently
>>11510114populous was a first party release on pc engine>hucard version with special backup battery>CD version with exclusive bomberman stage and other levels
>>11510146Best Ultima port imo
>>11512849Fun fact: there's no backup battery in Populous Hucard.
>>11510114Lemmings sucks, but Flashback and Shadowrun are actually good.
