I love the retro aesthetic in HL2.
The retro PC everywhere are beautiful especially nowadays. Most locations will have a PC in them.

However I have to ask is there any in universe logic for the resistance to use PCs on most locations?

Like why would they have a PC?
HL1 is all in a government facility so the computers make sense since they are used to send messages or run simulations or write reports.

However why would there by PCs in other resistance locations? What are they using for a PC? Especially a PC that ma can be from the year 2004 (or 1998? When did the invasion start?).

>They use them to record data from measurements.
In science places yes however WTF are they measuring in normal rebel outposts?
Radios make sense for communication however why PCs?

>Security cameras.
Yes however seeing as the monitors are CRTs and these are obviously 2004 PCs the HDDs do not have the capacity to record all video feeds and will fill up short.

In 2004 there where VHS and other analog forms of recording video that did the same purpose, possibly more quiet. Why would the resistance have a gigantic PC brick who needs uninterrupted power, consumes lots of energy and makes lots of noises, Hard drives and fans are noisy especially in computers from this era and the CD or DVD drive will also be loud.

So why would they have them?

You know a PC for recording or video footage from all cameras and registering equipment would be a great idea... Only not possible for a PC made in 2004. More like PCs from 2024!

So why do they have them? Laptops are a far smarter option for transportation laptop_VS_PC meme. And you need them on the go so they are a better option.

Other equipment like radios makes more sense. Despite being gigantic
-No need to restart
-can run 24/7
-no noise output

>The internet
Very retarded not only would the internet not exist in this dystopia where people have no idea where their loved ones did go...
Going on the internet would be suicide since the combine would record all internet activity.

So is there any in universe reason for the resistance being obsessed over 1998-2004 retro PCs?

I presume the scientists can use it to use wolfram alpha or something like that however combat grunts do not have need for this.

Looks like Valve simply added PCs because they where using PCs at the office a lot. Similar to the PCs in Postal 2. However Postal 2 is 300% excused since they are only used like in normal civilian life of 2003.

it's because the guys making the game had those computers. Stupid question.

Gaming as expected.
Would they not be preloading that PC with all the pirated games they can get their hands on?

I mean if these are 1998 PCs they can play
>DOOM II
And the wards can last you a lifetime!
>Duke Nukem 3D
>Blood
>Quake 1
>Quake 2
>Carmageddon 1
>Dungeon Keeper 1
>Command and Conquer Tiberian Dawn
>Command and Conquer Red Alert 1
>Mortal Kombat Trilogy and 1 and 2 and 3 and Ultimate 3
>Populous the beginning
>System Shock!

There are so many options here!

>after your question was so stupid
It was not. WE do not see the resistance member play any games on them.

I amused Half-Life 1 is not a game that did come out in the universe of Half-Life 2 (or Half-Life 1).
Or this opens meta existential subjects. However everything in possible with the G-man.

Holly fuck! I did not start a folder however looking at them was a passion of mine.
I was thinking I am the only ONE!

I always looked at the ones in Counter Strike Source and alien SF tech was also my interest.

Agree.
It is a mediocre game, the puzzles are interesting however mostly something you never want to replay for 5 years minimum.

There was nothing lost since valve decided to never make more half life games.

I think that's pretty much all I have, I used to have more but my Steam screenshots got erased when I updated to windows 10 because I had it installed on my second drive and you're forced to install it on your first drive before telling it to use the second one in the settings and by the time I realized the windows back up had deleted itself

there aren't even any pcs in this pic despite it being part of your opening post about pcs in hl2
>>
>>11511818
oh look, we got a masterbaiter here
>>
>>11516062
>there aren't even any pcs in this pic
YES. The reason is that they are TVs/Monitors who show the cameras outside.

This makes sense.
However using a PC for this is deeply questionable.
Since a 2004 PC can not record lots of videos from these cameras. And it if is only a monitor/TV ... why use a PC?
>>
>>11516531
>Since a 2004 PC can not record lots of videos from these cameras.
and why is that?
>>
>>11516540
>and why is that?
1) Because you have less then 500 GiB (OR LESS!) of HDD space.

2.1) because VHS and VHD based TV/Camera recorders existed in the 90s and early 2000s
And you get like 6h VHS castes excluding specialized equipment used in all these 90s and 80s CCTV setups.

2.2) VHS gives you a stable 6h and it is 6h for computer recording it will depend on how the picture is compressed.

> can not record lots of videos
PS: I was referring to the video length.

3) Because on the fly video compression was not a real thing in the 90s and 2000s.

Try using fraps on your 2004 gaming PC and see how big the files are.

So a VHS based setup is the most logical there.

Sure kid if you time traveled with a 2024 gaming laptop who has 4TB on its SSDs that is preload with all the essential software for recording video and the right cables(to convert from analog video/TV signal to HDMI or something that plugs into the USB) and magically gave one to every resistance member then yes the resistance can use these 2024 computers to record all their cameras (still will use TV to have a wall of screens BTW) and do all kinds of calculations on them and also game.

You can do the same with PCs from 2016 however a PC is far harder to move around especially in the moment where you need to park your car and the resistance is occupying some random houses with a make shift base. A laptop can run on its battery is resistant to random power interruptions who you get if you live in a dystopia. And a laptop is far easier to move since all it needs is a backpack and you throw it + the necessary power cables and mouse into it and GO.

Like I did say I love the aesthetic of 90s and 2004 PCs however they make no sense in this setting.

They make more sense in Postal 2 and Half Life 1. Very hard to imagine the resistance carry's around the latest and most powerful gaming PCs of 2004 while constantly getting bombed by the combine.

Here is another thing for the gaming PC VS VHS. You are never sure to really to find the perfect gaming PC and not some random shit budget PC from 1991. Good luck video recording on that shit brick!

While VHS (players and castes) even from the 80s is usable and will work. There must be a magic killer 2004 gaming PC shop shop who gives the resistance a unlimited supply of these PCs while the civilians get even their clothing confiscated by the combine and all their personal belongings and suitcases.

Like I was saying love the aesthetic however this part makes no sense. Or G-Man is selling these 2004 gaming PCs to them. Who the fuck knows at this point.

Start an alien invasion to profit of the humans buying your 2004 gaming PCs, G-Man was talking business after all!

I wouldn't know. Like most retro PC gamers, I have never once paid for a computer game.
