Is there a game from the Windows 98 or XP era that you could not get to run on modern hardware no matter what you tried? if so which one was it?
Microprose's MtGI ended up emulating a Win98 machine in 86box to run it.
Die Hard Nakatomi Plaza
also hows retro gaming on linux these days? Is it more compatible with retro gaymes unlike windows?
>>11511903>Half-LifeIs for faggots and was never good.
Grand Theft Auto III
>>11512554GTA San Andreas too. SA opens the menu but crashes when starting a game. III doesn't even launch.
What 1990's and 2000's console would the kid who hated PC gaming, hated Half life, hated Playing on PC, Hated Valve, and was that kind of kid without any friends and who played alone during recess at school have had?
>>11512550But enough about Fallout
Mechwarrior 3 and 4.
>>11512562>was that kind of kid without any friends and who played alone during recess at school have had?I may hate Half Life and Valve, but I never hated PC gaming and I had plenty of friends, many who were into wrestling in fact and we would often play WWF wrestling games. Had a SNES, Genesis, Sega Saturn, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 during the 90's and 00's. I ended up getting a PC by 2002. Multiple friends I had also had a PC during the 90's and early 00's. So I don't know what kid specifically you can think of that hated PC's, Half-Life, Valve or PC gaming with zero friends in real life, but I can assure you it might be your imagination.
>>11511903Wipeout 2097
>>11511903hitman contracts. it runs, but it doesn't run properly and all the mods/fixes I try don't help.
>>11511908A lot of retro games I ran on linux ended up working on linux when they crash on windows xp.
>>11512554>>11512557There are thousands of mods for these games, their communities are still incredibly active, just read (or watch) a guide or two.Or just buy the definitive editions, if you're a brainlet.
>>11513303For me Linux has been worse than windows for win9x games but anything compatible with 2000/XP tends to work better out of the box.
>>11513320I just hate that most games will not work at all unless I apply DgVoodoo2.
>>11511904so it runs on modern hardware
>>11513023You had that many consoles growing up? What are you? A richfag?
>>115119033D Ultra Minigolf Deluxe. I got it to "play" barely and the audio doesn't work.
>>11513393Yes I had that many. Rich? Yes. Fag? No.
>>11511903the EverQuest tutorial client from 1999 runs fine, actually it runs amazing because the frame rate and resolution both scale up perfectlyif you get magenta outlines on your text you need to disable cleartype(I fucked around with the files to load zones other than the tutorial in the screenshot)
>>11511903Wizards & warriors.Very underrated. But even the GOG version crashes constantly
>>11513449Eh, I got it to run no problem on Win11, not even the GoG version. The only issue is with the mouse, it's been years so I forget what the exact issue was but iirc sensitivity was fucked an unfixable with massive differences between horizontal and vertical.
>>11513456if it came out in 2000 there's a 99% chance it used directinput for mouse controls, not sure why it would have issues but you might be able to just drop a different dll in the folder and see how it goes
>>11511908For me it's worked really well. It took some effort (like a lot of things in linux) to set up Wine properly with separate directories for 32-bit Wine and 64-bit. But once that initial configuration was done it's been able to handle most win9x games I've thrown at it right off the bat. And running smoothly too despite my laptop's age.
>>11511903Neat chart where do get them? The wiki?
>>11513517I made it myself. From memory. Hand drawing each cover to the best of my ability.
>>11511903Mech Commander 1. Can't get that shit running
>>11513006I got those running in Windows 10 with no effort using Russian ware "MechWarrior Quadrology"https://archive.org/download/MechWarriorQuadrology
>>11513683It seems for old windows games there's always some Russian programmer somewhere who's developed a fan made patch lol.
>>11513330Dgvoodoo is based though. Fucking miracle application.
>>11511903i'm on linux so i can run all these games (:
>>11513304I haven't found jack shit that helps. You're talking out of your ass and you know it.
>>11513387No?If I have to emulate the entire hardware in software it doesn't run on the actual hardware.
>>11511903Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove
>>11513804I've yet to see a glide game that it made run without moderate to severe graphical issues and old DX games just werk without it (or the problem are unrelated to graphics)the only use I've gotten out is improving the graphics of old DX games since it lets you override settings
>>11511905Pretty sure I posted a solution to the issues you had in the thread you made at the time, did you not try those?
>>11511903For me, it's NOLF 1 and Mechwarrior 2 (Win95 version)
>>11511903Redguard runs, but runs terribly. Also, there are a couple of games where without a shell you can't even get the installer to unpack. There's a little known game called Space Bastards that I want to try again that I can't be bothered with the rigmoral of setting up, but may get there at some point.Midtown Madness 2 is also one I have had a lot of issues with, even after following guides. The first one runs really well though.
>>11513886Mechwarrior 2 was one of the games that was such a pain to get working I ended up just buying a junk PC to run things from that era on.

Only thing I couldn't get running was Crimson Skies.
No, my first experience with a non-DOS PC game being unplayable on a modern OS was with Dark Seed II for Windows 3.1.I got it to install and launch in a 3.1 VM but then it had a bunch of audio glitches and kept crashing.

only 16bit games and Nakatomi Plaza is a problem for mesay whatever you want about windblows, but the backwards compatibility is great
>>11515172>works on my 7 & 10How? I had to use PCem to play Wipeout.
I found a good while this game randomly browsing archive.orghttps://archive.org/details/FutureHeroI couldn't find any info about this game, so I decided to try it myself to see what it's about, but it keeps refusing to start. Can somebody give it a quick look to see what it's about?

Army men RTS. I don’t understand why I cannot get it to run, when others can get it going. Following the same instructions and all their wack arcane suggestions and nothing. I don’t even like the game that much, it’s just bothersome I can’t get it to run
>>11516041have you tried the GoG "version" the store page says it runs on windows 7 to 11 so i guess its patched to run on modern windows.
>>11515932I used winevdm to get 16 bit support and installed it fine but the game itself refused to open.
>>11516289wait, are you talking about the first Wipeout or 2079?
>>115163342097, it has a 16 bit installer but you can use https://github.com/otya128/winevdm to run those.
>>11516419I used that generic 32 bit installer that you place in the installation folder (copy everything of the disc to a folder on your computer) replace the setup exe of the game and put the generic 32 bit installer in it and install it.
