Have any of you beaten this without using a guide?

I've never made it more than 5 minutes in Hexen. Those nerds seemed to want to run away from the winning Doom formula. There are crappy D&D fps attempts from before and after Doom and nobody liked any of them. Quake was going to be one too

No, I've always hated the level design in Hexen. I wanted to like that game. It looked and sounded fun. Those levels though...

The more times you play it the better it gets. It's like the quest design in vanilla WoW, first time people complain how hard it is to find anything, but when you learn the structure you really appreciate the sublime skein the design weaves. The scripts/progression in Hexen is at the same time surprisingly complex and simple. The first hub can be one of the most confusing because the next place to go is basically in front of you whenever you do something new in the levels and exit to the hub, but if you miss it you start running around everywhere, which wastes a lot of time and confuses you even more. Also, the sliding steel bar triggered by the bull switches in Guardian of Steel is not very clear at all.

Yeah but not the sequel.

Is Hexen worth playing?

Won't hurt to try, it's a classic and has great visuals. But the whole thing is like a parody of the 90's "key hunt" design in first person shooters.
>find a brown button hidden behind a brown tree
>"1/4 of a puzzle has been solved"
>spend 20 minutes backtracking through the level looking for the other 3 buttons
Although, it's not as bad as Hexen 2, that one has key items and moon logic and can be very hard without a guide.

It's a fantastic game up through the second hub, then it turns into a giga slog. I've replayed it off and on for decades.

Don't worry about the youtuber whining "waaah the puzzles are haard", they're not, it's just a meme. But the numbers in the game aren't well balanced and it really becomes painful to play by the third hub.
>>
Yes but I sequence broke some of the stairs in the first hub on my first two playthroughs

Overall it's not that bad, there is logic behind most puzzles, that logic is just not always telegraphed

play heretic instead

I had to use it a few times but it was still doable
The expansion is complete bullshit though, fuck the endlessly respawning enemies
