Post some callbacks in /vr/ games. I'm a sucker for this shit.

air zonk has a section in the final stage thats a callback to bonk

that final stage is honestly one of the best in all of gaming. 15 minute long monster of action and setpieces

Thanks for posting this OP. When I was a kid I got really psyched when I found the secret room in this level. First game I ever 100%'d kek

Dragon Quest 3's penultimate (iirc, might be the very last one) area is just the entire map of Dragon Quest 1
>>

They should've made the entirety of Sonic 1 playable like that because unlocking that shit is no small feat
>>

The end of Mother 3 has a callback section

That felt really special in 2001 but not anymore because SEGA has been shoving GHZ into every fucking game since Generations
>>
>>11512940
That's okay, but nothing compared to randomly running into Alfegard in Dragon Warrior 2.
Absolutely blew my 11 year old mind.
Going to the dragon lord's castle, seeing someone sitting on his throne and wasting all kind of herbs, etc to full heal, in preparation for the battle, just to get dialogue was amazing also.
>>
>>11512953
Ohh right, it was also in 2, completely forgot about that

StarTropics II's final chapter takes place on the island where the first game started off and has a recreation of the first dungeon, and the giant snake boss returns midway through as a skeleton zombie.

Admit it, this wasn't a satisfying reward. Especially after the car level.

super mario rpg, paper mario 64, and paper mario ttyd have sections where you (and your partners in ttyd) can turn 8 bit.
>>
>>11513028
I remember the SMRPG one, but not the rest. Are they only from the remakes?
>>
>>11513040
no they're in the original. in ttyd you have to drop down from the rightmost grate in the x-naut base's attic, and in 64 you have to jump inside a vase in boo's mansion.
>>
>>11513040
They were in the original games, too. Was something of a tradition until the Wii game.

On a similar subject, the Viruses from Dr. Mario appear in M&L: Superstar Saga appear as enemies in Hoohoo Hooniversity. They change colors when you hit them and matching all of them to a color kills them instantly.
>>
>>11512865
Was this the first meta callback? As in this case, not just referencing a previous game in the series, but referencing that fact that the previous games were on a monochrome console.
>>
>>11512865
Super Mario Bros. 3 has a two-player battle mode that is literally the original Mario Bros. arcade game. The Shellcreepers are now Spinies to warn you not to jump on them, but otherwise plays exactly the same.
>>
Never played Banjo Tooie. Were there any good callbacks to Banjo Kazooie?
>>
I had no idea GTA III was referenced in SA so when I beat SA for the first time last year I was really surprised.

You mean that there's a mission set in the mafia section of Liberty City lol?
>>
Wizardry 4's city/castle at the end of the game is the place where your party worked out of in Wizardry 1, and you can visit the locations you only saw as menus in the first game.
Pitfall : The Mayan Adventure has the original Pitfall game hidden in the game.
Day of the Tentacle has the original Maniac Mansion playable on an in-game computer.
Donkey Kong(94) on the Game Boy has the original arcade's Donkey Kong levels for the first few levels, then the rest of the game is original.
Mega Man 3 brings back the Yellow Devil from the first game and upgrades him.
Hitman Contracts is a giant callback, reusing and modifying a large chunk of levels from the first Hitman game. Namely Hong Kong, Rotterdam, and the hotel level. The first level is also a reworked version of the last two levels from the original, with a greatly expanded basement. Only now you are going in the opposite direction.
The first level of Frogger on PS1 is the original Frogger level but in the new game's 3D engine. The rest of the game is everything after you manage to beat that, similar to Donkey Kong on GB.
FF9 is full of callbacks to previous FF games. Garland, Princess Cornelia, Hilda, Cid, Guy, the four elemental guys are named Maliris(Kary in the FF1 english translation, Marilith in the JP), Tiamat, Kraken, and Lich, the Invincible, Namingway, and Cloud's Buster Sword in that one weapon shop.

Something about the Dragonlord's grandson being a pacifist that just sits in his castle enjoying life without assaulting the rest of Alefgard is unendingly amusing to me. Guy has a cool ass castle and doesn't need much else, I respect that.
>>
>>11513551
No. The Lucasarts PC games had been doing that sort of humor fro a while. Day of the Tentacle is full of goofy meta jokes about the first game being on the Commodore 64 (IIRC, at one point there's even a joke where a character is making a reference to the first game, and an unnecessary screencap of it appears on-screen as a visual aid, despite the two games' art styles looking nothing like each other).

Sonic Adventure 1, when you visit Eggman's base, you'll see Mecha and Metal Sonic in capsules. You can play as the latter if you'll collect all emblems. At the start of the Amy's story, she remembers events of CD, albeit retconned a little. The music for Windy Valley and Twinkle Circuit also references 3D Blast.
>>
>>11513591
Yes, the whole Spiral Mountain.

20 years before this game came out the year was 1981. Super Mario Bros did not exist and neither did the NES.

Melee turns 24 years old this year.

Crazy to think about.
>>
>>11513765
You can even jump on the Goombas Mario-style for a heart pick-up. There's also Piranha Plants, Thwomps, Shy Guys, Bob-Ombs, Kirby for some reason, and even Wart as a guest NPC.

Vampire Killer, Bloody Tears and Beginning rearranged.
I think the Haunted Castle game already did that too? At least with Bloody Tears, but the use of the old tracks rearranged during the last levels on IV was extremely effective. After that it became a staple of Castlevania to reuse those 3 themes.
>>
>>11515271
Bloody Tears, a very rare callback in the series indeed

Never knew that. Interestingly they use the intro 'cutscene' theme from 3D Blast in that racing part before the actual stage

Kirby would kick Wart's ass for messing up dreams
Wart and Dedede would probably get along and visit each other's royal tea parties until they won't share a cookie and ban each other from visiting forever

I know but it comes out of nowhere in a game that was never 8bit. Literally one screen from this.

Now that I think about it the one wing representing incompleteness is from Xenogears and there's a boss named after the Gnosis.

Not enough people talk about this game.
Even if Kojima wasn't involved, it's a better follow up to classic Metal Gear than Solid ever was. Nojiri and Fukushima clearly had a very deep respect for the series.
>>
>>11514142
You forgot Richard.
>>
>>11517259
It was just MGS1 with the cast and setting rearranged, with implication that it's all just Raiden in VR Training doing a fictionalized semi-retelling of Shadow Moses before he does the real thing in MGS2.
>>
>>11517137
This reminds me, wasn't there a similar thing in Shenmue 2? In the first game, it remembers which photo you take and in the next one, character will show it to his friend
