Why does /vr/ never talk about Atari or Midway?
>>
>>11513435
not many people here have played Gauntlet and Atari is not within the age range here---at least not anymore
>>
>>11513435
What happened to Midway again? Some French assholes like Infogrammes or Ubisoft bought them, right?
>>
Most Midway and Atari (arcade) discussion devolves into the sad truth that their games are quarter munchers.
>>
>>11513607
Warner Bros absorbed them, and now all they do is Mortal Kombat.
Some went to Raw thrills and basically just make the same shit but fancier graphics.
>>
>>11513435
Isn't there an Atari 2600 thread up right now?
>>
>>11513651
Just missed it

You're thinking of Atari, the brand got bought up and they just puppet it because you can easily gaslight boomers gamers into thinking that current atari is somehow the same atari from the 70s.
>>
>>11513435
99% of Atari games are legitimately terrible, or just horrendous arcade ports no one has any reason to play. The games don't really have much to talk about anyway because they're all so simplistic.
Midway doesn't get talked about a lot because the board is filled with weebs and weebs are overwhelmingly shut ins who never went to arcades, or zoomers who weren't even born when arcades were a thing
>>
>>11513435
There are forums bigger than this board that just talk about Atari. 4chan is now a zoomer site but even old 4chan was slightly outside the right age group.
>>
>>11513663
>muh arcade accuracy
Grow up. They're great conversions for inferior hardware.
>>
>>11513435
idk about midway, but atari games have not aged well for the most part. pretty much anything before gen 4 is too simplistic and boring for most people. even boomers who grew up with that shit would agree objectively, although some of us__ might still enjoy them solely for nostalgia.
>>
>>11513723
>gen 4
sorry, i meant before gen 3. too lazy to delete and repost. nes/sms are great consoles.
>>
>>11513663
They do produce kino once in a blue moon

This is true, but my god do 2600 games make great palate cleansers after you've run through a long-as-fuck modern game. To their credit, they cut ALL the crap and thus live or die by whether the gameplay alone can scratch some itch you happen to have at the moment.

In a lot of ways, phone games would fit the same niche if they weren't all horrible garbage: fuck around for 5-30 minutes and do something else.
>>
>>11513768
Just got done with a non-retro 100+ hour RPG (not that it was particularly complex) and am now checking out a mid 2000s digital wargame. After that I roll back to gen 2 if I got nothing specific I want to play. Definitely a welcome break.

Pretty much any old game is too simplistic and boring for most people, even on this board which is nominally retro but is full of zoomers talking about Halo and Half Life 2. Atari 2600 is great and people still play games of similar complexity (on their phones). Getting better at something and being in the zone non-stop is fun. In a way it's an experience closer to real-life sports than later, story-based games.
The graphics are very limited but when a game takes advantage of the limitations and gets it right, it can be amazing, pure soul with a unique almost analog touch.

I prefer Williams
>Robotron 2048
>Joust
>Sinistar
>Defender

who later acquired Midway/Bally
>Tron/Disks of Tron
>Tapper
>Rampage
>Spy Hunter

Atari is regularly discussed in quieter corners while Midway has its games recognized as classics like any other contemporary golden age arcade company.
>>
>>11513435
We did. The problem is the mods went full retard and allowed sixth gen.
>>
>>11513435
I played Atari 2600 as child and I still don't have any nostalgia for it. Those games are just too shallow and the ones that have some value are arcade ports with a much, much better version.
>>
>>11513902
Joust is so fucking good that Nintendo/Hal copied it for Balloon Fight
>>
This is millenial japslop larp board, very few gen x GODS here
>>
>>11513435
What is there to talk about? Atari made janky consoles and Midway made sports slop and quarter munching slop. Nothing special.
>>
>Quarter muncher
>Hasn't aged well
>Not enough going on
What board am I on
>>
>>11514281
NBA Jam will never hold a candle to Seikinsu Dekkiamari Destiny Tale

I'm a zoomer weeaboo and I fucking love Williams, their game design feels very Japanese which is probably why so many Japanese developers ripped off their games
>>
>>11513435
the fuck we going to talk about?
do you guys rerember when the white square hit the other white square and it when blop?

enduro is the best game in the atari 2600 and you cant prove me wrong
>>
>>11513664
>4chan is now a zoomer site
what gave it away? perhaps it this thread with comments like, atari is boring, pre 4th gen is simplistic, midway only makes quarter munchers, or the best, "nobody" likes atari
>>
>>11514287
It really doesn't take that much observation to realize most Midway games are infamous quarter suckers, with the "time per credit" mechanic in games like Terminator 2 and the cheating AI in Cruisn.
>>
>>11514314
Enduro is great. Personally I rate Air Raid and Montezuma's Revenge over it but it's fun and the use of color is really creative. I think my first experience with it was in a huge bootleg arcade cabinet with a full-sized steering wheel.
>>
NFL BLITZ was a great game and the only reason I vaguely understand the rules of football
>>
>>11514778
the original pitfall is great too
>>
How was the SNES port of NBA Jam? I remember it being very popular at arcades but I don't remember anyone I knew having a home version, so I assume it sucked. It got fairly late ports to Saturn and PSX in late '95, but it would have been a little old by then.
>>
>>11513435
I don't like Midway anymore, and talking about Atari reminds me of the ghouls puppeting their corpse.
>>
>>11514913
Was decent but largely if you wanted arcade at home you had Sega. Not saying Nintendo couldn't see TMNT, Knights of the Round an such but it felt inferior to Segas near 1T1 ratio. >>11514914 Last midway I picked up was Rampage the vegas version, very odd thing.
