Has anyone ever compiled a list of all the foot running racing games? Am I missing any?I don't mean games that include a running minigame, I mean games that are all about racing on foot.In my years of gaming, these are the only three I ever came across not counting track and field games. This needs to be talked about. Mad Dash Racing also has my vote as best on-foot racing game ever made.
>>11514261You've never played Running Wild? Me neither.
>>11514267Holy shit, I've never even heard of it.I can finally add another game to this obscure sub-genre.I'm gonna play it now.
My brain just assumed this was a low budget low effort advert for cheap games that you'd see on a game magazine in 2000, but then I saw Putin's face Also isn't there an NES track game, I wouldn't call it a racing game though
Rayman M (aka Rayman Arena) is spin-off of Rayman 2, initially made for PS2 and later completely remade from scratch for Xbox and Gamecube. The game is a "party game" split between arena battles and running races. Ubisoft later made a significantly cut down version for PS1 called Rayman Rush which removed battles, leaving only running stages.
>>11514279There is but we aren't gonna count them since they are more like sports titles.
>>11514280Holy fucking shit I never knew this. I knew Rayman Arena existed but not this racing only PS1 port. The on-foot racer rabbit hole continues to go deeper.PS1 is now winning with two games in this genre. I used to think this genre was so obscure it was at most 1 game per console.
>>11514270It's Sonic R for PlayStation. It's not good.
>>11514325None of them are good besides Mad Dash in my experience.Unless someone can challenge it, I'd say Mad Dash is the best on foot racing game ever made followed by Popeye: Rush For Spinach (which nobody but me has played).
There are a couple for the Family trainer map on Famicom and you're actually supposed to do the running irl
>>11514332Too gimmicky to count in this list but still a worthy mention for the discussion as I didn't know about this either.
Dashin Desperados
Hashire Hebereke
>>11514348Damn, you're right. I would count this.>>11514354Another I've never heard of, and it's a sunsoft joint.Damn bros, are there any more?
Hana Barbera's Turbo Toons on SNESit sucks as well
>>11514261Running High, psx japan only.
>>11514261No mention of Pepsi Man?
>>11514335it counts though. it's an on foot race even without the accessory.
>>11514419Not a racing game.
>>11514419not really a racing game
>>11514261It blows my mind that they never made a Sonic R sequel. It's a franchise where most of the characters run fast, yet they keep shoving them into vehicles...
>>11514354>filename.lol. I too will look into that game
>>11514443Okay, then I will count it for the infographic.>>11514414This one looks really cool. I think I have heard of this one but maybe something else uses that name too.
>>11514328There's a number of PSX-exclusives that model themselves closely on certain Saturn titles, and the results are a mixed bag.
>>11514280>Rayman MWatching footage of this makes me realize how much I miss playing fighters and party games with friends growing up. I got into playing competetive strategy and shooter games here and there but most people get burnt out on that shit pretty quick
>>11514261Sketchin' for the Mega Drive/Genesis if rollerblades count as on foot racing
>>11514261Taz-Mania (SNES)
Does Micro Maniacs count? I played it a bunch on the PS1 as a kid and enjoyed it back then but I haven't played it in many many years.
You might count these as they start off with a foot race and end in a fighting arena:Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundoukai - NES/PCEngineDowntown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku: Dokodemo Daiundoukai - GBnot /vr/:Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundoukai - All Star Special - PS3Touhou Daiundoukai - PCTouhou Daiundousai - PC - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL1onJxG32o
>>11514261might be cheating but there's a physicality that gives me on-foot vibes more than using a vehicle
>>11514267I played the demo lots as a kid
>>11514664I really enjoyed this game, or atleast my memory says i did. I only rented it a few times but its stuck with me. Didnt the gran turismo team work on it?
>>11514664riding an animal makes it more of a kart racer. otherwise we'd have to say horse racing games are kart racers and that's dumb.
>>11514685*horse racing games are on foot games
>>11514267This and terracon are the PS1 unknown masterpieces
>>11514261Pokemon Dash? It's not retro tho
>>11514685That being said, Zelda should have gotten one similar to the bomberman racer in the 2000s
>>11514605>>11514619Are you racing against other people in those though?
>>11514261No Iridium Runners? Granted it's a massive piece of shit but it fits the bill.
>>11514631>Touhou DaiundousaiThis looks fun as hell.
I want to create space for a conversation around the niche but underappreciated category of foot racing games. As someone who values comprehensive knowledge, I’m wondering if anyone has curated a definitive list of games within this genre. To clarify, my focus is on games that are fully dedicated to foot racing as their primary mechanic—not titles where a running minigame is embedded in a broader gameplay experience. From my lived experience in gaming, I’ve only encountered three such titles, excluding track-and-field-themed games. This feels like a gap worth addressing in the gaming discourse. Also, I’d like to advocate for Mad Dash Racing as my personal benchmark for excellence in this category—it holds space as the best on-foot racing game in my book.
>>11514878
>>11514917kek, this.
>>11514818Never heard of this game ever. I can’t believe there are still PS2 games I’ve never heard of.
>>11514947Are you aware of all existing licensed pachislot games on PS2?
>>11514818This looks fake and from 2014.
>>11514948No because I don’t care to. I’m shocked to see a US released game I’ve never heard of this far in my life because PS2 was my peak childhood and I was autistic about video games. Read all the gaming magazines, read all the weekly store flyers.I probably have seen the game before but can’t recall it.
>>11514818>>11514967I thought the art looked a bit modern trash too, and that’s because it is. This technically is against board rules because it came out in 2008.In short:Not retro, and that’s why I never heard of it.
>>11514814>Are you racing against other people in those though?Sketchin' has you racing again other people. Its basically Road Rash but on rollerblades.Taz-Mania has you racing against the clock to chase down and eat birds.
>>11514261Why is putin in the background?
This is a great thread idea. I echo the sentiments of the anon who suggested future Sega racers should be more inspired by Sonic R rather than sticking them in karts
>>11514261Why is there Vladimir Putin?
>>11514991>Taz-Mania has you racing against the clock to chase down and eat birds. That doesn't count and you know it.I was thinking games more like Mad Dash, Sonic R, or Running Wild where it's a race against specific opponents like a kart racer would be, not something like Sketchin' where you just have nameless endless numbers of the same rivals trying to reach a set distance before you.
Sonic multiplayer count? You race against each other.
>>11514551I've posted about Running High here, it's fun but shallow. Great music.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bf5sWuxS8shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f68BcxNvQWshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Uwp8RaCofkGood attitude too, it'll put a smile on anyone's face for a little.
Micro Maniacs was a pretty good on-foot racer. Very Micro Machines-esque with a roster of interesting characters.
>>11514261Road Rash when you fall off your bike and run instead of driving.
>>11516189This is vaguely familiar. Weird idea to make a foot racing game as a spin off to micro machines. I wonder if they were planning on merchandising this at one point.
>>11516035Well, they ran the numbers…Anything with “kart” in the title sells and anything with “Sonic R” in the title is relegated to critical mediocrity.I agree though, there is a way to make a really good Sonic foot racing game, they just haven’t figured it out yet.I would forgo using the stick to turn, and use the bumpers and triggers instead (bumper, slight turn, trigger, hard turn) and make acceleration rhythm based. You keep a steady pulse with the action button that you can hit faster for a temporary speed boost at the cost of losing turn speed. The issue with Sonic R is that they just made the Sonic characters feel like cars driving on ice.
>>11516234>I agree though, there is a way to make a really good Sonic foot racing game, they just haven’t figured it out yet.Sonic R is great, you don't like it?
>>11516226The US release of the game was seemingly pushed by Fox Kids, so maybe was the case.
>>11516235No. It’s frustrating to play. I like the way it looks though and the soundtrack.
>>11516236Yup, I bet we missed out on a crappy one season cartoon based on this.
>>11516237Yeah? What about it frustrates you? I played it for the first time last year, it's easily my favourite 3D Sonic game.I saw you thought it was slippery. Jumping is how you pivot on a sharp turn, it really helps.
>>11516239There is a way to get good at any video game, Sonic R is just unrewarding to play. I don’t feel like a character pinned to the map with gravity, I feel like a a car with bald tires driving on a frozen lake. It just doesn’t feel good. Having a button to accelerate the character just like a car doesn’t feel good either. You can hold up but then your turning/accelerating sucks since you’re trading pressures on the dpad.I think a new Sonic R would benefit from modern physics. The characters need to have weight.
>>11516241>Sonic R is just unrewarding to play.I disagree. In what way is it unrewarding? The characters feel exactly like Sonic does in 2D. It's great.
>>11516248I don’t know how to explain to you any further on why I think it’s unrewarding to play. I have explained in detail why. It’s a floaty game. I feel more attached to the ground in Sonic Adventure than I do in Sonic R.
>>11516254>I have explained in detail whyYou really didn't give me any details as to why you think it's unrewarding. You just said it is.
>>11516241Are you remembering to turn with the shoulder buttons?
>>11516239>I played it for the first time last year, it's easily my favourite 3D Sonic game.Seriously? You like Sonic R more than Sonic Adventure 1, Adventure 2, Colors, or Generations?>>11516241>I don’t feel like a character pinned to the map with gravity, I feel like a a car with bald tires driving on a frozen lake. It just doesn’t feel good.Pretty much this. The characters all control extremely slippery. They are on FOOT (Well, most of them), why are they steering like a car? Sonic doesn't control like that in any other 3D game. Even in most kart racers I have played the cars aren't that slippery on the road.>>11516248>The characters feel exactly like Sonic does in 2D. It's great.Umm no, no they don't, they don't even feel like they do in the other 3D games, much less 2D. Not even close, not even in the same solar system. As for unrewarding, the game practically trolls you when you are trying to collect the chaos emeralds. Also there is no real single player mode and barely any courses, it feels unfinished with how little content there is. I 100%ed it in a day and went "That's it?"
>>11516180I feel like the big problem with running high is, iirc, it's single-player only. Pretty cool for that mode where all the racers get replaced with big babies that crawl really fast though.
>>11514691>horse racing games are on hoof games
>>11514261What's with the retarded monke background?
>>11514261The level of English on this board is so bad that OP couldn't just say "running".
>>11516735Running isn't the same thing as racing. >The level of English on this board is so badHuh huh...
>>11514976It's very telling too that the central character has a fucking turban on, screams third world.
>>11516741Yeah I'm sure "running racing" was that hard to figure out.>Huh huhYeah, it is bad.
>>11514261there was an snes game where there was a rabbit, a frog, and something else racing on foot. I remember the frog would run across water
>>11516745I’m OP. I knew it was awkwardly worded but I couldn’t think of the proper term to describe the genre I was thinking about.Since most games in this subgenre are takes on the kart racing formula, I wanted to specify racing “on foot” as opposed to a vehicle, so I hastily chose “on-foot racer” in context to “kart racer”.It would have been more correct for me to say “footracing games” or “footracers”.https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/footrace
>>11514976No, you're just not as knowledgeable about video games as you thought.
>>11514261Sonic R is fun. I don't care what others say.
>>11516745Absolutely no one says "running racing"—maybe in fucking Malaysia>>11516951Footracing would be the idiomatic phrasing yes
>>11516578Multiplayer would have really let the mechanics stretch. The ways you can attack other racers really elevates the game. The developers made some fascinating games culminating with the cult classic Blue Stinger. That's cool.https://www.mobygames.com/company/11657/system-sacom/
Pic related has on foot bug racing, though this is included among other racing types. I fear there's more hidden examples like this out there.
>>11517485Not retro, you’re breaking the board rules again.
