While pcsx2 really has improved as an emulator, especially on the input lag front it still is far from perfect anf honestly - it still has somewhat high input lag. So having a PS2 is viable. Modding is easy and cheap. Plenty of good and very good, often obscure and forgetten titles. The catch is that if you want to run one on a modern screen you need a component upscaler and most games are 480i, do you want that motion adaptiv deinterlacing. Thats a hassle so maybe emulation is more convenient and you get high resolution rendering.
If you really want to, go for it, a PS2 doesn't cost that much nowadays. You could use an emulator like PCSX2, but personally I've always found playing on real hardware much more enjoyable
