Had no idea games were just as expensive 20 years ago for even more primitive gameplay
>>

The difference is they were actually new games and not the same ones you played five to ten years ago with "Remastered/Definitive Edition" slapped on the cover. That and plenty of people did not buy these things until months or years later due to news moving so slowly compared to now
>>
>>11515765
To put it into perspective, DKCR is a fifteen year old game and they are still charging $59.99 for it on the Sw*tch
>>
And, the gap between DK Arcade and Donkey Kong Country (thirteen years) is actually shorter than the gap between DKCR and DKCR HD. Combine that with it being the third time the game has been released, vs. three brand new (good) DKC games in three years with he DKC trilogy with no waggle or gimmicks. That is what makes it so bad today.
>>
You like Sonic? They made FIVE outstanding Sonic games in four years on the Genesis, six if you count Spinball. Compare that to Sonic x Shadow Generations now which is the same exact game you played in 2011 for the same price, and this is two years after Frontiers, which took them five years after Forces. It's that bad now
>>
>>11515765
At least they actually had Toys R Us back then
>>
>>11515784
>>11515779
Damn this is grim
>>
>>11515765
Most people just rented everything. Didn't know anyone who actually owned more than like 10-12 games over a consoles lifespan
>>
They were more expensive, even without accounting for inflation. RPGs were often $70~90.
>>
Relatively they were more expensive yes, but they were also more affordable because all your daily needs (gas, bills, food, house etc) represented a lower % of your income which left you with more money to spend on leisure

also I'm not sorry your "20 years ago" and "primitive" low quality bait haven't worked

>Had no idea games were just as expensive 20 years ago for even more primitive gameplay
As someone who loves retro gaming, one thing I gotta say is that everyone who pushing "new bad, old good" has rose tinted goggles for 90's gaming, primarily because they don't have to fucking pay for it. Until the internet became big you had to buy magazines (or sneak a read) to get an opinion on what you are buying and if you chose wrong you could end up dropping $50-60 on Aero the fucking Acrobat.
Nowadays if I want to buy a new game I have major website reviews, YouTube reviewers, forums full of people talking about the game and if that is not enough I can open a longplay / no commentary walkthrough.
Pricing nowadays is also nice. Even most AAA games don't stay at $60 for long and most of the games I care about (2D) have reasonable base prices and good sales prices. Sonic Mania, Streets of Rage 4, Pocky and Rocky Reshrined, Ninja Warriors Once Again, Cotton Reboot / Fantasy, Megaman 11, Blazing Chrome, Cuphead, TMNT Shredders Revenge and too many Medroidvania's to count were all cheap on sale and I am waiting on Rita's Rewind to get that nice $15-20 sale.
I hate much of modern day gaming for the usual reasons but all the old games are free, all the new games I care about are cheap and once and a while the AAA studios actually drop something I give a fuck about so I like current day quite a bit.

As a yuro, I'm surprised the prices were similar for SNES and Genesis. Over here we had equivalent prices for the SNES ones, but Mega Drive games were usually around 10$ or so cheaper
>>
>>11515863
Yeah, this. I'd get a game for birthday's and Christmas and occasionally I could convince my mom to let me pick out something from a bargain bin or a Gameboy game but brand new SNES games were rare. I rented something weekly though.
>>
>>11515790
I'm not defending it by any means because I simply don't care about modern Sonic aside from Mania but isn't Shadow Generations a brand new game?
>>
>>11515765
>DKC is the cheapest game in there
>also the best one with the most content and best gameplay

how does that even work
>>
>>11516384
>but isn't Shadow Generations a brand new game?
Shadow X Generations is half a brand new game. They did the Super Mario 3D World / Bowsers Fury thing where they took old content and packaged in a shorter second game that while good, couldn't really stand on its own as a solo release.
>>
>>11516425
Ah I see
>>
>>11515765
>just as expensive
>>
>>11516395
Nintendo manufactured all the carts themselves so all first party games released by them would be cheaper.
>>
>>11516395
Sonic and Knuckles is the best game on that image.
>>
>>11516598
i mean if you want play the game game for the 4th time in a row sure
>>
>>11515765
Videogames are primarily an activity of the poor. Well off people have far more options of entertainment and don't need the false sense of progression and achievement videogames are designed to provide. The anomalous rich person with no life or the sad loser who spends way beyond his means to buy virtual items in a videogame. Games have stayed the same price because that's what the market can accept but now the total cost is spread across dlc and microtransactions like a payday loan's interest payments
>>
>>11516598
>$59.99 for just the back half the of game.
grim
>>
>>11515765
Better than any open world modern garbage, zoomie
>>
cartridges were expensive, yeah.
>>
>>11515765
>Had no idea games were just as expensive 20 years
try 30 years ago

1994 was 31 years ago anon, not 20.
>>
>>11515765
>>11515779
With digital sales games are actually cheaper than ever. In the past games rarely went below half price while they were current gene. When you could get a game for below half price it was because it was old and thus the real issue is finding it. Yeah I did get 6 n64 games and the system for 70 bucks though. Digital stores never run out.
>>
You have to factor in the banana bucks.

God I love not paying for games nowadays.
>>
>>11515779
And we HAD, MORE, MONEY!!!

Also Rentals and 2ns Hand Market wasnt perverted by speculating millenials.
>>
>>11515765
4th gen games were a fucking daylight robbery anon, Adjsut those ludicrous prices for inflation as well, paying $60 for a game in 1993 is like paying $150 for a game today lmao.
>>
>>11515863
I'm 37-years-old and this is accurate. Nobody really owned over a dozen games, especially given the nature of renting. Plus, when a new console came out, some families/YMCAs etc. would outright give away their old console and games to literally anyone who wanted it. I genuinely own nearly a dozen SNES games because my church's didn't use it anymore.
>>
>>11515765
This is where PS1 was based.
$20 Greatest Hits games
>>
>>11517307
Meanwhile snes and n64 Players choice games were 42 bucks. Whoopdie.
>>
>>11515765
>Ys "R" Us
>no Ys games
>>
>>11516721
Damn I feel old
>>
>>11517309
Nintendo still has the exact same fucking pricing scheme as their games nowadays. Mario Kart 8 is like a decade old! It should be 20 bucks max!
>>11517324
For what it's worth, the TRU I went to growing up was the only place I ever remember seeing TurboGrafx stuff for sale...they even had a demo kiosk!
>>
>>11515765
N64 games were much more expensive than their better-performing competition in the Playstation.
>>
>>11517194
You mean your mum lol.
