My first ever game was Sonic 2, and I owned a DC with SA1 and later SA2 (i even bought Sonic Shuffle...) but Heroes was such a major turn off that I quit the franchise altogether and didn't play another new game until Generations.It felt lame, too bright and kiddy, and too arcade-y i guess. SA2 already abandoned the open-world exploration of SA1, and Heroes abandoned the semi-serious tone and realistic Earth-like setting that I assumed would be the standard going forward.It was like Sonic made a huge leap into 3D gaming only to then retreat back to simplistic gameplay and cartoony story and characters.

In the wake of GTA3, after SA1 and 2 both had darker and more mature storylines, it legitimately felt like Heroes was the "saturday morning cartoon" version of Sonic.I felt embarrassed to be playing a game so clearly designed for children younger than me, almost like I had been tricked. I then discovered Sonic X and I never really considered myself a Sonic fan afterwards.

Without knowing any of the proper jargon, I can tell you the problem with this era of Sonic is nothing ever feels like it has the appropriate weight. Sonic is supposed to be fast, but is he supposed to feel like a paper bag blowing in the wind? Sonic should be like a a weighted ball, hurtling down a slope.
