I'm looking into playing an old Final Fantasy on emulator. I've got:
FF III on DS
FF IV on SNES, GBA, DS (also a translated jp ver fsr)
FF V on GBA
FF VI on SNES, GBA
FF Tactics Advance
FF Tactics A2
Which of these should I start with? The only Final Fantasy experience I have is playing the first one on the phone years ago, but I'm fine with playing a hard one. Also how much of a difference is there between versions?

FF3 on PSP is better than FF3 on DS because its the same game but with the mognet stuff adapted for offline
FF4 on SNES needs to be translated because "FF2" is absolute dog shit even if it has sovl
the rest of your choices are fine
and I'd personally start in order even if it doesnt matter
when you get tired or burnt out, switch to tactics and also add the ps1/psp final fantasy tactics to your list

FF3 PSP is close to strictly better than FF3 DS, as >>11517265 mentioned.
FF4 I would go with DS or SFam. It really comes down to taste. DS adds in a lot of extra story (although it's still a fairly story-light RPG even after that) and gameplay mechanics and significantly increases the difficulty. If you want a pure experience of course go with SFam, but if the low-poly aesthetic speaks to you or you prefer your RPGs with extra complexity and difficulty, DS is also a fine choice.
A2 is an indirect sequel to both FFTA and FF12 so it's a bit of a questionable decision to do early. It's also one of the longest Final Fantasy games. Definitely at least try FFTA first, but A2 is a fairly different experience so even if you don't like FFTA at all you may love A2.

I'd personally recommend starting with FF4 because it's a good introduction to the series's mechanics. The characters' abilities are much more set in stone than in titles with job-switching like FF5 or FFTA, which is a good thing for a beginner because it pushes you to learn how to use each class instead of settling into early habits.
In general though, anything is good. You can decide the order you'll play Final Fantasy games in with a dartboard and have a fun experience regardless. Even playing direct sequels like X-2 out of order isn't that bad. Feel free to choose what game to play based on which one you think has the cutest girls or any other arbitrary reason you like. That's how I got into the series and I became a massive fan!

Thanks, I'm gonna check out FF IV then since I don't have a PSP ROM

I don't really know anything about any of these games desu, I've tried keeping myself spoiler-free, though idk how much that matters if the story's pretty light.
Is there any merit to playing the GBA versions? Presumably the graphics and sound are worse but I think they added extra content. Is that worth it?

>GBA versions
My understanding is that the main appeal is the alternative translations, but I'm literate in Japanese so I don't know very much about that at all.
Some versions of FF4 GBA are supposed to have really bad bugs, so definitely look into that before you play that version.
FF5 GBA also has bugs and is supposed to be slower in general.
FF6 GBA is censored and I would recommend avoiding it.
All SNES to GBA ports (not just Final Fantasy games) have significantly lower sound quality, and music is a very important aspect of Final Fantasy.

In short, I wouldn't really go with any of them for a first playthrough unless you strongly preferred the translation.
If you like these games you'll end up playing them bunches of times, so you can save all the bonus content to make your second playthrough more special.
Playing the SNES/SFam versions and having something close to an original experience is always a safe choice for a first playthrough.

>Spoilers
I wish you good luck. I hate spoilers myself and I hate it when people spoil me.
I'd like to warn/inform you though that Square basically didn't believe in avoiding spoilers. They constantly revealed the major twists and endings of their games in their television commercials and on the front covers of their strategy guides.
And Final Fantasy is so popular that a lot of the major spoilers are well known to people who don't even play the games. It's a kind of Rosebud situation.
If you really want to avoid spoilers you'll want to go radio dark. Definitely don't go into any threads about Final Fantasy on /vr/, even on unrelated titles. People constantly spoil the games here and past the OP all bets are off.

If you do get spoiled though, don't take it too hard.
Because Square doesn't really believe in avoiding spoilers the games are written to still be good even if you know the twists in advance. Being spoiled won't ruin the experience.
I got spoiled on basically everything and I still love the games.

Thanks, I'll go with the snes version then
Lol didn't know that about square and spoilers tho. Not really sure why you'd want to undermine your own story like that. Maybe they didn't respect games as a storytelling medium yet, or at least the marketing team didn't

I'm curious; was "that moment" from FFVII spoiled by ads/promos at all? It's funny to be hush-hush about THAT scene of all things on /vr/, but for OPs sake I will be
>>
>>11517265
>"FF2" is absolute dog shit even if it has sovl
stupid exaggeration, but yeah there's not much reason to play that version anymore
>>
>>11517794
If it's the one I'm thinking, I actually do know that one unfortunately, if only because it's so famous. I know very little else about FF VII though, besides the characters. I would tend to doubt Square spoiled that though, since at that point they were making AAA games

QRD on why the JP version is better? Is it just a more faithful translation or are there other major differences?
