Does not sound like that on real hardware. The fart thing is a myth created by bad emulation and terrible YouTube compression. FM waveforms are extreamly unnatural and lossy audio codes do not handle them well, resulting in terrible sound, especially, with the horrifically terrible YouTube compression.

He means only sine wave operators. This is normal for FM synths of the era. The DX7 is the same, although with 6 operators instead of 4.
