I've never played many fighting games, but I really like the graphics of some of the 3D PS1 fighting games. I just tried played Tekken 1 arcade mode (default settings) as Kazuya. I basically just tried to use high kick after blocking/dodging attacks. Does anyone have any tips for getting better? The computer is so aggressive sometimes. I played Bloody Roar before this and I felt like I was kind of better at that game, using different types of moves and stuff.

I read on a wiki that Heihachi dropped Kazuya off a cliff when he was younger to test his strength, which gives some much needed context to Kazuya's ending. But where do people get this info? It's not in the manual or any of the endings. And then I haven't played Tekken 2 yet, but the manual makes it out like Kazuya is a bad guy now and Heihachi is a good guy?

That cliff edge doesn't look very strong at all and could collapse at any moment.
Heihachi is a foolish man.

no idea. part of the reason why i loved tekken was its non-sensical endings. id rather not know wtf was going on.

Well, anon. Sit down and learn.
When Arcade games came out, they had those things called "flyers", which were sort of advertisements that the arcades either gave to regulars or left nearby so anyone could take a look at them. When a business bought an arcade board, the flyers usually came in the kit, along with stickers with character moves. Here, look at the image. Excuse the shitty watermark.

You can look up "arcade flyer <game" to find various flyers from that era.

That's Heihachi being thrown off there, by Kazuya.
Heihachi throws Kazuya into a volcano.

Here's a Tekken 3 flyer.

Aside from that, developers just released that kind of info to magazines. Although in the case of japanese developers, most of it was usually wrong because it didn't come directly from the developers themselves, but from some guy in Japan that copied an article from a japanese magazine. Some glaring mistakes I remember from that era were:
- Chris (KOF) was a girl
- Kazuya in Tekken 4 was a clone
- Sharon (SFEX2) was Blair's (SFEX1) sister

>Heihachi and Kazuya lock horns for the final time
>lock horns for the final time
>final time
I seriously hope someone sued Namco for this false advertising.

My guess is that they didn't want to reveal that character is Jin and not Kazuya (although they look quite different). It's not uncommon of advertising material to have wildly different designs from the final game.

For example, take this Dead or Alive flyer. None of those made it into the game, except for Jann Lee, and he had different hair color.

I did not know that. I always thought arcade flyers were just targeted at operators to promote new games.

I didn't know any of that when I played Tekken 1+2. I just thought the Kazuya cliff drop was an extra fuck you to Heihachi, and the volcano ending in T2 was Heihachi one-upping him.
I only found out the cliff backstory from the animated movie.

Unless it's based on some japanese legend they just ripped off Fist of the North Star as per usual.

>how do I get better
Block more. There is about a 99% chance you aren't blocking enough. Many attacks in Tekken are not safe if blocked, which means you have time to get a guaranteed hit after blocking them. I'm sure you see where this is going
Also learn how highs/mids/lows work in relation to blocking (ie the fact that you can low a standing opponent or mid a crouching one, even if they are blocking)
Tekken "lore" is fun memes, but 75% of it isn't canon/is clearly asspulled to have enough endings. It's still a good time but you have to piece together what the fuck is going on from various endings/side content/etc
