Anons who pretend to speak Japanese, can you tell me what the name Chamoro (チャモロ) is meant to mean? It doesn't sound like a common Japanese name. His town is named after Ghent, which is a popular tourist location in Belgium because of its many historical churches, he is a priest/monk, in the remake he is named Nevan which is Irish (or something) for "saint", but "Chamoro" to the best of my knowledge is the name of some random island people in Guam. What's the connection between the chamoro people, Ghent, and the priesthood?

Konnichiwa!

I'd be happy to translate for you. I've been living in Japan for 9 years and have a good handle on the subtleties of the language.

Chamoro

チャ - Original poster's
モロ - Sexual preference for men

isnt Cha to the japanese a kind of stereotypical chinese-ish syllable noise? it would make sense with his clothing design..

I don't know the game so I maybe there's a pattern to the names, but in Spanish, chamorro means "one with a shaved head".
In Japan, Buddhist priests proverbially shave their head, so that could be the reason.
Is the character bald under the hat?
As for Ghent I don't know, having historical churches is not very unique for an old European city.

There is no artwork or spritework without the hat, but he has no hair creeping underneath his hat in any artwork, including this official drawing where he is at an angle where we should be able to see his hair, so the shaved theory seems plausible. Apparently the Spanish word is based off the chamorro people as well, so these people may have a custom of shaving their heads.

The names don't follow an obvious theme, but there are three names that were changed during localization, and the names that they were given in the localization do have a meaning. It is my personal theory that the three names that were changed were changed because Yuji Horii (who is the one who requested the name change according to the localizers, to the dismay of the localization haters) felt that he wanted these character's names to still have a meaning in English.

Of the three, at least one is confirmed to be meaningful in the original. Barbara -> Ashlynn. Barbara means "foreigner", related to "barbarian", and Barbara is found as an amnesiac wanderer from a different world. "Ashlynn" is a pun on the fact that her homeland burned down in a fire.

Chamoro -> Nevan appears to be a religious reference in both versions. I'm about 70% sure this was intended.

The mystery is Hassan -> Carver. Carver is an obvious pun on the fact that he grew up in a carpenter family. Hassan means "beautiful, handsome" in the sandnigger language. While he is shown as an unusually fashionable hunk character, it does seem like a strange nane to fixate on and the meaning probably flew over most Japanese people. His skin color was slightly tanner in the original game and artwork, so his name may have been picked to give his character an Arab flavor, but he was made white in the remake and in its associated artwork.

Milayou -> Milly is technically also a name change, but this is to me more of an anglicization than an outright change.
