there were legitimate technical reasons why it wasn't possible and even the Genesis needed an extra add-on to play Master System games but the average tech illiterate boomer parent in '92 knew nothing of that, they just thought they were being grifte

As a kid staying from school I did see an n64 report on nbc of the N64 launch reported with the utmost seriousness with a next generation starts now kind of attitude.

This is along the lines but not the same.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpOWhgO-oFI

As far as I know ps2 was the last console they bothered having on the mainstream news, will they even bother to report the Switch launch, they probably won't even report anything if Shingeru Miyamoto dies.

I also remember some idiotic news report on Australian TV basically saying sonic the hedgehog on master system causes epilepsy, them video games companies got to do something they victims said. So for the next few years many games would have a blue piece of paper saying flashing light might cause issues, I think even gameboy games up to 1997 did it but I never saw an ps1 games with it.

>>11663139
I think sound was hard to simulate and mappers upto mm3 could probably be made to work with a few changes but still it would be a massive headache for support even if only 50 games didn't work. Well Sega did it and they were a much smaller company so not it its some impossible task.

>"Some parents are refusing to be taken in"
>"How people market things to make you spend more money"

Gotta love how these idiots who acted like the only reason the SNES was made was to double-dip on games that definitely could have existed on the NES and that they were too smart to fall for it. I remember reading interviews where people basically said exactly that, that all the SNES games could have been made on the NES if they wanted to but they wanted to "scam" people by making them buy another console.

The only point they had was in the "you can't mix'n'match" and even that only was half right, in that the SNES was not backwards compatible, but they are also idiots for complaining about the NES not being forwards compatible. Imagine them acting that way with computers "Why can't Doom run on my Commodore64? Do you have any idea how much I paid for this in 1982? This is just a scam! A computer is a computer!"

>even the Genesis needed an extra add-on to play Master System

The Genesis/ MD has all of the hardware needed internally to run Master System games. It even uses the same 9-pin controller ports, so you could plug master system controllers into the Genesis /MD. The Power Base converter added a SMS cartridge slot and card slot . Back then the Power Base Converter was sold at roughly $20.00 and Sega would even give it away for free in some promo deals. But considering the low sales numbers of the Sega Master System in the North American market, Sega only put the Power Base Converter out on the marketplace long enough to just please the Master System user base. There were a lot of complaints about the SNES not being backwards compatible, because parents didn't want to get rid of all of their old 'tapes' that they invested hundreds of dollars in and wanted them to be playable on the newest Nintendo hardware. To be honest, the WDC 65C816 derivative in the SNES could run 6502 code. Maybe they could have found a way to add a NES mode in the SNES PPU, but the audio would have been a problem. Maybe they could have released an adaptor like Sega for older SNES games?

afaik the NES's dual bus setup was the biggest obstacle to why backward compatibility wasn't possibe

You can't know that. While for sure they harassed him on a criminal level and I am very suspicious of the type of people who did it/do it, saying it's why he went how he did is unknown. Lots of people have gone down the same route without facing any internet stuff.

You're kind of right... many because cable subscription service TV was losing viewership to ever growing popularity of the video game market. These days cable TV is on its last legs being propped up by an aging baby boomer generation.

Always feel bad for that guy. I did the surface level "Oh heh. What a dumb comic and strange kid" and moved on. The psychopaths who made it their life mission to engage and destroy are far worse then Chris chan.

Ironically I've noticed the same people who destroyed Chris are some of the biggest butthurt austistic faggots on the internet as well. Just better at not spilling it all out online

It didn't help but he was doomed because of his shit parents
>>
>>11666595
Those hopes were quickly shut down when they were told that such a tournament would require parity in equipment, something not feasible without a sponsor willing to bring machines.
Attendees had to bring their own computers, and there was no standard to follow, if it boots and it can play, you can join in.
A journo covering the event was specially shocked by this computer.

Seems utterly bizarre, but I can sort of understand their mindset given that Atari 2600 was on the market for so fucking long and that's what most of these boomers knew. So the concept of having to buy a totally new game system that is incompatible with the previous one, is a foreign concept to them.

Nice of you to act like people would be computer/technology savvy in an era where people still carried around address books and taped Seinfeld on VCR.

They weren't saying that stuff because they're stupid, they're just uninformed, because that sort of knowledge just wasn't common back then. Videogames have been around now for just about 40-50 years, back then it was barely 10, AND it was a child/nerd/social outcast niche. No self-respecting working adult would come home and think to himself "boy, I sure can't wait for the next generation of videogame consoles with better graphics and sound". They just saw it as their kid's toy they rented a game for every couple of weekends.
>>
>>11665137
>france doc, german dub and english subs
Why?
>>
>>11672353
The boomer early gen x equivalent would be singles records, there are so many similarities. It was a new technology that their parents sort of dismissed, they anticipated the newest releases, material just 2 years old was considered outdated and then it became so commonplace and cheap that the next generation sort of took it for granted like how zoomers expect at least a couple of the monthly epic free games to be a AAA game from 2 years ago.
