Is the Xstation worth it? Do they end up being faulty or are they pretty reliant? What about modded PS2s?
>>11681465SuperStation is neat
>>11681465Both work great. I had an XStation for years now and its been a really useful device. Just make sure you get a good SD card, cheap ones will stutter on FMVs.
>>11681465That soldering job is the hardest fuckig mod I have ever seen. The fact that they still haven't soft modded the PSX is sad. This is the one reason I refuse to buy one though I see these all the time for sale on FB Marketplace in my area.Tempted but I already have a MisterPi that can do all of these games plus have amazing features on top of it.
>>11681527It's not a hard thing to solder at all. You have a QSB, you fill in the vias, run a wire, then lift a few legs (or cut them, who cares?) plug it in and you're good.
PS2's aren't a good choice for PS1 back compat. Depending on your PS2 model, back compat is either partially or entirely emulated. All PS2 models emulate the PS1 GPU and the accuracy isn't very good. Later Slim models lack the PS1 CPU and have to emulate that as well.
>>11681465They’re amazing. The installed mine back in 2021 and it’s still going strong.
>>11681532Also, modding doesn't help much for a PS2.Mechapwn lets you play PS1 burns, but if you have a PAL Phat then just forget about mechapwn.POPStarter is an emulator available on all PS2 models. The compatibility is very shaky but is improving thanks to hugopocked. In some cases POPStarter is more accurate than the partial emulation. Still, this is 100% emulation and far from perfect.Later Slims with the DECKARD chip can use DKWDRV to play defragmented (very important) PS1 games off a USB, but there is no support for Redbook audio nor disc-swapping. This is 100% emulation and far from perfect. The partial emulation on earlier PS2 models will NEVER have USB/HDD/et cetera support because the PS1 CPU used on earlier models is the I/O controller; it simply cannot work the USB ports and play PS1 games at the same time.
>>11681527They have soft modded psx though?
>>11681571>The partial emulation on earlier PS2 models will NEVER have USB/HDD/et cetera support because the PS1 CPU used on earlier models is the I/O controller; it simply cannot work the USB ports and play PS1 games at the same time.oh so that's why there is no ps1 iso's support on HDD in OPL. I was always wondering about that. Good to know
>>11681527>The fact that they still haven't soft modded the PSX is sad.Look up Tonyhax and FreePSXBoot.
>>11681465I have one and it works perfectly, pairs well with memcard pro too
>>11681571>Mechapwn lets you play PS1 burns, but if you have a PAL Phat then just forget about mechapwn.laughs in PS1VModeNeg
>>11683254Yeah, hence just forget about it. At that point, what IS the point?
Does the modded ps2 work the same way where you just download the games onto an SD card and play it like that?
>>11683637There's nothing like MX4SIO for PS1 because the read speed of the PS1 memory card slots is in the kilobytes per second.MX4SIO is also pretty bad on DECKARD Slims because they have a much lower MC read speed than older models; it's not much faster than USB, which is admittedly faster on DECKARDs but still poor.
>>11681518Literally this, there's also weird quirks where streaming audio will eventually cut out with specific sd cards(it doesn't even necessarily have to be a bad brand). I switched to a SanDisk high endurance and it resolved all of my issues.
>>11683257>FMCB>Mechapwn>Put a single .elf file on memory card (PS1VMN)>Patch .iso to read NTSC as PALif the above is too complex for you then consider going to /v/
>>11684526>SanDisk high enduranceThanks for the tip, haven't used my XStation lately but I remember there being some audio issues and stuttering after playing for a while.I had problems with my Saturn's Fenrir too and I thought I had shitty SD cards, BUT after installing a simple mounting bracket so the ODE stays in place completely solved every issue.
>>11684871Do you have card extenders in them?
>>11681465how accurate is Xebra and Duckstation? I mean, which one makes the games look the most like the hardware and what are they missing in comparison.
>>11681465>Is the Xstation worth it?That really depends on you. Do you want to play on authentic hardware or are you ok with software emulation or FPGAs instead? And are you ok with no longer being able to use your disks on the system you install it on? Do you have a compatible model?> Do they end up being faulty or are they pretty reliant? They're very reliable and have pretty much perfect compatibility, they are also compatible with other mods like the HDMI one. It's only real drawback, other than the price and needing soldering skills, is that you have to remove your optical drive and that it's only compatible with a small set of PS1 models.>What about modded PS2s?PS2s are significantly less compatible/accurate playing PS1 games than even software emulators these days, and that's off playing from disks, it's even more problematic trying to use disk images. Personally, I would not use a PS2 to play PS1 games, I would rather use software emulators at that point if you can't use a real PS1 or a FPGA device.
>>11681527>The fact that they still haven't soft modded the PSX is sad. They have, unless you are talking about a permanent softmod which is impossible because the PS1 contains no type of rewritable storage, you can't permanently softmod it any more than you can permanently softmod a NES.But yes, I am just using my MisterPi from now on too even though I have a PS1 with both a modchip and PSIO installed. Maybe if I can HDMI-mod it and get a Memcard Pro 2 for it I will use it some more over my MiSTer.>>11684526>I switched to a SanDisk high endurance and it resolved all of my issues.I assume this has to do with the internal access speeds of the SD card. I remember this being a thing in the early days of NintendoDS flashcarts, some games (Portrait of Ruin when using fast travel was a big example) could crash even if your MicroSD card was "fast", eventually it was found that the card needed to have fast internal access of random data or something like that, there was a homebrew app to test it, I recall Transcend cards at the time generally being good for that, though eventually firmware updates fixed it. Wonder if that's the same thing here, I assume the card scoring high in CrystalDiskMark's 4k random access tests likely will help with this.
>>11685474No.
>>11681527>That soldering job is the hardest fuckig mod I have ever seenHardly the hardest. Lifting pads can be tricky if you're not careful, but even if you break them you can still use the XStation.
Has anyone tried out the chink clones of XStation and Fenrir?
>>11681571>The compatibility is very shaky but is improving thanks to hugopockedHow do you use his fixes? I found his github with all of them in a zip file. Do you just apply them with deltapatcher over the rom?
>>11687729You put the patches (bin files IIRC) in the game's VMC folder. The VMC folder should be named the same as the VCD, and be located in the POPS folder on the root of your drive. The publicly available patches are outdated though, but if you tip hugopocked a few bucks he'll send you a folder with patches for 300+ games.
>>11687692i might buy them both and post my experience here, i have a saturn, but sadly I have yet to get an xstation compatible ps1
>>11681527The fact that they HAVE softmodded this system with no internal storage even is pretty damn unbelievable if you ask me.
>>11687745Interesting, thanks
>>11688101>>11687745VMC folders are automatically created anyway the first time you run the game anyway
>>11681465Totally worth it. Mod isn't that hard to install either. Just look up some good technique if you're not confident. The pin lifting is the hardest part, but as long as you intend to always use the Xstation then it doesn't matter if you break the legs.
how much is it's clone ?
