Am I crazy for thinking that at its most intense RE4 is scarier than the original trilogy? Ofc overall it's less scary since it's more action focused, but when it's actually focused on horror it's nerve wrecking.
it's definitely good the 2nd playthrough
>>11682465>Am I crazy for thinking that at its most intense RE4 is scarier than the original trilogy?Nah, you're just an RE4babby or zoomer who bought into the GOTYAY meme perpetuated by RE4babbies.
>>11682465Not at all. You're right. RE1-3 aren't scary past maybe their first 10 minutes. The stakes in RE4 just seem so much higher and all the bullshit you get thrown into seems insurmountable and it maintains that horror the whole game.
>>11682465RE4 is unironically more of a survival horror game than RE1/3. The original games are glorified point and click adventure titles, while RE4 places priority on strategies other than "run past zombie" and encouraging both self-preservation (by tracking your number of deaths, which IIRC the older games didn't, only your number of saves), and protecting Ashley. Try to beat RE4 on professional with 0 deaths on 1 save and tell me you don't feel like you're legitimately trying to survive the horrors.
>>11682465the only thing that makes me go "FUCK" is hearing nemesis sprint offscreen
>>11682465the original trilogy looks too goofy to take seriously. the enemy models and their animations can't evoke horror the same way a regenerator or garrador can
resident evil 4a horse with no name
>>11682628
>>11682652
>>11682654It looks so good...
RE4 scarier than the original trilogy sure. but REmake makes RE4 look like a stupid corny action game in comparison. REmake has some legit fucking scary moments. Also, a lot of the "horror" of classic RE has to do with the fact that dying has bigger consequences than an action game. RE4 when you die you just go back to the last checkpoint with no worries, so it by default is less of a "survival horror" than classic RE.
>>11682694>REmake has some legit fucking scary moments. It's the same exact cheesy shit as the original game with a fresh coat of paint.
>>11682706Crimson heads and zombies being able to go through doors are scarier than anything in 4 by miles. If you think 4 is scary im sorry but you're a pussy lmao
>>11682536>while RE4 places priority on strategies other than "run past zombie"by constantly trapping you in combat arenas where you're expected to kill everything without exception. are you braindead? you obviously don't have a fucking clue what 'survival horror' means. by your logic any moderately challenging action game is """survival horror""".>guys DOOM is survival horror I swear>guys if you play the game on hard mode and try to get a perfect deathless run, it's REALLY scary>this totally doesn't apply to every single other videogame ever made though, just RE4
>>11682741>by constantly trapping you in combat arenas where you're expected to kill everything without exception.not him but you'd be very surprised how many encounters you can run straight past I watched my friend stream it not long ago and he ran past I'd say 60% if not more of them. once you're through the door they can't do fuck all. actually made me think less of the game
>>11682759numb nut, the horror stems from going in without a clue as to how much running away you can get away with. you're meant to enter every new room and critically assess whether this is a situation to fight, or a situation to flee.watching your gamer pro friends yolo zip past all the zombies because he already knows the rules of the game, and deciding the game is shit because of that, is rather weak. you let another more skilled player expose the magic, and you let that shitty impression color your preachings of the game.i say this as an re4 fan. i love re4 because re4 is the sickest action game of all time. the older trilogy can lick my nuts because quite frankly, it was boring and stale and needed a new coat of paint with re4. the only problem was milking into further with re5 (still a good co-op game) and then re6, where it truly went to shit.capcom just milks a formula that seems to work. re1 was a hit, milk it for 3 games. re4 was a hit, milk it for 3 games. re7 was a hit, milk it for 4 games and counting. it's nothing new.
>>11682741Survival Horror is any game with the Survival Horror label on the box, simple as.
>>11682465I thought RE4 prison was pretty tense and scary, don't know why people always forget about that chapter
>>11682768it was his first time playing the game, he's just an autistic prick and was most likely doing it to piss me off. only a handful of times when he was with Ashley or the game would outright lock you in a room would it not work
>>11682803ohh. well i have to admit, i thought you were talking about a friend streaming old RE games, running past enemies. not RE4.i'll go sit in the dunce corner since i don't wanna think about how stupid i am.
absolutely terrifying
>>11682654When I first saw Resident Evil remake I thought it was rendered in real time. It's honestly had to believe it's made out of prerendered background.
>>11682465None of the RE games are even slightly scaryIf they didn't coin the term "survivor horror" I don't think people would even think of them as horror games anymore, just some tank control adventure games.
This is a cool discussion and allBut what if I suffer from an unfortunate case of pussyassness where EVERY resident evil game is 2scary4me to play? What about that?
>>11682779So can we finally agree that parasite eve isn't a horror game?
>>11683056Survival horror games are not horror games though
>>11683056Yeah, it's a Cinematic RPG. I don't think PE2 even rated it's own special snowflake genre label. Japanese devs love those things.Resident Evil games to this day are all labeled as Survival HorrorDino Crisis 1 was Panic HorrorSilent Hill and Clock Tower games are, IIRC, Horror AdventureMetal Gear Solid is Tactical Espionage Action
Classic RE games have a sinister ambiance about them, but RE4 has more overt horror elements with some legitimately unnerving situations. The first time I played this game at release, I was about 13 years old, and the sound of the regenerator was terrifying to me. Even now at 33, with probably 20+ clears of the game under my belt, I still feel a little unsettled at times. This is coming from somebody who used to do retarded shit in my youth like sneak into abandoned houses at night. I'm not an easy fright, but something about RE4 still spooks me. Amazing game.
I think nemesis goes toe to toe with most of re4's scenarios, also the crimson heads if you're allowed to bring that up but otherwise I would agree. as much as is said about ambiance the thing that really is going to scare you is the intensity of an encounter with a predator.
>>11682465RE games have never been scary. Fatal Frame and Forbidden Siren make RE's "horror" look like a joke.
>>11682465I think it is more scary in some regards, less so in others.I feel like RE4 is the most panic-inducing game. Things like the cage fight with the clawed guy, and a regenerator closing in on you is more panic-inducing than many of the old games, maybe save for some moments with Hunters in RE1 or with Nemesis in RE3.I feel like the older games, particularly RE1 though, have a scarier atmosphere, that feeling of not knowing whats around the corner and having that fear of opening a door to a new room. This is especially true the first time you play and don't know where items are and might be low on ink ribbons, ammo or healing items. I also think the music and general design of the mansion is top notch for creating a spooky and scary atmosphere moreso than RE4.
>>11682652>Ultimate life formI didnt know that shadow the hedgehog was in this game
What is up with so many resident evil 4 threads?
>>11682465RE4 wasn't scary at all for a number of reasons.>You were a 30-something year old dude sporting an ugly brown coat and shooting Spanish speaking villagers.>The fact that the enemies talk, shows they're not zombies, just infected humans that mutate. >The angry villagers attack you with weapons, rather than trying to eat you alive.>The whole game is about a cult and there's an odd midget character who is very out of place, wearing a 1700's outfit. Which tells me this game wasn't meant to take place in modern day, it was going to be a different game without RE characters.>The original RE games are scarier, including the remakes. Especially when you have Mr X or Nemesis coming after you.>RE4 focuses on action more than scare tactics. You want scary? Play Silent Hill 1 alone in the dark.
>>11682694>>11682628>>11682536>>11682528Bot replies.
None of them are scary. Video games aren't scary. They're all good games in different ways, though
>>11682654Cheater controls that didn't come with the game until the hd re-release. You unironically didn't beat the game. This webm is probably also played with the easy mode that also wasn't originally in the game
>>11683379>RE4 isn't scary because you wear a coatuhh
>>11683687>Bot repliesHow so, anon?
>>11684213Basically, a human person won't say that nonsense. Literally no one thinks that RE4 is scarier, or that earlier REs look goofy and I talk a lot to both zoomers and boomers in real life.
bella sisters make me shit my pants, so re4 is scary
>>11683865>that's right, I am not afraid of children's toys...>Now, where shall I claim my brownie points?
>>11684238>and I talk a lot to both zoomers and boomers in real life. Why would you do that? Are you a normie?
>>11684319Half a normie.
I will never understand people enjoying Resident Evil games, static world with just a few interactable objects, you move like a tank, jump scares with monsters popping out, shitty wooden shooting/movements, rinse and repeat. They are absolutely braindead gameplay-wise
Dead space 2 is better
RE games were never even supposed to be scary, they were just really gory. People played them when they're 5 years old and still scared of the fucking dark or being alone in a Walmart and act like that was the normal experience. The games have a few jump scares and nothing else really approaching horror unless you are quite literally a giant pussy fag
>>11685926re4 is incredibly deep gameplay wise what are you talking about the controls scheme fits with the stop and shoot gameplay. makes you think. you are a contrarian
>>11682536>RE4 is unironically more of a survival horror game than RE1/3. The original games are glorified point and click adventure titlesThat's what a survival horror game is though. RE1 coined the term. It doesn't refer to the difficulty of the game.
>>11685926Classic has really good gameplay, even more so with level design vs controlsAnd RE4 is still a better action game than its direct imitators such as Dead Space. Then again>Why isn't this like Terraria/Minecraft?!Isn't a particularly valid stance to critique a gameplay focused game.
>>11685926Exploring a spooky mansion or city is fun
