The PS1 Slim might be one of my favorite console designs of all time, right next to the PS2 slim

PS1 was so good I didn't even bother getting a PS2 until 2005. I knew even back in 2000 as a teenager that it wasn't as interesting as the PS1.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEEEEEEEEE

It needed Sonic, and more of its best games to be released overseas. But no, they thought the gay clown game could save it.

I like the original PlayStation mostly for its 2D arcade library. Shoot em ups and fighting games were very well represented by beat em ups and run and guns got the shaft hard, even worse, what little it did get often wasn't even brough over like Metal Slug, Captain Commando, Warriors of Fate, Panzer Bandit and Gunners Heaven (Europe only). Same with Saturn games like the D&D collection and Guardian Heroes. Picrel are some great late generation arcade games that would have been amazing to get at home on PS1 or Saturn.

>they thought Nights could save it
I find that hard to believe. Nights is a lot of fun, but there's not much to it, it's really short. It can't compete with Mario or Crash.

Right, I should probably mention some of the 2D games they actually have.

Raiden Project is one of my favorites. In the Hunt is amazing. Metal Slug X is a good port. Donpachi and Dodonpachi. Gunbird. Captain Commando is a good beat em up, 3 and 4 player modes too. Bust a Move is always fun. Rayman of course, beautiful game. Alundra is good. Gunbird which was localized as Mobile Light Force and given a retarded Charlies Angels looking cover. Rapid Reload (Gunners Heaven) is a nice run and gun. Nekketsu Oyako is an okay beat em up, like that it got translated. Wolf Fang from Data East is great, another I'd like to see the dialog get translated, if only they brought Night Slashers and Wizard Fire with it. Looking forward to trying Little Ralph too. Bunch of great Konami double packs for Gardius, Parodius and Twinbee, would have killed for a TMNT arcade double pack though, with 4 players and all the voice clips. Bunch of beautiful sprite art RPG's, Legend of Mana is the most beautiful and Alundra is fun. Of course Mega Man and Castlevania both have great games, shame they fucked over Contra with... whatever the hell those games were supposed to be.

Anyone got any more good PS1 recommendations? I think I'll make an image collage for 2D PS1 games later.

They're cute but functionally the CD door flying open instead of having the extra engineering to slow it down and the piece of crap power and eject buttons are pretty ass. The memory cards clicking in is also pretty stupid when the console doesn't weigh anything so now you have to hold it down or else it just slides around, and one of my aftermarket cards gets stuck in there like a vice grip.

Thank you.

I never understood how they fucked up the PSX Mini so badly.

There are easily 25 A+ games on the console that they could have stuck on the thing.

Fucking insane they sell 5 times more units in Japan than all of the US or the collection of nations that is EU.

The main strength of the PSX was third party support, which Sony as foremost an electronics company relied on. Great for the console back then, terrible for rerelease of sorts 20+ years down the line.
Smaller games and games with soundtracks and video can be licensing nightmares.
Bigger games had lasting popularity and third party studios were either making money off rereleases/remasters/reboots, or were planning to in the near future.
Sony also treated it like a cheap novelty release with little budget, expecting most buyers to not even play the thing and just put it on a shelf.

Nintendo's mini library in comparison was much simpler. They are foremost a videogames company with a lot of first party titles they could include, and for the rest they just reworded and reissued their old Virtual Console contracts with third parties.
