What was the big deal?
>>11685287they best rename that shit to gaylo combat evolved
>>11685287Epic free worlds, epic music, epic vehicles, epic guns, epic armor guy, epic aliens, scary, terrifying flood, fuck the flood, could never save keyes until I was older, because that shit was so out of nowhere and scary.
it was fun and xbox had no other games so it took off
>>11685302Ah yes, the 2000s meme of everything having to be epic. Thank God we are past that shit now
>>11685287It was really fun and one of the first four player console shooters that controlled well. Popularized twin stick controls as the default console shooter control scheme, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were great but aiming in Halo felt much nicer. Great single player too, the campaign was awesome (even if levels repeated and some like The Library were repetitive) with epic music and a nice story. Big open levels, the enemy AI and vehicles were nice.
>>11685287It got braindead casuals into FPS in the 6th gen. That's it. The game isn't very good, especially the multiplayer.
this game and GTA III ruined gaming forever
>>11685287Kino music, appealing and minimalistic art style, 80s movie homage, fun weapons and physics system and unpredictable gameplay.Whats not to love?
did anyone play the multiplayer on lan? seems like people forget this game wasnt online. none of my friends had an xbox so never even played halo multiplayer until 2. in hindsight it is a bit strange how mega popular this game got without it.
>>11685330Nope I was a PC Port god.
>>11685326It actually is good though. People loved it.>they were dumb and wrong for loving it, pc fps was betterPeople enjoyed it because it was good. Even people into stuff on PC typically enjoyed Halo when they actually played it.
>>11685330My friends and I did. We had some Halo LAN parties in high school, along with Unreal and Counterstrike. We'd also bring a Gamecube to play Melee. Good times.
>>11685337People loved thing ≠ thing is goodExhibit A: Super Mario 64.
>>11685330>in hindsight it is a bit strange how mega popular this game got without itthe truth is that the game itself was never "mega popular", the series was. CE sold 5m units across the entire Xbox's life cycle, while also being a launch title and pack-in game propped up by the biggest corporation in the world. meanwhile, goldeneye, a game thrown together by a dozen dudes in a UK office building 4 years prior, sold 8 million units. CE is a good game but it wasn't the social phenomenon people make it out to be, that started with halo 2.
>>11685287It is a fine game and they went all in. 60% of their budget was marketing. When people rattle on about the incestuous relationship of marketing and game reviews... Well it was always like that. Bungie bought out all the video game reviewers. Valve did the same with Half Life. People still remember the hype, they can't forget it.
>>11685361you are on a roll with terrible opinions.
The real question should be asking is what is with this autismo that keeps bringing up Halo, HL1/HL2, and Goldeneye falseflag threads.
>>11685287OOOOH Oh Waaa Oh OhOooo/spoiler]
>>11685287First competent console FPS
>>11685287It was the first evolution of the genre since Half-Life. The state of the genre was dire until Halo hit the scene.
>>11685330Buddy it was online with xlink kai, so much fun.
>Got Gamecube on release, PS2 around release.>Mostly played FPS on pc.>Made fun of Halofags.>Eventually get Halo on PC and it was maybe better than Half-Life 2.It's just a great game, and I shat on it for years.
Two entire decades later and people still seethe over it. Just goes to show how much console/platform wars still mean to autismos if virgins are still getting upset over Halo 1 of all things. I don't really get it, but I suppose there are a lot of very sad and strange people out there who feel an allegiance to certain brands or platforms of consumer electronics because they themselves have very little to be proud of. "PC Master Race" faggotry still persists and many neckbeards still feel a twinge of superiority for preferring a platform that is extremely popular. I don't know, its just autism I guess.Anyway, what was the big deal? I'll take the bait:>Seamless on foot/vehicle transitions >Wide open maps (not the Flood ones) bursting with soul.>Incredible skyboxes>Genuinely great graphics for the era, yes even including what was on PC.>Probably the first good story in a shooter. Bungie's own Marathon told a pretty original tale with an original world but well directed cutscenes with good voice acting trumps wall of text terminal logs. >FPS controls that felt incredibly natural for a gamepad.>Great splitscreen fun in the same vein as Goldeneye and PD.If you still hate Halo 1, I dunno. You really should grow up. It's fine to not enjoy it if you really prefer Quake, UT, Duke etc but actively hating on an obviously well made game just because you dislike it's influence is very childish. Halo 1 came to PC like 2-3 years later anyway and the vast majority of PC players loved it. There was a very active modding and multiplayer community for years.Unreal has a very similar vibe to Halo 1 but it can be very tedious and a bit long in the tooth. Still worth checking out.
>>11685370Was Super Mario 64 a groundbreaking title, in the footsteps of which every other 3D platformer followed? Absolutely. Is it a good game? Nope. And that's okay, not every game has to be good to be important. Super Mario Sunshine is the best execution of the gameplay formula that SM64 created, and that game fucks like a truck.
>>11685423The funniest part about all the whining is that Halo wasn't even that influential in the long run. Modern FPS games all rip off Medal of Honor/ CoD.
>>11685452>Is it a good game? Nope.I think it's a great game on top of being innovative. Part of the reason it was groundbreaking was because it made a fully 3D platformer that was very fun and interesting to play. To this day it has some of the best movement of any 3D platformer. Just dicking around in Mario 64 is still entertaining. Great level design and everything else on top of it. What don't you like about it?
>>11685537I'm a jrpg / pc fps guy and I agree. The movement in SM64 is buttery smooth and the levels are designed for the player movement. Fewer sketchy or clunky moments than most 3d games. It deserves its reputation.
>>11685317>Ah yes, the 2000s meme of everything having to be epic. Thank God we are past that shit nowYou are absolutely delusional
>>11685578I love mario 64 a lot but it does have some weird stuff that happens fairly regularly. It feels like every few levels that thing happens where you land right on the edge of some geometry and skid along it like it can't decide if you should be standing or falling or grabbing the ledge.
>>11685590Oh definitely, that happens enough that everyone encounters it at some point. But the movement is fluid and it feels very natural. No cinematic moves where the player loses control for a second or anything like that just to look cool.
>>11685505Maybe in the 360 era, but that has long passedNu-FPS are all Doom/Quake inspired
>IT'S CASUAL BECAUSE IT IS!!!it is casual because... it ruined le linear levels with only one way to go... and offered big fields?
>>11685329>minimalistic art styleyou don't know what this means
I have never played halo and I never will
>>11685505>Halo wasn't even that influential in the long run.???????>started trend of using a small number of weapons vs. holding 50 of them>started trend of moving away from health pickups and toward regenerating health>started trend of using matchmaking/MMR bullshit for multiplayerand that's just off the top of my head. next time check yourself before you wreck yourself
>>11685317Halo was way before that.>>11685398Still beautiful.>>11685387lol. lmao.
>>11685505Halo 4 and 5 strived to be like CoD so hard that they killed the franchise.
>>11685317>>11685328Lmao tendies are hilarious
>>11685758enlighten me? The environments are flat and basic, the forerunner architecture is minimalist basic shapes and colors/textures. All the alien designs are shaped to be recognized by their silhouette alone. Each color of elite is a grade to how powerful they are. They aren't covered in a bunch of detail and random shit that makes them harder to discern. The guns are instantly recognizable models for their functional but cool basic looking style. It's minimalist, I dont know any other word you would use for what they did. Its obviously the most "Japanese" influenced FPS ever made, theres tons of Anime and Japanese game influence going on. The best Japanese games tend to let as few design decisions as possible speak the loudest to the gameplay experience, when western games are overloaded with too much detail and "realism"
>>11685287First FPS with good AI
>>11685330splitscreen couch here, it was 2006.
>>11685330you could play online via gamespy arcade and xbconnect. there was noticeable lag if you weren't the host though.
>>11685758yeah lick that pussy
>>11685287They finally figured out the formula for controller FPS. For the first time ever people preferred a controller over a mouse.
>>11685423>but actively hating on an obviously well made game just because you dislike it's influence is very childish.isn't that like half the discussion around here?
>gaylokek
>>11685361Patrician taste
>>11687206the bullet magnetism and aim assist was a game changer for sure. Every fps that came after halo took notes from it. I don't know why so many people on this board shit on halo, it was a pretty influential game. And even outside of that it's just fun. The ai was actually smart and behaved like intelligent enemies actually would, ESPECIALLY on legendary.
>>11688132scrubs who wish they were good at games like quake shit on console fps out of spite. its the same thing as fgc posers hating on games like mk
>>11688134If you're in multiplayer and have auto-aim, well, you're playing Tee ball. I love halo btw.
>>11685287It was fun. Simple as.
>>11685317>>11685328100% correct>>11685583>>11685920^seething because they know its true and have no counter
>>11685326this pretty much. it was cool to see console kids get into a multiplayer fps after having played PC fps games for a while already. i played it at gatherings but was always terrible at Halo. Never liked the shields and all that shit that made the fights drag on. It made the gameplay revolve around knowing where item/health spawns are a bit too much.
>>11686065Sad it took this long for someone to mention AI. This was a major component of what made halo unique at the time.
>>11685287first quality FPS on a console
