My headcanon BS was always that the Apple of Enlightenment was some all knowing psychic computer of the Starmen/Giygas. I always hope Earthbound 2 would have been about traveling through space across different worlds to eventually get to the Starmen homeworld and convince the Apple that humans are not a threat to it/the Starmen after they witness what humans dark thoughts and ambitions did to Giygas when he tried to tap into them.

You would never see something like this in a modern game. You can tell it's made by someone who lived through the 1960s and 70s.

That object is the interval that connects Giygas aspect of time and the Devil Machine to the modern world, also, its what allows the Lost World to be as an after effect.
>>11692831I can't go into detail about Mother 3 lore without mondo spoilers, but I will say that the backstory of that game's world is much more directly relevant to the game's story than that of Earthbound's. This makes it more narratively compelling at the cost of having to keep it somewhat grounded. Mother 3 lore doesn't do any wacky shit like having Stonehenge and the Pyramids be abandoned military bases in an ancient war between humans and aliens, but I think it manages to be interesting in its own right nevertheless.
