Call me a brainlet, but I got lost at the end of Earthbound's plot.
Where exactly was Giygas? What was the apple of enlightenment? Were the kids clinically dead while their souls/consciousness was transferred to the robot bodies? How come the Mr. Saturn have such technology?
What ARE the Mr. Saturn, even!?

>Where exactly was Giygas?
In the lost underworld, in the very distant past. He assumed he'd be safe from Ness and his friends there
>What was the apple of enlightenment?
A prophecy-telling machine in Giygas' possession. It told Giygas his plan would fail due to three boys and a girl, but he went forward with his invasion anyway.
>Were the kids clinically dead while their souls/consciousness was transferred to the robot bodies?
We can assume Dr. Andonuts somehow kept their hearts beating.
>How come the Mr. Saturn have such technology?
They're super intelligent and worked together with Dr. Andonuts to develop it
>What ARE the Mr. Saturn, even!?
Aliens
>>
My headcanon BS was always that the Apple of Enlightenment was some all knowing psychic computer of the Starmen/Giygas. I always hope Earthbound 2 would have been about traveling through space across different worlds to eventually get to the Starmen homeworld and convince the Apple that humans are not a threat to it/the Starmen after they witness what humans dark thoughts and ambitions did to Giygas when he tried to tap into them.

>Where exactly was Giygas?
He was in the past. Giygas was literally launching his attack on Earth through space and time. As a cosmic being he presumably had the ability to warp space and time, which could also explain his "ungraspable attacks".
>What was the apple of enlightenment?
It was a device that tells the future, nothing is really known about it though.
>Were the kids clinically dead while their souls/consciousness was transferred to the robot bodies?
Probably
>How come the Mr. Saturn have such technology?
>What ARE the Mr. Saturn, even!?
They are aliens from outer space, so of course they have advanced technology.

It's likely the apple of enlightenment is the large orb behind the Starman deluxe in stonehenge, though it's never confirmed
>>
I wonder what sort of ridiculous interaction resulted in Giygas (presumably sane at the time) granting Porky a badass spider mech.
>>

Probably being a child with no sense of morality resulted in a particularly strong evil lingering in his mind that Giygas saw he could use, especially as someone close to Ness. Probably the Starmen would have been the liasons between him and their leader.
>>
You would never see something like this in a modern game. You can tell it's made by someone who lived through the 1960s and 70s.

The... Apple Computer...

>>What was the apple of enlightenment?
Buzz-Buzz's spaceship/time machine.

>I always hope Earthbound 2 would have been about traveling through space across different worlds
We almost had that but Itoi dropped the idea for the sake of creative limitations.

and technically this idea has been realized through a 7/10 fangame prequel, CogDis.

was Mother 3's lore as trippy and interesting as Earthbound?
>>
>>11692831
I liked it less.

It's a continuation, theres Mr. saturn on it too, and no aliens, but Porky sort of became a Giygas-like figure, and still uses some of the same robots Gigyas used, like the octopus ones.
>>
>>11692831
Yes, but its more subtle, and the original final boss fight that got cut but is still in the files, would have made the connections more on the nose.
>>

>Where exactly was Giygas?
In your pic, but billions of years prior. See the silver object? That's it, that's the invasion. That object is the interval that connects Giygas aspect of time and the Devil Machine to the modern world, also, its what allows the Lost World to be as an after effect.

I can't go into detail about Mother 3 lore without mondo spoilers, but I will say that the backstory of that game's world is much more directly relevant to the game's story than that of Earthbound's. This makes it more narratively compelling at the cost of having to keep it somewhat grounded. Mother 3 lore doesn't do any wacky shit like having Stonehenge and the Pyramids be abandoned military bases in an ancient war between humans and aliens, but I think it manages to be interesting in its own right nevertheless.
