I liked this game a lot as a kid and played it tons (on ST). It was frustrating at points but I enjoyed how much interaction and variety it offered. I ended up winning it a couple times eventually, which was very rewarding.
The sequel was a lot harder though which made it more difficult to appreciate for long play sessions.

I imagine the NES version was a lot more limiting. It wasn't perfect on computers, but the movement was relatively tolerable once you learned its quirks. Pits were always a bitch though. The game was sort of almost, but not quite, a cinematic platformer, but it lacked the discrete tile movement of your typical Prince of Persona clones, so it was much harder to judge safe jumping distance. Some even required you to switch to Raistlin and levitate over them, but if a monster came out you'd be fucked.
