How do you buy old games to play in their original formats? I'm done with de-makes, and 'anniversary editions' where they censor everything.

Is it really just as simple as buying an old console and games on amazon and just playing at home? Do you use AV to HDMI converters for newer monitors or do you just actually buy old CRT screens?

and how the fuck do you play old computer games that aren't compatible with windows 11?

I'm thinking of getting a gamecube, ps2, and dreamcast and setting up a little nostalgia corner.

i use everdrives and soft modding if possible but i play pretty much all from the 5th gen and up on original hardware. i have a CRT with S video so i bought like a splitter thing so i have all plugged there, it works quite well. I even have the Wii/PS3/360 hooked to it, those machines look great on CRTs

>I'm thinking of getting a gamecube
buy a wii. Its essentially a gamecube with an os so you can mod it to play gamecube roms without the disc and you'll have access to the virtual console which will let you play hundreds of older games as well.
>>
>>11690450
>you'll have access to the virtual console which will let you play hundreds of older games as well.
or you just can put emulators on it so you can have save states and stuffs. Playing Super Scope games on the Wii is awesome, it works great

Neither. get a powered upscaler.

yes, it is

Just emulate
>>
>>11690409
yeah OP you can do all of that retarded shit and spend thousands before you have a decent collection OR just fucking emulate everything for free and all you need is a controller and pc/phone.
>>
>>11690409
Amazon? AV to HDMI... You literally don't know anything about /vr/ do you?
Just go on ebay. Find something that's verified to work from a trusted seller. And buy a small handful of games. Some consoles need memory cards so remember that. And ask / look around your area for a cheap CRT.
You're welcome.

Did you just get switched into our universe?
>>
>>11690409
Buy a Retrotink2x clone and get to playing. Get a CRT for sure but this is a good way to start.
>>
If it's still a thing in your area. It's probably not. You can always test a system at a used video game store. I used to demand that customers see the system work before they purchase. Most didn't want to take the time and it baffled me. Just look, this is the system. This is how it works. If you operate it as intended it'll work just the same for you at home. Also clean your fucking games unless you want to constantly clean your system's contacts.

If you want the full retro experience then you buy the console and the games and a CRT, probably from ebay or 2nd hand stores or goodwill etc.

What I do though is just buy the authentic controllers for the systems I want and then connect them to the PC with an adapter like this one
https://www.mayflash.com/product/PC035.html
then just play the games using emulators. Emulators are far better now than they used to be, the only real difference is the image doesn't look exactly like a CRT, but you can adjust it to get something similar. Also input delay is a little higher but it's barely perceptible, to me anyway. I just played through Metroid Prime 1 & 2 recently using Dolphin emulator and my old genuine gamecube controller and one of those adapters and it plays great. I have the physical metroid disks and a real gamecube and I'd rather play it on the emulator because it looks so much better.
>>
>>11691230
Even if your emulating, you can hook up a modern PC to a crt with an adapter. I got one for old PC games.
>>

based
get the 6 pak, ecco 1, earthworm jim 1.
>>
>>11690409
I already had CRTs, but from what I can tell, the difficulty of getting one is going to depend a lot on your area. It'll be easy in a more poor, rural area, and harder in a densely populated city. You can just get the consoles and games off ebay.

I'm saying miniature from now on just because of all these faggoty responses.

This is the only chance you have to prevent yourself going down the hardware rabbithole. It is can be costly, unreliable and fills your house with junk.

If i had my time again I would just stick with emulation. Do that for a year and maybe, maybe if you really really love a specific game or platform try real hardware. Otherwise, fren, run.

You can play on your Smart TV with special devices but i don't know if older consoles like the NES will work

but miniature is a word in english

If that's the case then it all makes sense now.

Just buy the consoles and games and a CRT. It's that simple... However...
Unless you're buying NES, GB or something and random games at that, you're a bit late for that. Everything is as expensive as ever, and if you're starting from scratch, don't bother. GC especially cost a shit ton right now. PS2 should be oookay
The best you can do is acquire a console, then a flashcart, a mod chip, soft mod, etc. and a handful of cheap common classics and okay games you can get randomly once in a while. Anything else will cost you the fuck out and I don't recommend shelling out. I do not recommend going with Analogue's stuff for older consoles either, that's only worth it if you have an actual collection
>AV converters
They all have downsides. The cheap ones will have washed out colors but they're "okay", they "work". A crt is best because of pixel blending and it usually hides the jaggies, muddy textures, etc. of early 3D
>Old Windows games
Virtual Machines, PC emulators like PCEM and DosBox and generally Wine under Linux
>Better solution
Ultimately, if you're starting from scratch, don't have a CRT, etc. Just emulate. PC, Steam Deck, dedicated Chinese crap, even do it all FPGA like the MisTer, Analogue Pocket, etc. are damn fine enough (FPGA is for 5th gen and down). A soft modded Wii is great if you have a CRT
That should quickly cover everything

>>11690409
Yes
Basically
>Homebrew is easy as fuck and because homebrew happened early to the console, it has plenty
>Practically emulate everything up to the N64 and PS1
>N64 is better emulated through VC channels and injection. PS1 is so-so I heard. GBA works
>Even Dosbox, ScummVM IIRC
>Can display 240p, which is the native res of the older consoles
>It's the strongest capable SD console around
>Native Gamecube games support (Even Triforce games IIRC), and do not underestimate the Wii and Wiiware library (Not retro, check /v/ recommended games wiki, it has basically everything. But it removed stuff that has better port elsewhere)
>Has a nice homebrew video player that supports network shares, and even .mkv stuff with fancy subs and typesetting should work nicely for older SD anime. I watched the first few 100 eps of One Piece that way. It starts shitting on mkv at widescreen (480p?), but MP4 with no subs on old codecs should probably be fine
etc etc etc
There's probably way more that I forgot and you could definitive say more about the Wii
>>
>>11690409
Just emulate them and use a filter if you want something reasonable.
If you find a CRT for cheap at a yard sale or free on the side of the road, grab it.
That's it. Just play the game.
