what was, objectively speaking, the greatest game ever made? not your favorite, not the best selling, but the greatest. the one which did more than anything else before it, and had the greatest cultural and creative impact. You have to provide an actual argument, not just "because I like this one the most".
>>11691717Not that boring melodramatic emo garbage FF7 which is epitome of fedoracore gaming
probably super mario bros. mainly for actually showing how a platformer should control and being the mascot for vidya forever
>>11691731Yeah, when I saw the thread was asking about most advancement and impact, I knew this was the answer. There's a reason Mario is the first thing people think of when they think "video game"
I had an ex gf that looked like her i cant play this game no more
>>11691717Portopia Serial Murder Case, helped establish visual novels, Kojima, and Dragon Quest.
Tetris. It's the peak of game design, it does so much with so little, it's immediately easy to understand, it's abstract enough to be appealing to any type of player, even to people that don't play games otherwise, and at high levels, it requires a good mix of reflexes and planning.
No One Can Stop Mr. Domino, on ps1. to this day, he still hasnt been stopped, by anyone.
>>11691717in terms of pure storytelling in an interactive medium, its FFVII.in terms of the most influential and important to gaming history, its super mario bros. dragon quest is also up there.in terms of most innovative and still executing for its time period, its OOT or mario 64.
DOOM
>>11691742>helped establish all these things only weeb shut ins and japan cares about not a great argument desu senpai
>>11691786Not everyone on /vr/ hates themselves like you do, anon
depends entirely on what camp you associate with>PCvegans: DOOM, starcraft, diablo, half life, warcraft 3, shitty WRPGs>tendies: SMB, SMB3, TLOZ, OOT, mario 64, super metroid>snoys: MGS 1/2/3, FFVII, RE 1/2, SOTN>seg-ACKs: some obscure saturn game a dozen people played, i honestly dont even know.
>>11691796Fuck off to /v/
regardless of your answer, any reasonable response will be from the 3rd or 5th gens, as these were the peaks of innovation and soul in vidya. 4 and 6 were the rehash eras, and of course 7+ is the slop era.
>>11691717Pong or Space Invaders. Hard to beat either of them for influence. Pong for bringing games to the masses, Space Invaders for inspiring just about everything afterwards. In general, the first games are going to do more than anything before them just by default, and they're going to have the most creative influence, again by default. Shit man, "video game noises" are still beeps and boops in the mainstream. That's how much influence the early games had.
not sure what the best game ever is, but the worst is pretty clear.
>>11691841Just realized there's a new version of Moguri Mod released last fall with updated backgrounds and textures that supposedly look not pastel like it used to.I could use another playthrough, good idea anon.
>>11691717GTA San Andreas or Resident Evil 4
>and had the greatest cultural and creative impactI don't know, RPG shit is now in literally every game imaginable so I guess it's the games that shaped the genre like Wizardry, Ultima, Druaga, Zelda, Dragon Quest, etc
Ocarina of Time is the best game ever. It was the first game to ever be Ocarina of Time, which is the best game ever, and it introduced the idea of a 'best game ever' to millions of players. Truly ahead of its time. Best game ever.
>>11692170>going out of your way to ruin an already good looking game "people" like this dont even deserve to live
>>11692214I have over 1,000 hrs in the game, I have my childhood psx copy. I'll do what I want to.And yes, it looks WAY less pastel than the old moguri mod. 60fps, increased draw distance on world map. Exceptional. The finest. This is the only screenshot I've got so far, look at dat grass.
>>11691741Did your ex also get stabbed with a katana?
>>11691717I'll go with Ocarina of Time, because of variety. There's action, there's puzzles, exploration, playing songs, horse riding, minigames. Good gameplay AND it had a classic, well told story and world.A complete package, something for everyone, young and old.
>>11692223You're judging it based on things you liked about it and not OP's bullshit criteria of "impact".How dare you.
>>11692259It's not among my favorite games, I just recognize why it's the GOAT. Can't have impact if it can't draw people in.My answer might change if we aren't limited to retro
>>11692218wow it looks like absolute fucking garbage, what a shocker. but hey glad you got your fucking 60 fps in a jrpg, thats super duper important!! Ill go ahead and just stick to the real thing instead of tasteless demasters, like anyone with self respect would do.
>>11691717you posted it. from start to finish I truly enjoy every second of FFVII, and every replay is somehow still a special experience. theres plenty of other games Im just as nostalgic for from that time period, but none of them are special in the way FFVII touches me on an spiritual level. yes Im being completely unironic, it really is just a SPECIAL game and theres nothing thats even close to it really. why is it so special, its hard to even describe... the atmosphere, writing, characters and music are all peak. the world is unique and every area feels soulful and interesting. idk man. but ffvii is literally the GOAT and Im hardly the only person who thinks that.
>>11692287I've played the "real thing" many times. When it came out even.I actually prefer this. No cinematics before battles, can blast through dialog, I can see details you never could in 320x240. Shit, if you want you can replace Tetra Master with Triple Triad. The world is yours.
>>11692302(continued) and aside from my personal feelings about it, its got a great argument for the GOAT in terms of influence and cultural relevance. I mean it literally shifted the entire console landscape for good, what other games can say that? what other game has inspired such a loyal and dedicated following for decades to come? yeah, the original super mario bros is probably the MOST influential game, but I dont think its inspired and beloved by the hearts of millions the way ffvii is- most mario fans will say smb3 or world is better. OOT gets a lot of credit for being the first good 3d adventure game and absolutely nailing it, and its definitely up there too. in terms of gameplay, its certainly a lot more inventive. but as a narrative piece, its so much simpler and childlike compared to vii. it doesnt have the mature themes that make vii such a universal and well aged experience. alright Im done ranting for now, go ahead and call me a faggot boomer now.
>>11692303wait it has triple triad but with the same cards from IX? if so thats actually pretty based.. (why does vii and ix get all this fucking love from modders and viii gets left in the god damn dust)
>>11691717That's an impossible question to answer due to how widely varying people's opinions are on different genres. >>11691841That game is better than 99% of all RPGs made since then.
>>11692319>triple triad but with the same cards from IX? Not sure, I saw the option but haven't tried it out. I'll check in a bit Saved in Evil Forest where there aren't card battles for a bit.>(why does vii and ix get all this fucking love from modders and viii gets left in the god damn dust)I don't know, man. I really want a good fields/backgrounds mod for VIII, it's a beautiful game. I've heard some are out there. A lot of the mods I've seen are not my style. I was actually about to replay VIII then I saw the Moguri update.
>>11692325and its 100% worse than the 4 games in the series before it. but yeah compared to FFXII its an absolute masterclass.
>>11691841FFX is FF matured into perfection
>>11692325>That game is better than 99% of all RPGs made since then. Not really a high bar, it's a 2000 game
>>11692332I alllllmost agree with you. but the lack of exploration and secret/optional areas is just too much of an issue for me to call it the perfect FF. also the music, while great, isnt on the same level as peak uematsu. the perfect ff still gonna be 6/7/8 for me. but in terms of battle system, story, and characters (the most important things) X is peak.
FF VI-X are all tied for the greatest game everyou can argue and nitpick over which one is the best, but it doesnt matter. collectively, they are the peak of videogames as an immersive art form.
If FFX is peak videogames then so is DQ8
>>11692353great game but the entire story is literally "go defeat big bad guy, no go defeat the REAL big bad guy". there are zero plot twists, no nuance and everything is wrapped in the most generic and stereotypical manner possible. thats comfy and fine but its absolute childs play compared to FFX which will actually fuck your mind and rip your heart out if you let it.
>>116917171/2If we're purely talking about cultural and creative impact, it would be Space Invaders. Hugely innovative, inspired tons of clones and conventions, first blockbuster, first system seller (for the Atari VCS), created the first iconic characters of the industry...But the GOAT doesn't exist. Not everyone is looking for the same things on video games and there isn't a single good way of making video games. Games like Doom, Street Fighter 2, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania SOTN, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Renegade, Tactic Ogre LUCT, Metal Gear Solid, Quake, Monkey Island, King’s Quest, Prince of Persia, Karateka, Tetris, Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Dragon Quest, GTA, Dune 2, etc, had an impact on the industry and inspired lots of other games. Crediting one single game will always be a mistake.Even games that aren’t always included on these lists have also contributed to the industry. Samurai Shodown was the first major fighting game focused on the use of weapons and also the first major fighting game that wasn’t a clone of Street Fighter 2. Final Fantasy 2 is often considered one of the weakest entries in the series, yet it was the first jrpg that had an actual story instead of having a bunch of mini-quests.
>>116925902/2Cultural impact isn’t also a completely reliable source of value. Because of console wars, people and press often give special treatment to the games made by first-parties.Besides, why should the best game be the one that starts trends? Monkey island 1 renovated graphical adventures and got rid of some of their worst vices, but fans of the series often prefer Monkey Island 2. Donkey Kong surprised people with its prerendered graphics, but most fans prefer DKC2. Devil May Cry defined modern beatemups, but most people prefer DMC3. Renegade codified the classic beatemup genre, but most people prefer the ones made by Sega or Capcom. Final Fantasy Tactics was a spiritual sequel of Tactics Ogre, the game that inspired a new branch of tactical games, yet it’s a strong candidate to the title of GOAT because of its spectacular gameplay, plot, artistic design and level of polish, and saying the same about any of the sequels I mentioned before wouldn’t be out of place either.
>>11692319>wait it has triple triad but with the same cards from IX?Yep. I guess so. There doesn't appear to be a grid for triple triad or all the rule sets but it's there and it works you can switch between modes without losing your cards.
>>11691717I don't there's any one single right answer to this question; it really depends on your point of view. What you consider great, what parts of gaming especially connect to you.Two people can say different games and both of them could be completely right, just in different ways.My personal answer is Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. It didn't invent a new genre of game or pioneer some new technique that every game still uses to this day, but because it was a game that was made by literally one guy, and was so ludicrously, hilariously, insanely successful, it blazed the trails for thousands of other creators to make their own indie games. Not only are there hundreds (maybe even thousands at this point) of fangames based directly on Touhou Project, enabled by ZUN's extremely lenient willingness to allow almost anyone to make and even sell them, but who knows how many other creators were inspired by Touhou's success to make games that are completely new.Touhou 6 is also just a beautiful, fun, and extremely challenging game by itself that you can play over and over and over again without getting tired of. Despite how simple the game is, every time I go back to it I discover something new.And of course it laid the groundwork for every Touhou game that followed it, many of which are masterpieces in their own right.Especially nowadays when games are being made by massive teams of people, with credits that stretch on and on so long your screensaver turns on, I really appreciate it as a reminder that you don't need a studio or a budget to make a wonderful game. You just need passion and a dream.
