>the game with the worst camera on earth
>and some of the most bland and empty levels
>that makes you replay each level 6 times
>with some of the most nonsensical and frustrating physics
>where you accelerate like a van, turn like a boat, ricochet off walls like a bouncy ball, struggle to walk up a slight incline, and with literal invisible walls scattered throughout levels

>is somehow regarded as one the best games ever made
How the fuck did we get to this point?

It's a 3D version of a yuro collectathon platformer more than a Mario game and that's why it's good.

was literally the very first game with a "camera" by the way. literally invented the concept. youre welcome creatividad.

Mad people don't suck off Crash huh?

its so fun and you can just get straight into it. something like sunshine you have to watch cutscenes, tutorial, fucking endless crap before you can just play. And you're complaining about a camera which doesn't matter at all when you have 360 different degrees to push the stick to move

What is with the obsession Gen Faggot has with Super Mario 64?
You weren't there, you will never have been there. You will live your entire life knowing that you were not there.

It's literally just Crashfags from what I've seen. They're super insecure that basically no one gives a fuck about Crash as a character or his boring games.

People who make bait threads that fit /vr/ like to post them on both boards just to see which one catches on better.

Meanwhile Mario 64 makes you retread each level a half dozen times, that's easily worse.

>And you're complaining about a camera which doesn't matter at all when you have 360 different degrees to push the stick to move
????

All movement in Mario 64 is relative to the dogshit camera, the same camera that spazzes out constantly while you're moving and refuses to point where you want it to so you can actually fucking see where you're jumping

Ban cross posting

I read your bait and felt nothing but pity for you. Actually that was a lie I didnt read past the title, but I do still pity you
>>
>>11988912
Of all the complaints, like a lot of the levels being shitty, I can't understand the absolute larp about the camera. Its not that bad its just different
>>
I have no problem giving Mario 64 its due credit and saying it was revolutionary and an amazing game for its time. It had the best 3D controls at that point and set the standard for what a 3D platformer could and should be. I do have to agree with OP though that it's a bit ridiculous that it is still considered one of the best in it's genre when it's been surpassed by almost everything that came after it, especially by games on the same system. Easily would take any of Rare's platformers over it any day, or unironically, either of the Gex games. Mario 64 has an almost unacceptable lack of variety across it's 120 stars. Most of the mission objectives are to get to a specific spot in a level and, outside of pretty much exclusively Tick Tock Clock, it almost never requires any sort of actual platforming or has any real challenge behind it. It's boring. And when you're not doing that it's usually some other boring shit like getting 8 red coins or 100 coins. Occasionally theres an semi-interesting boss fight or enemy but there aren't enough of them.

What really brings my blood to a boil though is the people that are a level beyond sucking Mario 64s cock and are so far gone that they actively lie about the game. I have had people tell me to my face that Mario Sunshine has a bad camera and that 64s is better. Really, the limited to a few set positions camera that will literally tell you "no" and refuse to move 90% of the time is better than the one that has full unrestricted 360 control? Or that the game has these immaculate controls and physics when in reality Mario is about as responsive as a character from the latest Rockstar game, constantly shits his pants when it comes to walljumps and ledge grabs and overall is just slow and sluggish. I don't care that speedrunners can do whatever the fuck, that's not anyone's typical experience. I've had enough of you Mario 64 fucks, every single 3D platformer that has come out after it is better than it and its time to move on.

>turn like a boat
Mario turned on a dime. Try playing the original Tomb Raider.
>>
>>11989695
64 Mario feeling stiff was deliberate. He feels weighty, has very limited air control and has momentum in his actions, just like 2D Mario games before it. If he's at max speed, he can't just turn on a dime and dive to the opposite way. To compensate, he has a very powerful long jump and triple jump.
Newer 3D Mario have no weight, he moves at max speed instantly, has total air control and he can do an U-turn in mid air. But as long as the levels are made accordingly, I don't see it as a problem.

>>11989786
Mario does a weird C shape turn when stopped.

Not 3D.

If you let go of the stick and he's actually still, he can turn on a dime.

>Crash 1 2 and 3
Extremely linear experiences that unironically could have been created on 16 bit hardware with isometric levels. Fine games but they really don't utilize the 3d space in a meaningful way
>Banjo Kazooie
Another fine platformer but the gameplay is highly methodical with every jump requires a substantial amount of time to perform. The special moves are cool but locking them off randomly doesn't help.
>Banjo Tooie
Same issues as the first game only this time with labarythian level design that is more of a headache than joy.
>Spyro 1
Fine platformer, lacks nearly the amount of movement Mario 64 has and has almost no verticality to it's level design
>Jak & Daxter
Rudimentary as fuck. Hardly a platformer.
>Psychonauts
Is pretty limited movement wise and is carried by its story.
>Sonic Adventure 1 and 2
Lmao those games fucking suck

Such realistic and intuitive physics...
>>
>>11990105
>realism is more important than fun
>>
>>11990106
Physics should be intuitive, not pure nonsense. You accelerate like a damn minivan, yet if you do a roll move you just transform into a ball and instantly fling around at breakneck speeds so fast it looks the game is bugging out and you're warping around. It's just fucking retarded

And yet if you actually play it (which I guess you haven't) it is perfectly intuitive. Maybe try actually doing that before you say a bunch of bullshit you only gleaned from webms.

>frogposter is an illiterate retard
Shocking

>>11990127
I have played it, it's one of the worst platformers I've ever played, and I've played hundreds
>>
>camera takes care of itself and mostly puts itself where it needs to be
>le modern audience works their thumb raw trying to manually control the camera, because they can't conceive of games not being third person shooters
At what point are you just stupid and unable to adapt to how the developers want you to play?
>>
>>11990139
If the camera was consistent, it wouldn't be an issue.
If the camera was manual, it wouldn't be an issue.

The issue is the camera is always looking the wrong way AND spazzes the fuck out while you're moving around which is a bit of a fucking problem when all movement is relative to that camera.

It's the worst possible implementation.
>>
>>11990146
Maybe happens like twice in the entire game.
>>
>>11990150
Literally happens dozens of times per stage, you fucking retard
>>
Everyone who thinks M64 is some kind of ungodly abomination to control is worse at games than your average child in the 90's.
>>
>>11990152
Not when I'm playing it.
>>
>>11990139
It's fine for the most part, but certain places the default camera really sucks, like on top of the Boo's house and near the top of Wet-Dry World. The former you can only switch to close Mario cam which is just as bad.
>>
>>11990152
When? I recently replayed mario 64 and collected all 120 stars and the camera was hardly ever an issue and almost never switched on me randomly. The only real issues with the game's controls are really minor things like how Mario can't decide whether he's going to 180 or make a huge U turn or the lack of platform momentum but that's really it and can be excused given how fucking innovative it is.
>>
>>11988912
Despite the music being instantly iconic, nothing about this game feels like Mario to me and as soon as the novelty of being 3d wore off I never really thought it was that fun of a game
>>
>>11988912
>where you accelerate like a van, turn like a boat, ricochet off walls like a bouncy ball, struggle to walk up a slight incline, and with literal invisible walls scattered throughout levels

Yes, and this is exactly what makes the game fun. Modern platformers have no momentum, and they suck ass.
>>
>>11988912
>bait thread
>>
>>11988950
Oh yeah? How about you name these euro platformers then?cause I wanna try them
>>
>>11989287
Honestly, saying he can't enjoy sm64 because he wasn't there, doesn't do sm64 justice. The game is timeless unironically
>>
>>11990972
I bet that faggot is pushing the lie that Mario 64 is built off some Yoshi game Argonaut conceptualized for Nintendo before going off to use that concept to make Croq. Which is laughable given how fucking shit Croq is.
