I think egonomics on the Thor are going to be terrible, as we have already seen with the ayaneo pocket flip. For this reason I'm no longer excited about these handhelds and I'm just waiting for the Flip 2 to drop in price to replace my RP4.

Why are you just willingly ignoring the fact that ergonomics for handhelds has always been critically dependent on your own hand size?

How is discussing Android-run chinkhelds considered retro here, but talking about Persona 4 isn’t?
>>
>>12022021
Maybe, but seriously no matter the hand size, there's no way that a dpad and joystick placement that close to the edge and bottom is confortable to use. I had to buy a tpo grip for my RP4 to be confortable and I have medium sized hands. I think the flip 2 did well in that regard moving the dpad and face buttons to the center. But with these dual screen devices there's no room

Anyone here have the 35xxSP? How are the buttons on the new versions? Any hinge issues?
>>
I wish they made a device with the exact dimensions of the miyoo mini plus with a brighter oled screen and slightly better processor. Now THAT would be a dream handheld
>>
>>12022006
Both devices seem to be following the 3DS style layout with the addition of stacked shoulder buttons and a proper analog stick at the problem. Because of the dual screen in the middle, ergonomics are undoubtedly going to be fucked as a result for anything besides 3/DS games. No real sense in paying for anything besides the cheapest model of either to emulate 3DS games and call it a day.
>>
>>12022502
face buttons are ok but the dpad had no change so could be a long term problem if you don't do anything (taped mine but might add washers)

Guys, is any of those new retro handhelds good enough to use for LSDJ? I wonder especially about sound quality, saves (when I used chink clone of everdrive GB and original GB it had problems with saving ). Also for LSDJ you need certain setup of keys (you use select+dpad to change screens) so for example GBA key setup would not work with it

After beating DuckTales 2, finishing off the 4 major DuckTales Capcom titles from back then, I'm feeling sort of... depressed? It's like, what now? What's a good site to download roms from? I remember there was one full packed of GBA and NDS roms but it was some 15 years ago and I can't seem to find it again, nor I remember the name. I tried looking with google but half the sites I get either bitch about ublock or are considered unsafe by firefox.
>>
I want to get the Thor so bad, but there's a few things stopping me:

1) Ergonomics seem shit. That d-pad placement is as bad as the RP5.
2) Hinge seems to be the exact same as the Flip 2 and will most likely break.
3) It may have the same input lag delay as the Odin 2
>>
>>12023754
Just google it. First result usually leads you to reddit which leads you to myrient.
>>
>>12023127
Test it on your PC, Gambatte is the core normally used for GB on everything, IIRC low end is too slow for SameBoy. Sound quality is pretty meh, speakers aren't great save for a few select ones, interference while WiFi is in active use.
>Also for LSDJ you need certain setup of keys (you use select+dpad to change screens) so for example GBA key setup would not work with it
Just rebind select.

If you're worried about economics just take the grip pill. That's what I did for my N3DSXL and it felt so much better. I understand not wanting another peripheral to carry along or not wanting to add bulk. But in the end there will always be tension between ergonomics and portability. I'm happy using a grip at home and maybe going without it when I travel. The reality is if I ever do use these handhelds on the go it's never for extended periods to where ergonomics would really bother me.

The portal+grip is the only chinkheld that I can actually play for multiple hours without any sort of hand cramping, might be a big hands thing.

aliexpress, look for store name that is e.g. 'Ampown Online Store' and not 'Shop11054873' and if the prices looks too good to be true, it probably is.
also aliexpress has a 'coins' thing where you can get further discounts but you need to daily collect them, or get them for placing orders and writing reviews.

Hey, it's >>11973056 again.

I'm enjoying the Miyoo Mini Plus a ton, and it's supplanted my Steam Deck as the retro gaming device, since it's nice to leave the Deck suspended on something besides RetroArch, and also keeping any progress made on the device I always have in my pocket. I'm not really much of a stickler for super accurate emulation, ideally it'd be cycle accurate, but I can manage with even allegedly "low quality" emulation.
Even still, I notice that emulating GBA games on my Steam Deck just "feels" better, than on the Miyoo Mini Plus, and wanted to ask why this is?

Please note, don't try to tell me it's impacting my gameplay, or give me really subjective stuff like "it increases the skung factor." My most played game in the past few days, on both systems, is Sonic Pinball party, and with save state + rewind fuckery some of these shots are tighter than a Royal Guard parry from DMC3, maybe even frame perfect, and I'm able to land them relatively consistently on both ("relative" because it's fucking pinball, even on a physical table I'll miss some of them). But again, I will concede that it just "feels" better on my Deck, beyond the higher resolution and ergonomics, and want to ask why is that?

Are some of the frames maybe lasting too long on the MM+? Does it run at like 57 fps instead of 60? I'm curious why there's such a discrepancy that I can feel it, but not easily see it, and I'm not asking because I think you guys are lying, I just never really cared enough to look into it since if an emulator doesn't outright break my game then I'd always considered it "good enough"

thanks
>>
>>12027670
I've never had a MM myself but chances are you are hit with one of the following:
>the screen itself isn't as high quality as the steam deck
worse response rate etc
>the OS on the MM is laggier/doesn't do as well getting around input lag
I don't recall if MM is android or linux but its probably not a super up to date version
>the emulator you are using on the MM has more input lag than the one on the steam deck
presuming both are using retroarch that shouldn't be too big of a thing tho
>the steam deck is strong enough for better emulator settings
like run ahead to reduce input lag, but you probably haven't set that

FPS drops are possible, but gba isn't particularly high spec. I'd personally bet its a worse response rate + 16-66 ms of input lag (gba sp native is 33ms vs 16 gba I think?)
>>
Found some guy selling his used Arc-D very cheap on a local (as in from my Country) online marketplace. But I wanted to make sure there are no gotchas with this device before I got it. Is it any good (build, dpad, etc)? Is there any need to replace the stock firmware?

It’s pretty great in terms of ergonomics, buttons feel nice, haven’t really noticed any false inputs (though my point of reference is M30 which had some shitty false diagonals, haven’t held a real mega drive controller since I was a kid). Stock Linux refused to run any games, maybe the SD-card was just that shit, no idea. Stock android was okay, ended up flashing GammaOScore, works fine but Daijisho refuses to work with the standalone Yaba Pro 2 standalone app. Some people use Rocknix, haven’t tried it myself though since it doesn’t work with Android

Speaking of efficiency, the topic of Arm vs. x86 came up here, as it does every year. AMD, almost like Intel recently, declared that the myth that x86 can't be efficient was refuted last year. Both AMD Ryzen and Intel Core can offer extremely long runtimes in notebooks, while accessing the entire x86 ecosystem. Ultimately, the overall package doesn't offer an advantage for Arm.

Like >>12027383 said, vertical devices aren't terribly comfortable. It still sounds like a good device at its very low pricepoint, but personally I prefer something like the RG40XXH more compared to its vertical equivalent. About the same width/thickness as my phone with its case on, but more comfortable to play older games on due to being wider, and I think its worth it for how cheap it went for on sale (paid about 70 CAD so probably 50 USD). Probably not more powerful though for an up to PS1 device but may have slightly better build quality to make up for it.
As for buying the cheapest handhelds consistently on something like Aliexpress, they have pretty frequent sales. Just check not only the product but the store ratings as well. I unfortunately can't speak on not getting duped by any clones but I think there's only really there's only the one vertical model with a 3.6" 480p screen with the D-pad on top.

>worse response rate etc
maybe. The timing of the shots in SPP are identical, but the "smoothness" of the gameplay feels a bit off on the MM+ compared to the Deck. the easiest way to put it is that I swear it's like some frames feel a few milliseconds faster or longer than others

>I don't recall if MM is android or linux but its probably not a super up to date version
I don't think the OS would impact it much, because OnionOS and the MM+ in general is rooted in Linux, and so is the Deck. I can say from experience though, since I have multiple PCs, every game I've played on my gaming Windows PC feels better than on my Linux PC. And it's not a power issue, because both can max out Sonic Robo Blast 2's 144 fps for my monitor. But the "off" feeling going from my Windows PC to my Linux PC, with SRB2, is the same weird off-ness I feel going from the Deck to the MM+

>presuming both are using retroarch that shouldn't be too big of a thing tho
yeah, I don't think it's a retroarch issue since both are using it

>like run ahead to reduce input lag, but you probably haven't set that
I might on the Deck, it's been so long since I tweaked performance settings. I know I knew enough about that aspect of RA to actually open up the performance settings menu and try tweaking it, only to to undo said tweaks since it was too much for the MM+ to handle.

Also to ask another question to the thread, is there another chinkheld with better specs, as popular as the MM+, with an OnionOS styled suspend? I ask because I was curious and looked on Etsy for knickknacks and MM+ paraphenalia, and after seeing the absolute swathe of novelty stuff like primo buttons/d-pads, color options, accessories, etc, I'd enjoy having those options for when this piece of shit inevitably shits itself too, going by what Anons in the archive say is inevitable with all chinkhelds.

Might be the refresh rate on the screen, that it might not be exactly 60.000 but slightly less or more.
The core cycles might be slightly off, you can test that by leaving a game with an in game timer running on both devices to see if the differentiate after some time (like Mario kart)

I'm a massive handheldfag despite having a really good desktop PC and discovering these things over the past few years has made me waste a ton of money. I also ordered the Ayaneo Pocket DS, Flip 1S and Ayn Thor. I'm also considering the Win 5 because it looks so janky.

So far this is what I have:

GPD Duo
GPD Pocket 3
GPD Pocket 4
GPD Win Mini
GPD Win 4
GPD Win max 2
GPD MicroPC
GPD MicroPC2
Ayaneo Flip DS
Ayaneo 3
Ayaneo Pocket Micro
Ayaneo Pocket Ace
Ayaneo Pocket S2 Pro
Retroid Pocket Mini
Retroid Pocket 5
Anbernic RG Slide

The ergonomics on the Flip DS are pretty bad, yeah.
>>
>>12032009
Under 3 hours of use on all of them, right?
>>
>>12032016
The only one I don't use that much is the Flip DS. I play the Win 4, Mini and Aya 3 in my chair when I'm in front of my PC. The Max 2 is hooked up to an egpu in my living room with my flight sim setup. I used the Pocket 3 for a couple of years, it replaced my X1 nano. The Pocket 4 I just got this month and I like it a lot more than the 3 so far, mainly because of the color. The Ace, S2 pro, Retroids and Anbernic were all bought this month, so I haven't had a lot of time on them. The slide actually came in a few hours ago.

If you place those dpad-joysticks a bit diagonally like that one Ayaneo whatever the fuck that has those reversible things, then it would be perfect. Sad thing is that you would have to make the device a bit wider.
>>

>>12032229
The main reason they have diagonal placement is to find the most ergonomic compromise between directional inputs like shown here
>>12022275
This device's screen is 7" in length enabling more ergonomic placement of controls. But the swappable nature of the other design is to "min-max" the ergos on ether directional input. In most games, the other directional input is usually used in a menu or as hotkeys. This design is focusing the ergonomics for their primary use, while respecting the original design's size.

How reliable is Ayaneo? Are their devices prone to QC issues? Asking because I have an Odin 2 and was considering selling it to get the Pocket DS instead. Odin 2 is honestly fine, but the screen lag DOES bother me in action games and platformers and not all can be fixed since non-retroarch emus don't have key frame skip or whatever.

The only other consideration is the Ayn Thor. I know it's $100 more expensive, but the Pocket DS seems to have better ergos, a larger screen, and a bigger battery.

As someone that's owned two of Ayaneo's android devices (Pocket Air and Pocket EVO) I can say that I personally never experienced any QC problems, but that's not to say that it can't happen. I remember when the EVO launched that there were some complaints regarding the quality of the thermal pads they used, which would lead to some thermal throttling during the WildLife extreme stress test which would lead to roughly 70% stability. Personally my model was fine at around 83% and I know others posted their results to have highs in the 90% range, but your millage may vary.
As for them being reliable I'd say so, though I never tested their slide/clamshell models.
>>

The intention for that photo is probably to show off the difference in brightness.

Ayaneo is launching an actually affordable handheld...and not for Konkr which is supposed to be their "affordable" brand. They're even bringing back the headphone jack this time around after making a ton of Android devices without them.
Where it might fall apart are the specs though. Has a 4.2" 960p screen and a 4500mAh battery but the Helio G90T is said to be somewhere between the T618 and the T820. Not to mention the devices will only have 2 or 3GB of RAM so this is basically capping out at DC support at most.

>>12037427
With both of these upcoming powerful clamshells, it really is best just to wait. Sure missing out on the early bird pricing for Ayaneo sucks since their handhelds are insanely expensive, but it is very much a gamble to see how long these devices will maintain their hinges for. At the very least nows a good time to barter for people selling their used handhelds in an attempt to jump onboard the clamshell train.

Reminder that Mangmi Air X is a scam. Its SoC is worse than the T610 in RP2S, which released for $90 two years ago:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Unisoc-T610-vs-Qualcomm-Technologies%2C-Inc-SM6115/4604vs4460
https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/unisoc-tiger-t610-vs-qualcomm-snapdragon-662
BOTH the CPU and GPU performance is worse. Totally not worth buying unless the only system you want to play is PSP and you HAVE TO emulate it on a chinkheld instead of using superior options like a Vita or or an actual PSP. I guess it has a bigger 16:9 display going over RP2S at the very least.

Not only is the battery life for the PSP not good by today's standards, the Mangmi Air X when it was in stock was cheaper than the RP2S, and likely cost as much or possibly less because of the shipping costs. Any good guide or video for completely setting this up? I followed a video a year ago and halfway through the websites/settings were different than what he showed so I couldn’t really follow through. I’m admittedly retarded so I need to be handheld through it all, no pun intended.
>>
>>12039580
If you aren't interested in anything after PS2, the most powerful 4:3 D-pad centric handheld is currently the RG477M. 960p screen that has a high refresh rate IIRC, and the Dimensity 8300 processor means it can play a lot of upscaled PS2/GC games to where the only limitation will be the emulator itself. Very expensive though. Anbernic has an alternative called the 476H which uses the same screen and is D-pad focused too, but it unfortunately has a glass front panel and the chipset used is the standard T820, making it far weaker in comparison and can probably only handle 1X native res for GC/PS2. Ayaneo currently has the Pocket Air Mini coming out soon which will be cheap with a 4.2" 960p screen, but performance will probably top out at 960p Dreamcast at best due to its chipset and low pricepoint. There's also a small company called XU Retro that's working on another sub $100 device called the XU35 H40 with a 4" 960 x 720p screen and a Helio G85, but I've never heard of that brand so its a gamble.
Those are about what I can think of in terms of devices that would probably be a major upgrade from where you're coming from.
>>
>>12039893
thank you for the comprehensive and useful response
>>
how is the experience emulating switch games on one of these higher end devices? As far as the performance, controls, display, gyro etc. Vs just getting a v1 switch? Which would be a good bit cheaper as well ig, but I've never owned or even handled a switch so I have no clue how good the native experience is

I love the retroid pocket classic man.

Its got just enough power to play something like deathsmiles mega black label or shillouete mirage or even sonic heroes.

Can't get more for less than 200 until this year really.

Even still, I'm surprised by some of the compromises ive been made to do, can't run flycast with the accuracy settings despite being powerfully enough to handle mednafene saturn.

had to switch to software rendering for rage racer just so I don't experience any frame drops.

And i can't run melonds with resolution increases and games like mugen frontier exceed will lag to shit with default settings, that and I can't run jaguar although, .jag may just not be a good filetype for retroarchs jaguar core.

Choice paralysis is real so I've added a bunch of games to my "favorites" listing on es-de currently its 3 I'm trying to beat and then hopefully "master" Deathsmiles mega black label outrunners and the first super mario bros.

For deathsmiles right now I go from lv1 until I'm forced into lv2 then after that when I'm forced into lv3 and so on and I've been doing okay with that plan so far since the game doesn't let you stay on lv1 versions for long.

I have been in the Portmaster discord and a lot of the ports are done by asking ChatGPT and other LLMs for advice on how to code something and subsequently running it through them again and again, asking for help from other users and calling it good. Portmaster is a great tool but the community has some issues, in my opinion. Not just the AI usage either.

Can you try to make more sense please?
Are you saying the porters dont know how to port, and must use chatgpt to port them for them?

>>
>>12042623
Some tend to use AI near exclusively to do their ports. Others are content to start ports and abandon them without rhyme or reason. Many are just hooked on buying the newest handhelds and bouncing from device to device. You can tell it is a fully volunteer community.
>>
>>12042625
too vague of an accusation, do you have an axe to grind against someone in particular...

in general there is a workflow already established on what game engines are supported and what tech no use to port them, it is not an esoteric job that is different each time, the game is either compatible with the port runtimes or not, once it runs it has no reason to not work unless you have more insight?

I have had no problem with any ported game, and I have suggested tens of games and only two could be ported because of the flowchart I am telling you about, it is shared often in the Discord, your game either is one of the games from those compatible-portable engines or it wont happen, it is not as if they threw AI at random games to crack them...

NTA where do you see this? There's only a total cart price when you add one of these to a cart.

>>
>>12046908
It's not rocket science. Amazon always has an upcharge, some of them upcharge more than others. Any seller, ANY seller it doesn't matter, will overcharge you for a SD card with some shitty roms on it and it is always a scam because they use the shittiest SD cards in existence and load bullshit roms you're gonna swap out anyway on it. It is always at least 20 bucks, sometimes way more depending on how retarded they think their customers are.

Since tariffs are a thing, they will hide tariffs in the SD card upcharge. Tariffs are generally not 20 fucking dollars for a fucking piece of generic chinkshit, though, so what they will do is hide the tariff charge in with the "cost" of the SD card they paid a nickle for, so their total impact to their profit per unit is like 25 cents (which is meaningless since they're getting an ADDITIONAL 20 bucks of profit off the buyer's retardation, that's all that's impacted so really their profits aren't harmed at all when you think about it like an insect), Your best bet has always been to buy direct and avoid all that shit because the chinks (and to a lesser extent, the russians) have been ducking international shipping laws and agents for decades.

Make sure you do the tape mod on the d-pad contacts or you're going to lose your mind. Put the tape a bit less than half way across each pad and it won't give you false diagonals while also not requiring you to push hard in each direction to register. I did not know they supported EXT4 before, I bet it corrupted much less than FAT32 does. It is unbelievable how often it corrupts if you plug the microSD back into the PC to add games after the first flash of ROMs... it gives you ONE chance to copy roms, after that it corrupts...

Which is ok provided you can use the Anbernic device as USB storage, which is very stable and faster than OnionOS WiFi transfer (capped at 2mB/s)

If you or any anons reading this had a GBA back in the day and played any SNES ports, or wished for specific SNES games to get ported to GBA that never did, the 34XX, 34XX SP, and 35XX SP are a great chance to step into a what-if from 25 years ago. Try playing those SNES games you wish had been ported but never were, or the original SNES versions of those GBA ports from many long moons ago, especially if the soundtracks were particularly mangled in the process or if the ports were just bad in general. Be sure to use a grid overlay to really sell the effect. I did this with Super Mario World recently on my 35XX SP, and it was a pretty cool experience. Here's some other games to try with it.

A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Donkey Kong Country trilogy
Tales of Phantasia
Chrono Trigger
Super Castlevania IV
Mega Man X

Some Genesis games are good candidates for this too, like Sonic the Hedgehog, the Genesis version of Earthworm Jim, or Streets of Rage 2. I also like doing this to NES games on Game Boy clones, especially with a Gameboy Colour border applied.

Yes I am using Linux, and the issue happened both in Linux Mint (Ubuntu) and EndeavourOS (Arch).

I figured last year it was Linux mounting the cards, because these handhelds run on plug and play mountable Linux systems.

I figured that was the case because Windows does not even see the OS partition only the storage one (in the case of Adam{s Image, in Anbernic, for example).

So yeah, I know this is the case, for some reason it gives you one chance to load ROMS before corrupting as if once it has ROMs it creates some config files or some settings regarding contents that get corrupted when mounting it to Linux and being edited.

I wish I knew how to fix it, but I found the work around to be quite simple and easy:

RG280V becomes USB drive activating MTP on the OS menu.

MiyooMiniPlus (for some reason they never activated USB transfer) you can use HTTP and FTP to transfer, for long transfers I reccomend FTP because HTTP won't tell you which transfers failed and you can end up with a bunch of corrupted ROMs. The downside is WIFI is limited to 2MB/s per the WIFI module.

RG35XX Plus allows for USB transfers.

But yeah, I wish I knew how to stop Linux from fucking my cards up.
>>
>>12052157
weird, I'm running Kubuntu and have a TSP with MuOS, and I've shut it down and put the SD in my computer more than once, and it hasn't corrupted.
>>
>>12052178
Weird, it also seems to happen when I am copying more than 100GB at once...

Now I only load about 60GB and the rest (PSX games) through USB or WIFI.

I have no idea why these issues are so esoteric in my side, I do use safe removal and all that..
>>
>>12052185
does it take a long while to unmount? if not your system has a problem. for some shitty reason linux bases the file transfer progress on how much is read, instead of how much is written. so it will say finished once it has the file cached in ram, but might still be minutes before the file is done actually writing.
>>
>>12052195
I leave it transferring at night, that gives it about 4 hours after the last file has been transferred to finished writing, then I expel the card safely and it does it fast.

Otherwise, yeah, I have noticed that... it take a bit after it is "done" to finish writing the last file.
>>
>>12052024
yeah that's pretty much the point of it
>>
>>12052024
The RP5 is basically the best Gen 6 system you can get before you start spending hundreds more on extra premium stuff, I'd recommend it. For low power games I can play it all day without needing a charge so you should be good.

I have run into this kind of issue before and deliberately mount SD cards like this and then use tmux + ranger to move shit over and to make sure shit doesn't fuck up while transferring since you can hit 'w' while in ranger to gauge progress.

It's more with the emulator, but some games are prone to crashes and shader compilation. There's also a minor frame lag that is very noticeable on the Thor, but ironically not on the pocket DS. Well we don't know what the issue with the Thor yet, but on the Odin 2 it was supposedly due to the screen so not fixable. Whatever the Pocket is using is probably a higher refresh screen so the issue isn't as pronounced.

Should I just get the LCD Steam Deck for $320 or is it worth the extra to get an OLED? I already have a smaller retro handheld to take with me places, so this would mostly be playing in bed or taking to a friends house.
>>
>>12057478
OLED is really really good but it highly depends on the games you want to play. $320 for the LCD Steamdeck is a crazy good price though.
>>
>>12057490
Mostly indies, some lighter weight AAA and slightly higher end emulation like Switch, Wii U on top of the usual older stuff.

The main thing I can't decide on is if the extra battery life, 90Hz and slightly larger screen is worth the extra ~$250.
>>
>>12057478
OLED has better response times, so if you're playing reaction-based games you probably want that. If you're playing RPGs the LCD is fine.
>>

OLED steam deck is good but not $250 extra good. Steam decks have good value after market and at this point we're a few years away from the next steam deck generation. >Retroon included bcuz why not. Despite being overkill for what that anon wants
Shartui really needs better shills. The dumbo and brick makes it look like miyoo mini fags play games.

I was so close to order a handheld, had researched for weeks. Then I realised I would only play at home anyway so it would be idiotic since I can just emulate on my desktop or laptop instead. I was so close to be seduced by the hathelders.

Can't decide between 35XX and 40XX. Please someone decide for me.

>don't listen to retards who shill anbernig 40xxh with it's 640x480 resolution
are you seriously recommending 16:9 over 4:3 for emulating PS1 and below?
>>

NTA, but I'd pick 16:9 any time of the day, specially in this day and age when there's widescreen patches/cheats and the like.
But even then, 4:3 games look fine on 16:9 screens. Can't say the same for 16:9 games on 4:3 screens though, and if you get that itch of emulating PS2, PSP or whatever and decided to go for the 4:3 screen then you're screwed.

>didn't even bother saying they'd fix it. Expected people to just shut up and buy the Odin 2 Portal instead
>Ayn acknowledged the latency issues with the Thor when people brought it up
Hmmm...

incorrect
>if you get that itch of emulating PS2, PSP or whatever
so, sacrifice PS1, SNES, Genesis etc looking better because you might want PS2/PSP on a cheap chinkheld? No

The anbernic dual screen is the last hope for this meme. I don't know how well t620 does 3ds compared to t820, but their reps confirmed linux versions.
