Pole position, outrun, hang-on, and all their clones were driving games. Ridge racer was a racing game. I'm on the fence with the midway cruisin' series, but leaning toward driving because crashing into traffic is what usually fucks you over, assuming you ever had a chance against the ai to begin with.

Beat Em Ups.2D Beat Em Ups are not good. They're a product of wanting games where you move in pseudo-3D space and beat people up without having the technology to make it fun.The advent of true 3D, and the evolution of the Beat Em Up into games like Devil May Cry and God Hand, saved the genre.

Racing simulation is the only genre which really got improved on modern hardware. It's much more realistic, however that doesn't mean it's more fun.
