…and I’m looking for any good info on people’s opinions for emulators and roms. Specifically, w the new VB headset coming out I’d really like to play the library on the 3DS (I had one as a kid and loved it, I was only allowed to play video games at other people’s houses so getting a virtual boy was huge to me) plus I’d love to just fill it up w retro games and I read the N3ds is more powerful than previous versions so I’m wondering how high up can it go for emulation. Also retro emulation thread. What are your top emulated games (even if you mostly use og hardware, hell especially if you use og hardware what and why are you emulating). Personally I’ve been stuck on the desert temple of OoT because of a health condition I’ve been in bed a lot recently so the N3ds is hopefully perfect since I can’t move to much or sit up to long so I plan on playing the 3d OoT for comparison and going back and finishing the original once I’m recovered.
Oh I guess I should also ask: what is the best flashcart I can get for this thing? I see AliExpress has several different options and I’ve not had any issues so far w their summercart so any advice would be appreciated
>>12038000It sucks dick for emulation beyond Virtual Boy and 3rd gen systems. Can barely play PS1 games, and even SNES9x is trash on it. At least the native port plays great and looks nice in 3D.>>12038005It doesn't need flashcarts. Just hack it.
>>12038020*native port of Super Mario 64
>>12038000>>12038005First off, you don't need a flash cart. You just need to supply your own microSD card, so when you mod the 3DS you can just add ROMs from your computer either wirelessly via FTP or just plugging it in with an SD adapter. You could *technically* use any microSD size you want, but the 3DS was only meant to handle 32GB and anything after 64-128GB or so causes the 3DS to hang while loading at times. When you mod the 3DS, you can get any 3DS game/app on demand with hShop and Ghost eShop for DS games. You can also download any Virtual Console game on hShop if you prefer to play those over using non-official emulation, but they only have the games Nintendo selected after all. Universal-Updater also lets you install homebrew apps like emulators ported to the 3DS.As for what works, I only ever had the New 3DS XL so I'm not sure if the older model is a different story. It caps out at SNES, and even then struggles with Super FX chip games at times. Anything after that like the N64 and PlayStation is probably a bust. As for Virtual Boy, I only ever played Virtual Boy Wario Land on it, but I had no issues. The emulator was called Red Viper, and you can find it like every other emulator ported to the 3DS like Snes9x through the Universal-Updater.There's also some ports that >>12038020 >>12038021 mentioned that you could also try. SM64, Doom, Fallout 1&2, Yume Nikki, etc. One last thing, the 3DS also natively supports GBA games and will run them without emulation if you're interested, but you need to use open_agb_firm from the Universal-Updater. The games will have to be loaded from a mod menu you have to hold the Start button to boot into when turning the device on though.Just Google "3DS Hacks Guide" and the first option will take you through everything. Hope this helps.
>>12038005>what is the best flashcart I can get for this thing? You don't need a flashcart at all. All you need is a decently sized microSD to hold everything you'll use (32GB to 128GB are recommended. DO NOT use an SD card larger than 128GB, it can cause problems), and an adapter to transfer files from your PC to your microSD card (once hacked you can transfer files to your 3DS wirelessly with FTPD)You don't even need a flashcart for OG DS games, you can play those from your SD card too via TWiLight Menu++You can also play GBA ROMs from your SD card natively (no emulation) because of the DS hardware that's in the 3DS via open_agb_firm. >I’m wondering how high up can it go for emulationPS1 is the most demanding console you can emulate at full speed, using PCSX ReARMed. Remember to convert your PS1 games to CHD files so they play at full speed
>>12038058>because of the DS hardware that's in the 3DS Which I forgot to mention contains GBA hardware
>>12038020>Can barely play PS1 games>>12038038>PlayStation is probably a bustWith the latest version of PCSX ReARMed and your games converted to CHD you can play a lot of PS1 games at full speed on a New3DS (not on an OG3DS though). I've played Resident Evil 3 and Ridge Racer Type 4 at full speed on my N2DSXL
>>12038061I always figured there'd be slowdown on most games. I don't know if that's the same emulator I used, but I just remember CTR kept crashing when I tried it a few years ago. Maybe I'll try it again. Regardless, I'm not sure if OP has a New 3DS or not to support that.
>>12038067The emulation isn't perfect but it can run a decent amount of games at full speed. Will try CTR actually
>>12038000My opinion is you’re a retard.
>>12038000you got scammed. you should have waited and bought an AYN Thor
>>12038067>>12038071Alright, just tried CTRI've finished a race in adventure mode and it hasn't crashed, though it doesn't run at full speed (at least on default settings) dunno if it's possible to make it run at full speed by messing with the core settingsKinda funny it struggles because Ridge Racer 4 runs at full speed and it's one of the most visually impressive games on the PS1. CTR probably struggles because it runs at a higher internal res
>>12038038>>12038020Thanks for the information. I’m really shocked this thing (I got the smaller version but I believe the guts are the exact same) won’t be able to do 64 but there are plenty of 64 ports so no big deal. Yea, ideally I’d like to be able to play VB w red viper like you suggested and anything snes genesis and older. I was hoping it would be able to handle 32x and CD… but it sounds like this thing won’t make it that far. Yea I’ll def be getting everything I can off the eshop like you said I’m sure I’ll have plenty of gems on there. Kinda sucks it can’t do psx so I’m assuming it can’t do any Saturn. Maybe I should snag a psp vita for psx n64 and Saturn emulation? Maybe I should’ve just gotten a steam deck but I wanted the 3d effect and it’s the special edition (pic in my first post) Zelda one so, if I get the Zelda SP I’ll have all 3 gold systems that I’ve wanted (I love goooooooooold). But yeah I’m looking forward to replaying VB Wario land on it. Did you enjoy Wario land in the 3ds and had you ever played it originally?
>>12038061>>12038067Yes I did get the NEW 3ds (the Zelda special edition in the pic) so that’s encouraging to hear that psx is functional and you can finish games on it. I wouldn’t mind going back through the final fantasy games and there are def some games I missed growing up because I had a 64 (I still managed to play most of the big titles because my buddy had the psx and I’ve definitely beaten way more games on a ps2 than a psx as far as original PlayStation games go so BC was huge for me missing out on some classics at the time). Either way, I’m liking what I’m reading. Anything on Saturn emulation?
>>12038213Anon, the 3DS in the pic is a 3DS XL, not a NEW 3DS XL. Are you sure?
>>12038021Wii U have original OoT port
>>12038201>Kinda sucks it can’t do psx so I’m assuming it can’t do any Saturn. Maybe I should snag a psp vita for psx n64 and Saturn emulation?I can't imagine the PS Vita would be much better for Saturn performance, the Sega Saturn is notoriously difficult to emulate in general. It will also probably struggle with half of the N64 library as well. It does have perfect PSX emulation, though. I got my N3DSXL, DSi XL, and PS Vita for the purpose of playing games meant for those platforms, because emulation for those is either underdeveloped like the Vita, or in the case of the DS just kind of unpleasant to use on anything but original hardware. Being able to play NES games on them occasionally is just a bonus. You'd probably be better off getting a dedicated emulation handheld or a Steam Deck if your goal is to have a handheld that will play a lot of everything. /hhg/ will shill a bunch of options, one of the best value to performance devices is the Retroid Pocket 5. It's like $220 and it's the size of a PS Vita vs $400+ for a Steam Deck which is more than double the size of one. It can emulate up to PS2 perfectly with 2x resolution and can even handle some light Switch emulation. There's a hundred other options including much cheaper <$50 ones if you just want to play up to PSX, but that's just an example.Virtual Boy Wario Land was also surprisingly good, but it's pretty short. You do unlock the best ending by beating it in 90 minutes or less after all. It's about on par with the GBC Wario Land games and I enjoyed my time with it. I never played it on original hardware though. It was the only Virtual Boy game I had interest in playing (other than Jack Bros that I haven't gotten around to yet) so no need to splurge $400 on one anytime soon.
>>12038005>what is the best flashcart I can get for this thing? The best one is not manufactured anymore, so just get the cheapest ntrboot-capable one, for hacking/unbricking and the ~1% of the stuff that doesn't work with TwilightMenu++https://www.flashcarts.net/ds-quick-start-guide>>12038213>Yes I did get the NEW 3ds (the Zelda special edition in the pic)That's an o3DS, not a N3DS. Forget about any meaningful emulation other than GBA.
>>12038271Yea I’m an idiot I bought the wrong one and I can’t return it. I just got a little gift of money and my dumbass apparently can’t read. >>12038345I hear ya. I’ll probably end up getting the retroid 5 then. What are your thoughts on the Odin? I bring it up because I’ve seen it mentioned in the handhelds thread? The only issue then becomes, I definitely want the 3d and it’s the only portable that does it, afaikYea, I’m curious how Wario will play on the DS but on og hardware it was fun. My complaints weren’t the redness it was the damn foam pushing into my face that got annoying. I had no idea the game was so short but I don’t think I ever beat it, just really enjoyed it especially since I had literally nothing else.>>12038363Yup gonna have to find a cheap used one. As I said above, I’m an idiot and just saw the gold and went yup I want that one. Wish I could return it but the seller doesn’t accept returns so maybe I can resell it and snag one.
>>12038363Just curious, what was the best flash cart? Yeah I know u don’t need it but I’m just curious.
>>12038000Just put retroarch on that bitch
A New 3DS is pretty good for emulation, just out of my mnid I can think of:>nes>snes>SOME N64 but honestly everything worthwhile was already ported>SOME PS1 games with the right settings>gb, gbc, gba>nds>virtual boy>neo geo pocket and color>wonderswan and ws color>pc engine and PC-E CD>sega master system, genesis, 32x, sega CD>some computers like the amiga>some worthwhile DOS games>>12038020>even SNES9x is trash on itLiterally everything I have tried there has worked perfectly. And when it doesn't, you can inject via Virtual Console. What game did you try?
The 3DS sucks ass for emulation. It also isn't retro.
It sucks that even with all the decomps of the last few years, basically no ports were fully made for consoles (portable or not).
>>12038623>Wish I could return it but the seller doesn’t accept returns so maybe I can resell it and snag one.You can always flip the 3DS in this age. You can thank YouTubers singing its praises for keeping prices up. Since it's a collectable edition, I'm sure you could still probably sell it for a little more than you bought it and break even after eBay fees.>What are your thoughts on the Odin?I don't own any, but they're manufactured by AYN, which is a brand that is heavily implied to be under the same company that owns Retroid, Moorechip. You can tell because they will use the same parts for things sometimes. They basically serve as a more premium Retroid and usually have similar products but with better chips and parts that cost ~$100 more. The AYN Odin 2 Portal for example plays a majority of the Switch library and can handle more resolution upscaling compared to the RP5. However, I don't play Switch a lot and it's not a big enough jump to spend $100+ more in my opinion, especially when they're in the $350 range after shipping and Steam Decks can be bought for $50 more at that point. Also, the Odin 2 Portal is about the size of a Steam Deck compared to the smaller base Odin 2 that's less powerful, so it seems redundant to me.I will say though, AYN is making a DS emulation handheld that looks very promising called the AYN Thor. It has OLED 60hz screens, actual thumbsticks, and the base model has the same performance as the RP5. It starts at $250, which is around the same price N3DSXLs go for, and more expensive models use Odin chips with more storage and RAM. No 3D though, and the resolution isn't perfect for DS so expect some pillarboxing. Also, Retroid made a similar flip handheld that has only one screen that came under fire for having a hinge that was prone to cracking. They claimed to have fixed it for future batches, but we'll see. If they're owned by the same company, there's a chance they might use the same hinges, so just a heads up.
>>12039335Appreciate all the info. Yeah I may have to try and flip this special edition to snag the N3ds. That’s interesting so the company seems to be competing w itself or maybe it’s a Honda/Acura situation. I really want the 3d tho because of the VB stuff is what kicked off the interest but I’ll keep a look out on the Thor and checkout the others.>>12038725Thanks for your input. We’re only talking about as a retro emulation machine but your bump is appreciated.

>>12038201Sega CD and 32X work fine on 3DS, here's someone testing ithttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrkP6pprq5M>>12038005I just used a R4. Other anons told you to skip but I prefer having DS games on a separate SD card and having something in the cart slot. Also a good way to get over the 128GB limit if you like to hoard
>>12039542I do have an r4 laying around I think. I may do that, good suggestion!
>>12038628http://www.r4ids.cn/r4ids-e.htmAll green carts in the "R4I Gold 3DS Pictures" section (scroll from the bottom up)The red "Plus" one was even better initially (3DS ntrboot preflashed, with a switch), but their last batch was defective:https://www.flashcarts.net/ds-quick-start-guide?tab=non-recommended#r4i-gold-3ds-plusWhat's now sold with "Wood v1.62" is a fork of an extremely old version of the real Wood kernel, not even remotely close to v1.64 of the real thing. In practice this means you'll have to use anti-piracy patches (cheats) with several games that the real Wood 1.64 supports as is (clean dumps, no cheats or patches necessary).
Do note the .cn domain. There's a very similar cart with a .com domain that's ntrboot-capable on the market right now which is a bit pricier than its other .com'rades, and the price is not worth it because they are identical. Just avoid the cheapest .com.cn and .hk ones, these don't support ntrboot at all (neither the 3DS version, nor the DSi version).
>>12038038>ff7 with mouths enabled
>>12038020This.It is pretty good for 3DS and DS games by hacking it and using Twilight Menu for the DS side of it and looking up guides on how to use FBI and Godmode9
damn this place is helpful
>>12040072>>12039716>>12039706I appreciate all the info. I’ll definitely look into it. I got a cheap flash cart off AliExpress just to fuck around w but I will mod it and throw a real micro sd in it for sure. I won’t expect my saves to last on the flash cart but it was like 7 dollars on Ali so fuck it.
>>12039794Gotta be a mod for the pc version right? Speaking of which, what is everyone playing via emulation right now?
>>12039794pc version has the mouths for some reason
Was 3DS the last real retro system?
