Everyone, but Nightdive. You would think that by 2025 people will stop treating any company as their friend, but instead you see plenty of nutjobs thanking Nightdive and defending them like it's their beloved family member.
Such loyalty won't last forever, but it does make you wonder what will be the turning point for them.

They'd have to seriously fuck something up hard since they're forgiving of stuff like the Blade Runner and Fresh Supply shit, and are even thanking them right now for the chance to preorder a patch with community mods to bulk it out.
>>
>>12063892
Well for me, it's not that black and white. They are not my friends, but they are not personally my arch enemies either. Just a company with either good or shit products. If they make good remasters, I buy. If they make shitty remasters, I won't buy. This new Blood goes to shit category. Turok 3 and RotT were good since there were no viable alternatives to play them on modern PCs. All Bethesda ones, I got for free, so didn't need to use my money for those. Liked the new expansions, but Nightdive didn't make the Quake ones (it was Machinegames).

Huh.

Anyway, I remember shooting Xaser a message on Doomworld maybe a year ago, and he said "Oh yeah, maybe I should fix the VM Abort in Zen Dynamics." but I guess he never got around to doing that.
I saw someone here say that there was a fix someone else made? I'd love for you to share it, Zen Dynamics is very much a demonstration project more than anything, cobbled together from other people's leftovers, but it was actually pretty good, too.
>>
>>12063892
How much tylenol his mother took for him to be this retarded and a self-centered prick?

>>12063901
Blade Runner's case was literally the ScummVM community acting like faggots towards all sides and Nightdive's ego.

>>12063898
Aspyr is cursed.
They gave TR and SR to literal autistic fans who delivered, then they gave Deus Ex to indians.
Still the TR Remasters are easy to mod as SR since raina's tism made sure everything from SR1 and 2 was added into the mix and OL+TR Forums people made sure everything was moddable.
>>
>>12063916
Xaser has a very bad habit of abandoning his projects:
-Hacx 2.0
-Epoch
-The last map he decided to contribute for Stomper, but years later decided that fuck it and Stomper was left unfinished
-D2TWiD:LE, even thought it has dozens of maps by different mappers waiting for release

I like his work, but god damn the guy needs to finish what the promises to do.

This one isn't very hard either, and honestly this was just an excuse for me to play more Osiris, but I'm happy the Wicked Witch is gone.
As with last time, doing it with fast monsters is optional, but welcomed.
>>
>>12063842
There exists Daisy player skin
>>
>>12063892
As an early Nightdive detractor I've enjoyed seeing the goodwill turn but unfortunately its not fast enough to stop the damage it's going to do to retro shooters.

Locking mods behind "remasters" in the guise of "keeping interests for the IP alive" for WB to make mobile live service games for (Monolith is defunct) is something I thought more people would see the bullshit in.
>>
>>12063943
Maybe they interpreted it as that? I have seen people get their posts wiped for when they get b& for illegal shit, so they do it for other things besides spamming.

>>12064008
How "locked" is it actually though? Unless they manage to somehow quash piracy of DOS games (good luck lmao) then they'll never have full control.
>>
>>12063898
>As long as the only other big remaster studio is Aspyr with their janky AI slop
Modern Digital Eclipse are more about re-releases, but they're the best as far as I can tell. Would've been nice to see them handle just any FPS game, even though they're all about emulation.
There's also Limited Run Games... Fuck. This shit sucks. General Arcade isn't specifically a re-release/remaster group, but they done some stuff too. All the rest are situational.
>The instant they get competent competition this will stop.
That's just piece of a puzzle. It won't be just a competition, but Nightdive's growing hubris doing its thing.
>>12063901
>They'd have to seriously fuck something up hard
True. And when they do, all that was forgiven will be back for dogpilling.
>>12063903
>Well for me, it's not that black and white.
I'm sure some people there are great. Some of its work isn't great, but give credit where its due to Quake 2 and DOOM 64. I guess you can I'm balancing it out general perception with more negative attitude
>Turok 3
The lack of multiplayer and their attitude towards Rage Wars are very telling. I'm sure Nightdive will take on Quake 3 Arena if id asks them very nicely, but if Heretic+Hexen is anything to go by... I hope they don't.
>>12063920
>They gave TR and SR to literal autistic fans who delivered
That was Saber (Russian branch, I believe), actually. All of those autistic fans were hired by them for Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain back when Saber was with Embracer and they then kept ongoing deal.
>>
>>12064008
>something I thought more people would see the bullshit in
The target audience of these remasters is zoomers who get fake nostalgia for games they've never played from the e-celebs they watch, but are too dumb or lazy to use sourceports. You'll never get complaints out of them because they don't know any better and probably don't care enough to learn.
Most people who played these games when they came out either aren't playing them anymore (or gaming at all), or are comfortable using sourceports and don't interact with these remasters on any level - including to point out how shit they are.
>>
>>12064030
That's a lot of projection and made up assumptions
>>
>>12064030
I'm not gonna say you're entirely wrong, but you aren't entirely right either, I see older people who played these games back in the day get roped in too.
>>
>>12063943
The guy went on pne of his bi-monthly schizphrenic breakdowns and straight up said he was baking generals with the Mm8dm pic incouded just to spite everyone and hadn't even played it himself, then taunted everyone and the moderation about how they couldn't do anything. It may not be "spam" but the reason for deletion is obvious.
>>
So when is SIN Reloaded coming out?
>>
>>12064030
I just like the remasters with new campaigns, the ones for Doom 64, Quake and Hexen were pretty good
>>
>>12064039
Given that he latched on to and griped about the evil oppression of poor innocent little Sarais early on, do you think it was just him being a turbofag for the sake of it all along?
Both are anti-social drug addicts after all.
>>
>>12064040
Right after Episode 2.
>>
>>12064042
Or maybe he actually did that just because he knew we hated it. I guess I shouldn't assume that quickly.
>>
>>12064038
>I see older people who played these games back in the day get roped in too.
Yeah I know people who still have copies from the 90s, and absolutely ought to know better but are still begging for Nightdive to re-release crap, even stuff like Shadow Warrior that already has a functional fucking re-release on top of plenty of sourceports.
>>
>>12064063
I'm just glad that there is still interest in these old games even though I don't play them much

Isn't Shadow Warrior classic redux really buggy as well?
>>
>>12064042
>>12064039
It's probably the same anon who thinks he's doing internet activism and only ever showed up in these threads to fight the invisible iron fist of the janitors or something like that.
>>
>>12064008
Double standards with Nightdive's fans are very amusing. Blaming corporations for business practices Nightdive endorses through collaboration and lament about Aspyr and Deus Ex while actively advocating for monopoly by hoping that any FPS remasters is done by one company.
At the end, people will willingly default back to originals.
>>12064030
>The target audience of these remasters is zoomers who get fake nostalgia for games they've never played from the e-celebs they watch
Not always the e-celebs. Inspiration sometimes comes from other places like childhood and such. That's how it mostly was for a retarded zoomer like me.
>>12064037
No, anon totally has a point.
>>12064040
How much in total it took them to get System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster? Approximately 6-7 years? Considering that SiN is a similar situation where Nightdive owns the IP and how things going right now, I would give it another 2-3 years from now.
Reloaded was at first supposed to be out in 2021, meaning it probably had at least a year of development by the point of announcement in 2020. It probably started development around the same time as SS2, but who knows for sure.
>>
>>12064068
>Isn't Shadow Warrior classic redux really buggy as well?
It got an update a few years back that fixed a bunch of the significant issues like underground mines.
>>
>>12064074
Tbf Aspyr is dropping the ball on this one.
I don't love or hate nightdive though. They've had their share of fuck ups and successes.
>>
>>12064027
Did General Arcade do Chasm The Rift? I think they did a pretty good job with that one
>>
How many remasters are even there left for Nightdive to do?

>Quake III
>Dark Forces II
>actually trying to fix Blood II
>Hexen II with the expansion
>Terminator Future Shock and Skynet
>Daikatana
>Blake Stone
>Alien Trilogy
>Requiem Avenging Angel
>Wheel of Time
>Descent Series
>Mechwarrior series
>Tekwar or Witchaven for the memes
>some console FPS like Disruptor, Medal of Honor or Alien Resurrection

Most of these are probably unlikely because of licensing
>>
>>12064074
It's funny System Shock 2 took them so long when System Shock Enhanced was one of their first projects
>>
>>12064087
They'll pad it out with awful ones like Neves of Steel and Isle of the Dead, and obviously they're already into remastering their own remasters.
>>
>>12064091
>when System Shock Enhanced was one of their first projects
Allegedly they cannibalized System Shock Portable to get that out so quickly, then DMCA'd SSP.
>>
>>12064087
I would unironically buy a South Park port.
>>
>>12064030
As someone who hasn't finished any retro shooters (except for Half-Life and Goldeneye) until a year ago it has been fun to catch up with all the classics. I'm also happy people are still playing these games and there has been also a resurgence of various retro style shooters. It sure beats the era when everyone was trying to rip off CoD.
>>
>>12064087
Hexen 2 would be actually nice since it has non-existant modding scene. I'd enjoy a new mission pack for it.

Then they could do Duke Nukem 3d, just to get a new 6th episode. At least it couldn't be a worse port than World Tour. But since Gearbox still holds the rights and is gayer than Nightdive, I doubt it'll happen.
>>
>>12064087
They'll probably end up doing more full remakes like with System Shock. Depending on how this Blood situation goes, they might even try double-dipping on their earlier remasters and use console ports as an excuse.
>>
>>12064113
>Duke Nukem 3d
Megaton Edition with the official expansions is all you need, it just isn't on sale anymore
>>
>>12064085
Well to be fair Chasm community (if it exists at all) is nowhere near as autistic about the authenticity, so maybe a lot of small bugs might just go unnoticed, meanwhile nothing goes unnoticed past the Doom/Build community.
>>
>>12064118
Megaton is overrated. Sure it's a better port than World Tour, but it certainly didn't have all expansions. Eduke is the best way to play Duke. I'd only want a new remaster to get a new expansion. More Duke is always good.

I won't be surprised if they skip straight to Heretic 2 simply because there's more profit for it. You don't need to "suffer loses" to Bethesda's generosity for Game Pass fodder when there's no barebone original version of the game up for sale already.
>>12064091
To be fair, it's also logical. If you own the IP, you have full control over time management. That's why its been so neglected for years.
>>12064127
>Kingpin Reloaded
That got fucked over by Interplay, 3D Realms with its awful attention span and Embracer bullshit. Although Interplay did get slow patching going recently for what its worth.
Considering Kingpin Reloaded had five developers working on it in total, you can argue that end result is actually kind of impressive if you have desire to be charitable.

Can those be played in the other Doom 64 ports yet?

I was doing it for a while, in the extremely foolish hope that maybe he was legit and maybe it'd placate him, but I completely lost my patience with him before it even dawned on me that he was completely bullshitting and trolling, hence I said Fuck It.

I am actually more in favor of the approach people discussed earlier, to just link to Clovr for the recs, and then maybe have just a starter "brochure" for how to get the base game running.

>>
I got excited that I found a bug in Chocolate Doom but apparently it's been known for 8 years.

There's a sector type 10 which closes 30 seconds after the map starts. It's used in a secret in map27. In vanilla, if you run to the secret and stand under the door as it closes at 30 seconds, it will reopen and keep going up and eventually the game will crash. But this doesn't happen consistently, because the behavior depends on unitialized memory.
Chocolate Doom is supposed to reproduce all vanilla bugs but apparently reproducing a stochastic crash that could lead to security issues was too much for them.
Honestly at this point DOS emulation is so good and comfy that I don't see much point in Chocolate Doom anymore

I have also found a bug and idk if it needs fix. Check out this in chocolate vs dos. https://files.catbox.moe/81btwy.wad I kinda don't want it to be fixed because I wanna be able to abuse this effect in vanilla wads to create horizons, but I think it will be eventually.

I actually enjoyed a couple of the remasters, notably Quake 2 for the enemy improvements, fast weapon swap and an easy way to play the expansions.
Naturally it has a bunch of problems, like that awful lighting system, a nerfed railgun, machinegames somehow getting political over Quake 2 of all things (we all know it's not a coincidence there are no Iron Maidens in CotM) and the usual lame green cross health, but generally it's not bad.

Damn. This is a pipe dream, but I hope they decide to just say "fuck it" and officially include it in an update since it's all ready and done. Still, I'm kind of jealous they gave more love to Quake 2 anyway instead of Quake 1's remaster.
>Quake 1: HD models for the original game's weapons and enemies, actually packing the OST with the game unlike the original Steam release, and restoring Dismal Oubliette's length, but they didn't do the same for the weapons and enemies in the expansions; Dimension of the Machine also only uses the base weapon/enemy rosters, Dimension of the Past was also included as Machine Games jacking themselves off, and Quake 64 is relegated to an addon.
>Quake 2: Same as with Quake 1 but with:
>Remastered lighting.
>Weapon rebalances (however unwanted they are).
>New enemy behavior.
>Giving this treatment to the expansions' content, including restoring the Disruptor from Ground Zero.

Nothing says "we do this for preservation" more than Nightdive leaving "Stop asking us about Rage Wars" in the credits of their Turok 3 remaster.
>>12065856
At this point, I feel like most devs at Nightdive just don't like PSX version of Quake 2 and just don't add it out of spite. They added fucking Sigil 2 into a proper list of campaigns for DOOM + DOOM 2, so it's not like they're not capable.
>>
>>12065882
At least they put Q64 campaign. Both are better than the PC campaign.
>>
>>12065882
Nightdive might be egoistical bastards, but this is not on Nightdive (hell the campaign was finished by Nightdive member on his free time). And not even on Bethesda. It's the console policy combined with how Q2 engine is. Technically the blame is also on Carmack by making the engine dependant of dll files. Doom 1+2 has different engine than Q2 so it's not really comparable. Sigil 2 deserves it's official expansion status though. For me it's the episode 6.

They're definite improvements over vanilla. I consider them more 'sidegrades' compared to how the expansions improved enemies. Switchspeed is different: I had my fill with mods and the remaster and can enjoy going back to the standard switchspeed now.

I probably won't do more Osiris challenges (for now), given that we're heading to October really soon and people wanted to do Halloween stuff, but I feel like I actually want to just play through Osiris myself, I forgot how fun and moody it was. It does a lot with relatively little, and Jeremy Doyle's music does so much for the atmosphere.

I wonder, did Osiris actually inspire Powerslave? It's a continuation of I, ANUBIS, which was from 1995. Maybe Glen and Marshal saw Powerslave in magazines and got some inspirations from that to build more upon I, ANUBIS to make Osiris?

The very original one was because some obsessive anon yeeted two other mods out to replace with the most masturbatory writeup ever. Change tends to piss people off anyway but doing it like that caused a lot of shit.

Based on the time I've taken a look at it myself before, it's pretty much the desolate wasteland of the Classic Doom community. There's a bit of memeing about running the game on various things, but very sparse discussion of playing the game itself.

I think maybe there are some other Doom subreddits, smaller ones, which are more about the classic games and their modding, but the overall Classic Doom fandom already had its well established nests before Reddit ever took off the ground, and people never felt a need to emigrate from them, thus r/Doom is only where people who are nothing bu Redditors go, thus the state of it.
There's legit way more discussion about Classic Doom on Discord, be that some larger servers, servers dedicated to certain mods, or smaller and private servers.

Q2's mapping scene was basically dead save for few people like Quakeulf, before the remaster generated so much more interest that Map-Center became a thing. Vanilla Quake 2 has had less than 30 map sets released between 2000 and 2025. That's less than the amount of Doom wads that have got released during one of Doom's least active "dying" years like 1999 or 2000. Remaster itself has received already more than 15 good map packs after it's 2023 release. Comparing those numbers makes me see Nightdive with Q2 more as good than bad thing. It's less about stealing the modder base, and more about making the game more attractive modders since almost nobody was interested modding the vanilla (were you?). Now since CotV gave whole Q1 beastiary and 30 other creatures for modders, I see zero reason to go back to vanilla modding.

It's pretty decent like GDX. It might be worthwhile if you have something against managing separate sourceports for each Build game, but I found enjoying Raze and VoidSW the most for Shadow Warrior. Haven't tried it much with Duke, Blood, or Redneck Rampage.

Obviously i'm in the minority given switch sales, but why? Any handheld is not going to give the controls a desktop/kbm would, and even if someone was okay with a simpler control set, why a locked down switch instead of hardware you actually control?
The only draw I can understand is if you want to play nintendo exclusive games and don't like emulation?

As for the root of the discussion, it's probably a net benefit that nightdive is remastering these games, but I personally will choose more appropriate and 'free' source ports over another closed "mimic" engine.

>Technically the blame is also on Carmack by making the engine dependant of dll files.
Carmack rightfully realized that using native DLLs for Q2 was a mistake. That's why Q3 uses QVMs. And if Nightdive weren't lazy bastards they should have done the same. They were breaking mod compatibility already, so why not take one extra step and put game code in VM? Plain C is piss easy to virtualize. No, they chose to rewrite it in C++ for some bullshit reason instead, which means Q2 is stuck with unsafe non-portable DLLs forever (with C++ bloat now!).

There's nothing wrong with opengl for eduke. The reason Vulkan/DX12 came along was primarily for high performance multithreaded control - opengl ties a render context to a specific CPU thread, and you have to rely on more driver code for data transfers, synchronisation, etc. None of that matters here.

I think you're confusing some terms here. "UV-fast" is all kills and secrets with -fast enabled, "UV-speed" is clearing the level as fast as possible (other games usually call it any%). Kinda poor naming scheme, but that's hot it goes. Also, I think it'd be best as a rule from now to avoid picking the same wad twice.

For repeats, I assume that two in a row is the issue, otherwise we've occasionally done different maps from Plutonia and Valiant.
Having not touched Osiris in many years, I actually greatly enjoyed it, so I think that I'm just going to play it for myself, and I'm gonna do so with fast monsters I think, then maybe I'll pick one of the other levels for a fast monsters challenge after October.

Good run by the way, you should submit it, given that Osiris doesn't have runs for most levels.

FFFFFFFFUCK. At least the existing Halloween Jams have some neat atmospheric levels. Spooktober for Doom is also a thing, and while it has a bad reputation a handful of the levels are actually fun too. Then there's Ad Mortem, which doesn't quite feel Halloweeny enough for me (it lacks that certain cheese) but it's a good mapset so whatever.

They can do that when they want it to. Otherwise it's "staying true to the game" bullshit that's quite laughable when you account for the whole picture with their output.

I meant we should avoid doing 2 in a row, yeah. Although variety in general is the goal. You could theoretically pick 2 different wads in a row, but if they're really similar it would still feel monotonous.

I considered submitting my demos, but since I recorded using nugget-doom, they technically aren't permitted under competition rules anymore and might therefore be more hassle than it's worth to add. I don't think every wad needs to be table filled necessarily.

From what I can tell VoidSW is functionally abandoned, it gets like 3-4 nothingburger commits per year from a single guy who worked on Redux.
Five years later it's still not possible to set an offset for a custom statusbar, so it's still not possible to have a widescreen statusbar. So if you want a statusbar, your only option is picrel abominations.

What's even more annoying is that EDuke32 (which is right next to VoidSW exe file) have a borderless statusbar now. I don't like it because it offsets the weapon way too low, but the fact that the basic feature that could've been added to both sourceports only got added to EDuke32 despite the fact that you can't even download one source port without the other tells quite a lot.

additional question: i'm using fresh supply to dw (i know, i know). it appears to only loads the maps in isolation. i get the credits each time i finish an episode, it doesn't flow like a campaign is expected to. is that normal in shit like nBlood or does fresh supply just suck for addons like this?
>>
>>12067817
Works fine eduke with stopgap.
>>
>>12068013
That's why I said it's easier, not that it's impossible with EDuke32.
With Stopgap you need too keep the whole Randiversary Edition game somewhere, which is like 1GB+ of bloat you don't need, while with Raze it's a single 100mb GRP file that has nothing but the new episode itself and can be used just like any other GRP file.
>>
>>12068007
>it appears to only loads the maps in isolation

I'm gonna need clarification because you're kinda giving me mixed signals here: Are you seeing the credits after playing multiple maps, or are you seeing it each time you finish a map?

i finished e1, i get credits and dumped to main menu. same thing with e2. if i play it in something like nblood, is it smart enough to chain the maps together so that it doesn't immediately go to credits and goes to the next correct map?

A dog would be better, but that would be a bummer. Rabbits are cute but no one cares about them as much as cats or dogs. so seeing one impaled - or seeing tons get lit up in Shadow Warrior - isn't much of a downer.
