I found out that the theme song for Space Battleship Yamato is part of Simpsons Doom.

I love Doom 64 but cutting revenants and archviles really hamstrung its potential

I get cartridge space was an issue on N64 and cuts had to be made, but who the FUCK thought adding THIS STUPID FAGGOT in instead of revenants or archviles was a good idea? Of all the fucking doom 2 enemies they pick the worst one. Hell, I would have taken revenants and archviles over arachnotrons and mancubi too.

Overall I like Doom more, although Quake has a different balance - you have to keep on your toes pretty much all the time, because any enemy can fuck you up in close quarters (except those flying torsos). While in Doom you can just dance around most enemies.

That's a quirk of Quake's damage system. With melee attacks, you get damaged as long as you're in contact with the enemy's 3D model, even if their animation hasn't properly started or ended it. For example, the knights with swords - they start to damage you as soon as they raise their swords, even if they're nowhere near your level, and the damage is continuous even if they only slash once. What happened with the Fiend that stomped you is that his attack normally pushes you back, but since he landed on top of you, you couldn't be pushed away and his model applied damage many times per second, insta-killing you.

That's only true with the fiend and the spawn. Both of them do damage via a *touch* function that can potentially be called every frame that they remain in contact with you. The spawn at least has the condition that its velocity needs to be over 400 in order to damage you. The fiend can very much instakill you if its touch function isn't nullified by reaching a grounded state.
Knights and other melee monsters simply do a limited distance traceline to their *enemy* entity followed by an application of damage if the trace is complete. In the case of the knight this is done for most of the frames in their melee animation, so it's possible to only take some of the potential damage depending on your movements.

I think the problem with Slipseer (outside of Fairweather trying to run the place as some weird cult of personality) is they all seem to have some Magnum Opus syndrome thing where they have to make the next big thing and almost all of their projects are treated as candidates for it. Turned the super shotgun into a quad shotgun complete with new firing sound and fixed muzzle flash animation (feel free to add new reload sounds later down the line.

All of the levels for Doom and Doom 2 were designed around pistol starting because it was carried over from Wolfenstein 3D (where you had lives), and also because it made things a million times faster and easier to make the levels if they were all balanced around it being possible to beat them from pistol start if necessary, even if it would be harder.
That also made the game easier overall, but that's kind of acceptable considering that the first game was very much a big time gateway drug for first person shooters, and this would be made up for by Thy Flesh Consumed and Plutonia.

Naturally, the game is also designed very deliberately around continuous play, otherwise you simply wouldn't get to carry shit over between levels, and they wouldn't sometimes give you stuff which is simply not very necessary for the level in question (like the secret rocket launcher in Entryway).

Finished strife. It was okay. More fun in the first half than the second. The level design started to get confusing and finding some of the npcs got annoying. Also fighting the bosses it seemed like after you beat them you could easily miss one of those sigil pieces if you didn't save before fighting one.


I also didn't find all the weapons besides one but it seemed like most of them were useless outside of the machine gun the rocket launcher and the sigil.


While it was a fun and creative use of the doom engine. Id probably never play it again. Towards the end i just wanted it to be over and almost didn't finish it

It's bad because it's all effectively just chatbots scraping google searches and often hallucinating answers. There's an Anon a few posts above yours that shows the ChatGPT'd code and it's kinda shit.
The real problem comes from the very real risk that people constantly use this shit for their project until everything is held together with this kludge.

The only AI code you can trust is one that's trained on your input and basically acts like an autocomplete, and even then it's a pretty big "IF," whereas if you're asking AI for new code wholesale, it's pretty often gonna be trash. Plus, it's not like you're gonna be able to fix the bugs if you don't know how it works, and AI quickly fucks up "its own code" within the second prompt, as it's not like it actually understands how it works either.

It's sometimes used by people who aren't programmers themselves, and don't catch when the AI for instance uses imaginary functions or libraries, which then don't work, or other kinds of errors.

I'm actually kind of baffled that Graf, who's an actual seasoned videogame programmer veteran with credits going back to the 90s (including old PC and PSX games), would use AI generated code in this exact manner.
Not because such a person wouldn't ever use it, there's plenty of veteran coders who, just like Graf says, sometimes uses AI to generate up an example for some minor or trivial thing, so they can spend more time thinking and working on more important parts.

Rather, it's that he didn't go through that code to verify that the AI didn't fuck it up, not to talk about running and testing it. It's such a weird negligence.
Lord knows he's not immune to negligence, but it's more that when using AI for this exact thing, that you wouldn't do your due dilligence on it.
