The GZDoom drama is equal parts hilarious and depressing. Above all, it reinforces my decision in never setting foot in ZDF's Discord because good God, it's wild just how awful some of these people carry themselves.

Anyway, bunker map is close to done. I have a few monsters left to code and two more areas to make. Pic rel is the air filtration area, I had no clue how to make something realistic so I settled for making big open spaces where supposedly there's enough space for air to flow through on its own. Actual engineers must be having a seizure.

Sadly, I won't have enough time to make the water purification plant and the sump room. I might go back to them in an update, which is fine - this is kinda rushed and I require Peanut's likeness to make it true to life. I also want to make a map for Sub Mortem but I'm not sure I can make it.

Build was available much earlier, and it was also less demanding on computers. Duke Nukem 3D came out just a bit before Quake, and it wasn't as technologically advanced, but it leveraged its simpler graphics to have much more detail and clutter to make a world which for the most part looks much more lived in, and you STILL didn't need as much hardware power as with Quake.

Quake's more advanced graphics leading to less room for that kind of detail and clutter ends up being to a sort of advantage though, as it works with the weird occult alien dimension themes. There's no human creature comforts on the wrong side of a slipgate, either there were some kind of peoples living there once but they were eradicated or left, or there simply never were, and these realms were always barren.

Seeing all this gzdoom drama, it makes me so glad that all of Quakes modern source port developers are awesome, chill dudes. Ericw, (Quakespasm) Spoike, (QSS and FTE) aguiRe, (Enhanced GLquake) Makro and Qmaster, (Ironwail) Novum, (vkquake) I've talked with all of them and they are always willing to help out with whatever, fixing bugs or adding features. Thanks for putting up with me all these years. You guys rock!

I do. That grasp comes from having a whole game's worth of examples that I can dissect and mess around with until I know what things do and how to use them.
When it comes to the new stuff in FTE, all you get are a bunch of function definitions with brief commented descriptions (if even). Doesn't help that half of those descriptions are out of date.

I made a fairly complex program using AI, just to see what was actually possible. As an experiment.
It ended up with a bunch of vestigial code in the end and it's not clean, but if I were an actual programmer and not some average joe, with a better idea of what it would entail from the beginning, I think it would be quite doable. Most of the issues were due to my own lack of understanding.
Sure I had to logic my way through some bug fixes and keep it on track, but it did make a functional program in the end, with a fair amount of features.
With a larger code base, like gzdoom has, it might be harder to keep in line, but it's probably starting from a cleaner position too. And I was using Grok 3 to start. When grok 4 came out it was like night and day, usability wise. With advancements coming down the pipe, like tiny recursive model, it's not going anywhere.

I don't have a dog in the fight but I think it's interesting. I really don't think AI is any more of a bubble than software development itself is.

There's a couple of others, one is a big empty DM arena with a Berserk Pack named "Mortal Kombat." UAC Labs was probably his best level, and frankly it's kind of ok for like 1995 standards, but if the author wasn't an infamous murderer it would have been forgotten to time because there's nothing else standout or interesting about it.
It also had some of the Doom gore crudely 'enhanced' with MS-Paint, like drawing more red blood to death animations, but I don't know if he did that himself or if it was something he just found.

The Slipseer group is a whole other bag, but the big thing that made me skeptical here was when Alkaline's key pickups were being complained about: How nearly all keys, no matter the map, would trigger some sort of fight or encounter. Tis the season for Quakestuff so I was feeling it anyways, but that helped to inspire a replay of both Alkaline and how AD compared.
Nearly halfway through with both and each mod has been strikingly similar about it: They'll both have key pickups triggering small fights, larger encounters, or doing fuckall, and in fact the first Alkaline map I played this month (alk_pillars) used the "fuckall" option. I'll start thinking AD has more keys that do nothing, and then I'll play alk_corrupt and alk_eclipse. A fun one was finding out alk_core and ad_swampy both have a keygrab where assholes swarm you after a nearby wall comes down.
I might come to a different conclusion when I finish the rest the rest of Alkaline's auxiliary maps and AD's second hub, but these have generally been neck-and-neck in nearly all regards, not just with keys: Encounter design and progression, level progression, aesthetic quality, overall map flow...I've seen claims about Alkaline being more "modern" but I'm not seeing much different with AD here besides the overall look, and even then I associate "tech" with Quake 1 as well so they're both equally Quake-y.

Remembering stuff like Ken's Labyrinth 2, that is absolutely the case from what I gather, but I wouldn't be sure that General Arcade or Gearbox had to contact Ken at all.
The reason why I question the re-release thing is because I suspect that Apogee could have the right to license it however they want, which is how we got an entire branch of specifically Duke3D derived games, like Redneck Rampage, Nam, Extreme Paintbrawl and Jesse Petrilla games. And I'm pretty sure that Duke Nukem Zero Hour got at least some Build code in it, which is notable due to the fact that Ken never listed it anywhere as far as I'm aware. And Kaiser saying that Slavedriver is similar to Build in some aspects makes Lobotomy games suspicious too.
I'd honestly love for someone more knowledgeable about all that to chim in.

I'm not opposed to the idea of using them in a level, but I would need to actually try to design a map around that, and I feel it would be difficult to do while making the map look decent.

I think that if the liteamps worked differently, like maybe it just boosted lighting by a percentage or so, mappers would be more inclined to use them.

Well, I don't want my map to not be visible either, so that's why I try to strike a balance. After all, if my map looks bad when it's fullbright, that's me being concerned with the aesthetic, but if what I've built is just too dark to see, that's easily an aesthetic problem.

Since having a lot of REALLY dark places can also be a big hindrance to gameplay, I use this kind of stuff sparingly. The staircase/tunnel I'm doing here is for an exit sequence where you go down this deeper and darker path, so in this instance the darkness itself IS the aesthetic, and there's no gameplay it's getting in the way of, but I want the 'start of darkness' to look cool too.

Wrong. The point of the visor is to make it easier for the player to see, and it does exactly that, which helps navigation and combat in dark places.

However, as it makes the entire map max brightness, that makes the designed environments look ugly, and therefore mappers don't want to use them. Even iD, Team TNT, and Midway, avoided the visors like the plague, they're probably the rarest item in these games, and remain the rarest used item by mappers today.

Sandy probably used them the most in the iwads, and E2M6 is like the best iwad example of a good use for them, they legit make the dark maze easier.
Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, but Sandy was not exactly the greatest at making his levels look good, so perhaps he wasn't as concerned with it (though he does avoid them in most of his maps).

The sets of maps where I've truly agreed about the "style over substance" remark as directed towards the Slipseer groups have been the mapjams. I've experienced a similar variety to the Q2 jams but with a bigger emphasis on trying out various and fun gameplay ideas. Feels like the Q2 remaster provided people a bigass toolbox to mess around with, even compared to a lot of Q1 mods.
Other major Slipseer projects - Dwell, Tomb of Thunder, Spiritworld - have been largely decent to occasionally great, and I'm not even sure how many of those few are from the "herd" besides the first.

I haven't heard or seen any hard confirmation for either.
With Zero Hour we know that the maps are actually in Build format and that the rom contains unused assets from DN64, which could imply that it was developed on top of its codebase, but that is just speculation. Since then we got a nearly full decompilation, but I haven't seen anyone knowledgable about Build commenting on it at that point.
With Saturn Powerslave, the only comment on recently released source code comparing it to Build was Kaiser's, but I wouldn't call him competent enough with Build to take his word as is, and he used the word "inspired" rather than "based on", which is an important distinction.

Good little level! I actually got mobbed a bit by the start, underestimating the Gremlins and Gargoyles. I had also forgotten that the Gremlins are actually a fun little enemy to fight.
Blasting the White Skellingtons with rockets is very satisfying, as well.

Music track is a very good choice, though the specific rendition is maybe a bit rough and grating on the ears.
The final surprise didn't really do much, I heard him spot me, backed away reflexively, and he's just stuck in there, quickly popping in a rocket and he was done.

Your choice if you want to tweak the second part or do any other changes, though I want to suggest another rendition of that music track.

Ok, that's a satisfying solution for this one thing, I just add a strip of sector in front of the gargoyle face and increase the lighting a bit, so it's more visible, then transfer the nearby darker lighting to the floor and ceiling there to hide it.
