Man, I remember like, a year ago, when they started work on a netcode update for GZDoom. How people actually had some hopes for it this time, and how it actually made progress. How it was enough that some mod developers were starting work on better multiplayer compatibility, for stuff like Reelism 2. How a couple months ago, everyone was talking it up; that 4.15 was gonna be THE multiplayer update

Now this happened. No update, no multiplayer, nothing. All you get instead is the thread starting to smell like /v/

I'd be happier with Zandronum if they were at least able to push up to the final version of ZDoom, as there is a decent number of maps that fit into that category of requiring the last round of features but didn't make the move to GZDoom and Zscript. As it stands, the only port that advertises client/server and is able to run them is K8V, and K8V has its own round of headaches to deal with.

The thing is, both of the modern multiplayer sourceports still trace back to csDoom. Odamex builds directly on it, and Zandronum has some csDoom code through Skulltag adopting pieces of it. csDoom also released only a couple years into ZDoom's lifetime, so the question is more why wasn't this effort integrated into the first place.

I'd be interested if anyone ever collected all the info on it. Like how much of it was community in-fighting, how much of it was needed developers going closed-source for a while, how much was it due to such ports needing to ditch features to keep multiplayer working, etc. etc.

Indeed. At the end of the day, it's at least enough that we've been able to have Quake co-op sessions here in the past, and it's my port of choice when playing with friends. I'll admit, part of it is just personal use case, as I play with people far enough away that they cross that they step over the 100ms threshold, and that's one of the situations where the limitations in the netcode start to show their teeth.

Otherwise, I'll admit it's actually pretty decent.

at the point that the game is more a graphical suite than game. theres a difference between looking and playing good (doomretro 5.x, crispy, choco)*, and focusing on looking like a game much newer, while doing nothing for the player without the addition of external files (gzdoom).
for all of its graphic options and neat tech wizardry, its just a community built graphics suite that does very little for the player besides looking new and shiny (literally, if you use texture filtering), as well as supporting other peoples hard work to turn doom into something else/more. its essentially a script extender with a bunch of bullshit tacted on.

dsda doesnt do much other than be easy to record afaik, as its meant to be as vanilla as possible.
chocolate (which doomretro is based heavily on), fixes the melee range and most of the blockmap (i say most, as sometimes its still present. DR fixes this.). i havent noticed any issues with the non-orthogonal walls with choco, either.

Whether of a megawad or an episode, this map was part of a bigger project.

You start inside an underground base, effectively overlooking a large canal, which you need to cross with platforming (1) or otherwise using a lift (2). Other side has square-looking decorations, either sticking out of the ceiling or the floor. Your first task here is to hit a switch on the other side, which starts a difficult ammo-deficient fight (by opening a closet with multiple barons and lowering the water level of the canal, which opens a sewer pathway with cacodemons emerging from). I remember that making these infight was crucial. There was also, supposedly, a closet with a group of pinkies, which in turn lead into a different area of unknown purpose. Question marks designate such areas of which I have no memories.

Know that any details may have inconsistencies and are in no way precise, up to me blending memories from different pwads.

It and Ground Zero are more of the same, for better and worse: More and more Q2 techbase. If you’re playing outside of the remaster, they’ll also be carried by gradual enemy improvements as you go into them from the vanilla campaign.

zscript's syntax is barely any more complicated than decorate, and for anything even slightly complex, it takes far less steps to do what you want than in decorate. Zscript is actually fucking great.

There are two problems that keep most people from using it:

1. For simple things that aren't doing anything outside of normal Doom behavior, you can just write it in decorate and save yourself bothering a bunch of a brackets of semicolons. The majority of everything most people want to make is going to fall into this category.

Perhaps it's not obvious to everyone, but you don't have to be a 1337 programmer to maintain or extend something like gzdoom, pretty much any competent programmer could pick it up.
It's successful because it had a primary maintainer that dedicated ~20 years to continued development where most people would lose interest or get distracted by life after a few years.
Even the idea of "bazaar" democratic open source development largely fails IME. Most successful open source projects are backed by corporate support (i.e. paid dev time and people with a professional rep to maintain), a cult-like leadership model, or they _usually_ fall apart to drama and in-fighting eventually.

Will these fork maintainers stick it out for the next 20 years? Lets see.

Last point, yes pushing code to master is retarded, but graf mentioned that was a mistake (should have been tested). Still it's a strange git workflow, not using feature branches...

Recently released (About a month ago) horror WAD in a similar vein as Unhinged or Happy Time Circus, in that you have vanilla weapons (Aside from newly added pipe bombs) and the maps consist almost entirely of new enemies. It's pretty difficult for a lot of reasons, primarily questionable map design, and for some reason I find it's brand of bullshit enjoyable.

The funny thing is that I remember this exact topic being an issue during the whole incident. I feel like Alkaline has had more challenging maps and fights than Arcane Dimensions so far. It came out way after so it makes sense. You just typically have less ammo, armor, less/worse weapons and the enemies are in positions more often to make you uncomfortable. There was some of that more on the smaller maps than the bigger ones in AD. You also are lacking some of the weapons of AD. And I do miss the Widowmaker even if it was very very OP. Also missing the Shadow Axe. I like gibbing corpses whilst I explore for secrets.

Another thing I just remembered - AD had doubled the shotgun ammo from 100 to 200. Combine it with the Widowmaker and even tho I had to frequently use nails or rocket ammo - a lot of the time I could get away with trying to do things more slowly using only shotgun rounds.

Saw Derelict Freighter and was like - oh that sounds like a Mass Effect side mission.

I'm reaching a similar conclusion as I'm nearing their end. For the most part they're fairly even in difficulty, but maps like Tellus Terminus and Pipework-Powered Pillars have had fights that tested me more than what AD's thrown at me. There are a few more edge cases like that tunnel in Dire Pipes.
The Realm of Enceladus had a real rude fight with those four golems, though.

Yeah I thought the Realm of Enceladus had a tough fight too. The smaller less pretty maps (although some had some great visuals like Dancing in the Golden Sun) tend to have tougher fights both in this and AD. Short but challenging. I do prefer the bigger maps though in both mods.
