>>12108516
>>12108540Freedoom legit has a lot of VERY good textures and sprites in it, if you've never paged through them you'd be surprised at some of them, but Freedoom also has this problem of being a really drawn out and unfocused patchwork which goes in a lot of needless circles.LibreQuake has been around for a far shorter time, and it seems like it's just a much more focused project.
>>12108550
>>12108554>Freedoom also has this problem of being a really drawn out and unfocused patchwork which goes in a lot of needless circles. It's definitely got that free software project issue of somebody in a position of power decides they want to keep in assets that are bad.

Playing mc_retrojam4 and the start map has me annoyed. Are the climbable brushes a troll, and why this dead space? Also, there is already a set of older retro-jam projects for quake, i wish they had come up with another name than "mc retro jam".
Retro Jam 4 is pretty good so far. I've just cleared the first floor of the hub and so far the maps have been challenging or at least interesting enough for the most part.
>>12108447Map looks cool, but it's clearly above my pay grade.
I'm confused why we get a rune right at the start of the new retro jam.
>>12108626I saw people complaining about that in testing but I guess the guy just didn't feel like fixing it before release.>>12108632It forces you to spawn at a different spot when you return to the hub. Quake's start map works the same way after you beat an episode and come back.
>>12108447>>12108630Yeah, this is simply beyond me. I had a second go, and I did a LOT better, but there's not enough ammo for me to work with, with the big hurtfloor area and limited cover I'm not skilled enough with infighting to ride out a hectic siege like that.I got them all down to the last two Mancubodes and one Arachno, but then I was completely out of quarters, and then I'm fucked. If there had been just one more box of shells, I could maybe have pulled it off.Attempt 1: https://litter.catbox.moe/1nk5mrdisay3evtz.lmpAttempt 2: https://litter.catbox.moe/hv4inrxy9lfn5rpl.lmpVery cool setup though, I like the music and aesthetic. >Orange Is True Love>Green soulsphere>A green soulsphere that replaces the invulnerability sphere, but otherwise functions exactly like the standard variant. Huh.>Since vanilla Doom defines item behavior based on the sprite name and not the thing number, this is achieved by switching the sprite number of the invulnerability sphere's states to those of the soulsphere instead, specifically the added green soulsphere animation frames. Huh. I never knew this.>The regular soulsphere is also used in the WAD but because of the changes to the color palette will appear orange instead of blue.I see.

Ever grind out a map, get stuck on a fight, become convinced its RNG bullshit. And then, take a break, do something a little different. Then immediately ace it?Is there a point where I'll ever learn to just take a break?
Completely unrelated to anything actually Doom (though Hovertank 3D and Catacombs 3D is in here), but I found this big collage once of VGA titlescreens/artwork.I was annoyed at it being a huge ass .JPG or .PNG, then as I was panning through it one day, I realized that it's because it had some stuff which wasn't VGA but another graphics standard with more colors, and also a crusty as fuck and artifacted .JPG for one of them. Removing those, along with some duplicates, and I could massively shrink down the filesize by making it a .PNG with indexed colors.I finally found some screens to replace the gaps left from that so that it's complete. Or, at least close to complete, I suspect that there's some sort of subtle color differences with VGA depending on setup (maybe emulation), hence why some seemingly identical colors aren't 100% the same in some of these. Not sure what to make with that, but it's at least all VGA now, and it's a nicely color indexed collage in a compact filesize.
>>12109035Those are EGA graphics, anon. VGA was the later standard with 256 colors used in Wolf3D, Doom, and later games.

>>12109230This is a really good fucking level and I like it a lot. Rockets only is a gimmick, but it works well here, and it made me almost shit my pants when the Rockets With Legs came around the corner. The player is strongly limited yet also very powerful, they've gotta mind their splash damage.Level layout is very simplistic, basically a long winding corridor, but that's not a bad thing for a short 2048 romp, it works as a gauntlet. It's also a pretty good looking level, a simple but enjoyable aesthetic (almost makes me think of Rondo/Dracula X), good use of light and shadow, as well as colors. Perfect music choice, also. While I certainly would look forward to yet one more submission from you, we still have 12 days left, so I don't personally think it's necessary to approach it like sheer speedmapping, it's fine to take more time.I'm not gonna demand it, because these are good anyway, but I wouldn't mind if you gave these levels (the two you submitted + the third you're considering), just a bit of visual pass at some point, things like texture alignment, some additional detailing in general.Regardless of your future approach, this level is a greatly appreciated submission.

What's with the weird illumination line at the bottom of the right pic? Taken from DSDA. Can't say where left one is from, probably DOS.You could also clearly see that the gun sprite is different, rendering seems to be imperfect.

Also some special night events and stuff like that.>>12109697Many 3d assets are from free sources still (for example, you can get basic props and weapon models easily anywhere on the web as free license), but I'm planning to replace a lot of them as I learn more blender. I have already created animations for the shotgun and some melee weapons, plus other misc. things.AI is fine for certain things, for example, you could take pictures of walls or ground and then use AI to tile them properly for texture usage (quality depends on the model though).Just using AI often gives "AI-like" results which look bad, so it's better to use a real base. There's also tons of free textures online anyway. Just depends what works for you.
>>12109697There's a lot of texture resources put together specifically for Doom, so there's no need to even worry about AI. A lot of good mapsets are using tweaked resource packs

You shouldn't sell people on the bullshit of just giving up and immediately turning to generational AI trash.Setting aside the shittiness, there's not a chance in hell that stuff is going to stay free as time moves forward. One should not rely on tools that can be snatched away so easily.
>>12110364Honestly I fail to see the appeal of anything containing AI shit. Just tells me you want zero personality in your work, so why would I bother checking it out? I like to play Doom because every map is a display of mapper's taste for aesthetics, gameplay and what the like in doom in general. Even the shittiest custom drawn texture will tell me more about you than whatever slop the AI would spew out.

>>12110356>Even poor art made with heart is infinitely more valuable than AI scraped generated nonsense. No it isn't. If I want a picture for a purpose, I don't give a shit about whether it contains the depths of the artist's tortured soul. I care about whether or not it looks good. I will take AI art that somebody's put the time into retrying until it looks right over a low-quality drawing no matter how many hours you sank into said drawing. Now if you're going to generate the whole thing bottom to top, then it's probably going to be shit, but if you're using it to cover a couple parts of the process you suck at then it's fine.

I feel Quake would benefit heavily from some sort of sniper rifle - something with range that isn't the rocket or nailguns to make dealing with enemies above you faster popping in and out of view faster.
>>12110484That's pretty neat. Thanks for mentioning it.
>>12110795I originally had a switch in the dining room, but it felt arbitrary so I for the walk-over trigger by the Berserk. Were the encounters and resources at a good spot? I didn't want to shower the player with too much, nor did I want the player to have to punch out or pistol hordes. How about the final area? I feel like another medium enemy or a few smaller ones could help stall out the timed door a bit. So you're not sitting there doing nothing for 15 seconds.
>>12110802Dwell has a fantasy railgun that shares cells with the thunderbolt, it helps to fill out the roster quite well honestly. I wonder how hard it'd be to make a weapon mod with that.

>>12110816I like mods that replace the thunderbolt with a railgun, especially considering how devastating the super NG already is.

Overengineering Mania > Early Bird Catches the 17 inch Fromitz Board because OM didn't open a monster closet every time I found a Fromitz Board. It instead restocked the level with enemies when you got the next major unlock - which this map does too but I just am getting sick of it's gimmick and I am nearly halfway through it. I have a ledge that had 3 different ogre closets spawn on it. And multiple with two. And it's almost the same monster closet minus a few changes if I grab a Fromitz board from the same room.
>>12110816>yeah they do but I think another ranged option would be better than slowly plinking away at the 20th ogre closet with only a shotgun that spawned above you in a single mapI don't actually think you like Quake, or at the very least, you aren't playing any good maps whatsoever.

>>12110840I think the Ogre closet above you gimmick with a shotgun only gets a bit old fast and the mapper should just give me more rockets/nailgun ammo at the very least to deal with it quickly.

>>12110810I think the map had the right amount of monsters. It wasn't so many that it felt like a chore to play punch out with them, but also enough to make you use your pistol. I don't think most people are going to take much less than 30 seconds to kill a king boner with a shotgun, but I'm not a doom pro myself, so all I can say is that both times I played the map the door opened by the time I killed him.
>>12110841Run like a bitch until you find a very, very abrupt corner and hide behind it. The vore projectiles can navigate around those soft corners quite easily.

>>12110892 It felt like he went down a little quick, which is why I downgraded the SSG to a regular shotgun. He's not that bad when you just hug the trees, but I trust your judgement.
>>12110925I think you still can in config
>>12110929Years of people over-emphasizing how 'Lovecraftian' and deep and mysterious Quake 1 is for reddit points while boiling Quake 2 down to just DOOD TECHBASE will do that. Also doesn't help that Quake 2 doesn't really have an equivalent to Arcane Dimensions yet.I still prefer Quake 1, but the gulf between them isn't that wide.
>>12110929The balancing in both games is pretty different. Q1 is much more limited in what you can do, because the shotgun/double shotgun is the weakest weapon in the game, and most enemies have more than one attack, one of which will obliterate you if you're caught unaware. It has way less enemies, so every enemy encounter feels different.Q2 changed the balancing so now you can run and gun around most encounters, and most weapons are useful against any enemy.I don't really care about lovecraftian/demonic theme of Q1 instead of sci-fi/militaristic of Q2. That's just preference.
>>12110929I like them about equallly but I think first Quake had way better expansions, Ground Zero is the least fun I had in a Quake game
>>12109190I made a couple of maps recently I was really pleased with, then sort of ran out of steam and stopped giving a shit. I'm waiting for the inspiration to come back. I hate forcing myself to try and map though sometimes its the best way for me.
Early Bird got better later on once I got the 2nd pair of jump boots. Feels like they padded out the first 2/3rds of it by repeating fights. And I am done with Alkaline along with my massive backlog of notable mods and mapsets of various boomer shooters that I established years ago and kept expanding year after year. Still got some lesser known stuff from various mappers I liked along the way but I've played practically every major thing that has been mass recommended in these threads to completion.
>>12110929I suspect the retro shooter boom starting around 2018-19 skewed things in its favor for awhile. I otherwise regard it an improvement in singleplayer/PvE due to its more varied and interesting enemy roster.
>>12109998Nobody?
>>12110670I don't usually post about it anywhere since I prefer to work in solitude and I'm too old for social media stuff. But I might post some updates in these doom general threads. When I get the demo up there'll be more public information out about this. Thanks for the interest though.
Is Scumhead's stuff actually worth playing or do people only talk about them because they show boobs?
>>12110931Hmm, I admit I didn't try and fight him inside the final area, and instead whittled down his health while peeking from the hallway outside. I tried it now while hiding behind the trees and it is faster, but not by much. I really don't think it's a big deal unless someone tries to kill him as fast as possible, but if you really feel there should be more enemies there I don't think it'd hurt the map neither.
>>12110987I'll play around with it.
>The final fight of Pipework Powered PillarsWas this even playtested? There's a difference between challenging and this utter bullshit. Shit map.
>>12111014>shitseer mappers>playtesting Literally no.
>>12110929I dunno, maybe I should give Q2 a replay because I just don't see what people like so much about it. The guns felt slower, the enemies weren't very threatening, and the maps didn't look all that visually interesting. It's an alright game but I'm not too crazy about it. I think the game hits its stride when you enter the final fortress with all your guns, the level design was on point there.
>>12111014Yeah, that mapper is exhibit A along with Mazu for the mapper equivalent of a drunk guy ordering the spiciest curry he can to look tough in front of his friends. The rest of Alkaline is really good, but that map can go fuck itself on higher difficulty levels.
>>12111014I just cheated that part, personally. The mapper clearly gave no fucks, why should I?
>>12111014Not impossible, enjoyed myself, but it is the hardest part of the mod.
>>12111014It would honestly have still been tough and less bullshit if there was one or two less waves and/or ammo on each platform. Having knights, ogres, and scrags shooting at you at the end while you're ammo starved because you have to wait for the platforms with the pickups to come up WHILE dodging all of the enemy attacks with zero space just felt dumb. I just decided to savescum between each wave and called the map there.
>>12111016I do get the feeling they care more about aesthetics/being talked about more than making a good level sometimes. Occasionally it works, but most of the time it doesn't. I'm genuinely baffled why people keep putting Alkaline up there with Arcane Dimensions when the gap in quality between them is so vast. AD was made by seasoned vets for the most part, while Alkaline was slapped together by the usual suspects from Slipseer.
>>12111030Fuck it, I just godmoded it.Don't get me wrong, the concept is sound, but it desperately needs more suppliers and less waves. I think with some polishing up the level could end on a good note rather than a sour one. Too bad such advice is seen as "toxic" by those guys, so the maps will never improve.
>>12110982Most of Scumhead's games can be completed in less than an hour. I know the Lycanthorne games can be completed in like 30 mins each. They don't really overstay the welcome so you will have some degree of fun but I do think the level and fight design is really basic in a couple of the games I played. I know Scythe 2 is supposed to have much better map/fight design and is much longer. Vomitoreum and Mohrta I have yet to play.
>>12111014I actually enjoyed that level and the final fight to an extent but I'm pretty good at platforming in FPS games. The one segment of platforming I didn't like was in Logistics of Chaos - the ladders on the descending pillars made that segment annoying enough that I no-clipped past the second section.

I'm still of the mind that Alkaline can be more difficult but not "worse" with its gameplay. There was some hyperbolic grumbling about Alkaline key pickups "always" triggering fights when ironically I feel AD could use more of it on occasion (it also was not true). Having the fights in this room trigger on the gold key grab would be slightly more predictable, but as is its much easier to pull the dreaded "doorway funnel" maneuver and minimize the encounter almost entirely.

I get that facilitating development is the core purpose of GitHub above all else, but these days a lot of devs operate under the notion of "We don't need ModDB or another hosting site, it's just on GitHub lol" which makes distribution pointlessly obtuse. It's not even a huge obstacle either, I can do it and I'm not a programmer, but tucking away the compiled release along the side of all the development stuff is just making it like at a glance that it just isn't being provided at all. To people who don't program (including millions who have been on the web for 30 years), the common impulse is to scan the top tabs and not see anything that mentions downloads or builds. If you ACTUALLY wanted to keep out computer illiterates, you wouldn't provide compiled builds AT ALL, and you know that.>>12111280Bitch, that ship sailed before you were even born, the internet had already stopped being a programmer exclusive space entirely by the 1980s.

>>12112090These days no, costs peanuts to have a TB or so of bandwidth when it's probably like 30 or so people getting mods off it, odds are it's on the corner of somebody's proper stuff too so not like it's an extra expense.

>>12112112Man, it has Ad Mortem in there and all.
>>12112110>Wow, the new version of MUGEN is kind of weird.
>>12112112That's TSPG and it's Euro equivalent, it's mostly what people use for uploading Zandronum mods to host servers with without actually running dedicated servers themselves. There was an Australian one too but I think that went down recently.

Damn that was scary!
>>12112145More like another option, it's been around since fucking forever.
>>12112112I'm mystified about this one. What's inverted about it? It doesn't look mirrored or flipped turned upside down, and the filesize is identical.

>>12112194Yeah, the view up there is weird. I almost want there to be more of a plot because the ruins/giant skeletons out there make me wonder where the fuck we actually are.
>>12112157Did you run them together?
>>12112157>>12112162All levels are flipped
>>12112223No, why would that do anything? Best I can tell it's a copy of AV.wad which is renamed, the bytes are exactly the same.
>>12112212That’d ruin the mystery. I also swore I saw the skybox in use somewhere else.
>>12112230They're not the same, I just told you levels are flipped. Same size does not mean same content
>>12112238NTA That’s actually pretty crazy. Thanks I’ll have to play this, it’s like sonic origins where it inverts the levels

Oh hey, that creepypasta or whatever that was going around last year. I actually could not find this .wad anywhere else at all, so this either fell of the web quickly or has not been published anywhere but this repository.Nothing very novel as a story, but at least the design of the monster was interesting and spooky.
>>12112315>so this either fell of the web quickly or has not been published anywhere but this repository. It's the archive of everything somebody's ran a server with through sentinel's playground, which was going to be purged a year or so ago but they got so shat on they changed their minds. There's even back versions of vrskins on there.

What was this one skulltag wad that was popular back in the day along with ghouls vs humans where you pick certain classes and one of them harvests crystals and you had do other stuff it’s been a long time but I vividly remember it I think there were different classes you could pick such as the aforementioned one with the crystals
Is there a way to show level stats in Nugget? Like on the automap?
>>12112583Options > Status Bar/HUD > Widgets > Show Level Stats
>>12112614I swear to god it wasn't there when I last looked, I'm NOT retarded
>>12112637It happens, man lmao. I spent like an hour trying to configure Zandronum earlier so I know how it feels.
>>12112645>I spent like an hour trying to configure Zandronum earlierI find it easier to just edit the .ini with the ZDoom-based stuff, there's a lot of shit that's not in the settings menu that's useful like screenshot_dir for having all of the ports use one fucking screenshot folder.

>>12110743if you want to be pedantic, only dimension of the machine was. dimensions of the past was developed solely by J.F. Gustafsson, an employee at machine games. he didnt even do it for machine games, he just wanted to make more maps for quakes anniversary as he was very involved in the map scene in the mid 90s. machine games just published it in collaboration with nightdive. so you are both WRONG.
>>12111795Discord and these other locked-down proprietary comms/distribution platforms a damaging shitholes, but modders who choose to (exclusively) use them deserve to have their stuff lost to time, like natural selection.Too much to ask that most people learn from history.
>>12111975I have no love for nightdive, but quakeulf and gooberman are the only 2 sperging out, and gooberman evidently understands the topic better than quakeulf. Edward doesn't sound unprofessional, in fact it looks to me like he was genuinely trying to help quakeulf understand he needs to look at the source. If you're a dev it's pretty common for other people (devs or not) to trivialize a complex problem because they don't have the context/constraints.
