I always wanted to remake habitat to something that looks like it might be the intention behind it, but I never really managed.
>Marathon>concept art shows a lot of extremely moody artwork>there's a very foreboding tone before you even get to the main menu>first mission's song is incredibly atmospheric>the actual in-game artwork are some goofy looking drawings
Lemme tell yall somethin you city-slicker joystick cowpokes: all this fancy-pants, slow-as-molasses nonsense like Deus Ex, Thief, and SS2? That aint gamin, that's sittin in a library wearin a cowboy hat for cosplay points. I don't need a tutorial voice readin me a bedtime story while a skeleton in a top hat tells me how to open a door. That's bureaucracy masqueradin as art, and I aint buyin it, not with my boots still caked in Quake dust. Now, Doom, Quake, Half-Life hell yeah, thats the wild frontier. Every jump, every rocket, every monster you blast into kingdom come? That's honesty, grit, and the smell of gunpowder in the mornin. That's gamin with spine, guts, and whiskey in your veins. You feel the map beneath your boots, the bullets in your teeth, the adrenaline in your brain. That's real cowpoke respect.Slow games? They spoon-feed ya plot like a wet nurse on a lazy Sunday. Real cowboys? We tear through levels like stampedin bulls, one-shotting whatever dares cross our path, spit in the wind, hat shadowin our eyes, gun smokin. You measure skill in frags and lightning reflexes, not how long you can read dialogue boxes. So saddle up, drop the lecture, and grab yer shotguns, boys. The prairie don't wait for your pacing or your storyboards. Action-packed masterpieces don't care if you cry about narrative. They care if you survive the chaos with teeth in your jaw and dust in your boots.

I think I've got a handle on Kustam now. Mostly.>Terraligma musicNice. Also there's this weird bug where the music gets quieter when the song loops and I'm pretty sure it's the musicvolume stuff in sndinfo because it doesn't happen when I comment all of them out. That's with the custom music off(maybe also playing Doomslayer when it's on). There might be something with the monster count, too, because I was missing a monster on the last level despite everything being dead.
>>12211525Oh no
>>12211585Man I wish I could do something about the music volume stuff. But I don't have the tools or knowledge to directly modify the volume levels of SPCs/NSFs, I'm actually not even sure if that's possible.Did you mean to type "Terraligma"?
>>12211589I did, yes.
Oh, so that's what happens when you throw a golden barrel into a golden barrel.
>>12211525
>>12211685Yeah there's also some bug with one of the corruption cards (I think the random drop egg) that can spawn a bunch of golden barrels and if you set one off the chain of explosions fucking melt your GPU

>>12211739Lol primary. They really have straight-up robbed count chicken's project off of him, haven't they.
>>12211739Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't just go with a rainbow for the color instead of the teal(?) they went with.
>>12211738That's... concerning. I wonder if there's a way to make the barrels exempt from the drop eggs?

>>12211791Their arrogance and contempt humour me greatly, how dare they poison us with envy by forking out an opensource project that was already built of someone else’s project? Truly a smite of disrespect from their side that deserves a flood of accusations Honestly though even with improvements like vaseline filter being off by default I don’t believe it will keep being primary that long if most people will continue to use GZ anyways, especially if main changes from GZ will be useless troon barking like changing default pronouns in player options - El Pollero will probably return to be the main dev anyway and they will merge - though it will be a sour spectacle because he won’t forget how rachel threw him under the bus

>>12211767As a form of protest I used ResourceHacker to change executable's icon to GZDoom's, and replaced bootlogo.png inside uzdoom.pk3/graphics with a blue circle with chicken man's profile picture. And I do it every single update. That new logo is ugly as fuck. It assaulted my eyesight every time I booted up the game.

>>12212003Trust me, I'm not a caco. I couldn't possibly be one since I need arms to type this. That picture of yours was drawn by a pain elemental. In reality everyone loves caco and hates elementals.
>>12211825Rachel throws people under the bus like it's a verbal tic, Graf MUST have seen it coming, sooner or later. If it all DOES fold back into GzDoom again later, that would be so fucking funny and stupid that I would almost be fine with the blur filter default. Almost.
>>12211850True, but 4.14.3 fixes an annoying automap bug from 4.14.2. That's as far as I'm willing to go, though. Won't be making the switch to 5.0, regardless of the shiny new toys it brings. If GZDoom ever comes back, I'd likely go back to that, both for playing and mod development. It's chicken man or bust. For the time being I can safely target 4.14.x to satisfy both camps.
>>12212023You're not fooling anyone, mister. Hisster, even.
>>12212031>If it all DOES fold back into GzDoom again laterWhich it won't cause there's no need to, it's just the fantasy for weird people who have decided they prefer Graf in some dumb sourceport culture war shit.

the issue with hellrider vengeful crashing on the mall massacre battle in dbp77 map08 with project malice enemies turned out to not be the fault of hellrider vengeful, but nashgore nextguess it just got to be too muchafter finishing the wad i have to say i didn't really miss out on muchmap09, the eponymous Economy of the Dead, is just kind of an uninspired slaughter arena that shits out a couple waves at you, kind of a disappointing end to the wad compared to Grief Arbiternow i must consider what to play nextalso further bitchingNaku Naru 2>Another fucking SPAS-12 and Double Barrel combo. I'm way past "getting bored" of these in mods. At least it looks like it's drawn and not just a cronched 3d model>Another generic assault rifle machine gun, what's the point?>everything past Slot 4 is cool>4-barrel rocket launcher is cool but also way too easy to kill myself with, not sure why>magic naginata is cool>so on and so forthRaging Bull>SPAS 12 AND DOUBLE BARREL BABY KILLING MYSELF>the second most generic machine gun shoe-in, the twin uzis>grenade launcher on 5, at least it's a china lake and not an m79Atomrain Stormtrigger>mostly just random real gun 3d models crunched down, honestly i didn't play even a full map with thisInferno Suture>cool weapons all around but i don't give a shit about mbf21-style mods, sorry not sorrySiren>genuinely upset I can't play this with Project Malice, every single of the guns is interesting, even the classic green mod pistol has its own neat spin on it with a different internal boltVolatile Material>"all ammo replaced by various guns, no reloading, toss your old gun away and pick up a new one" is an interesting gameplay gimmick>the guns are whatever>cool menu>why does Mace LFW keep making mods with cool ideas, very cool menus, and thoroughly uninteresting guns?False Angel>honestly interesting and I was onboard until I noticed that every gun past slot 4 is an aggressively generic scifi rifle model
>>12212327regarding dbp77 i meant that i didn't miss out on much due to the crash, as in its weakest parts are that mall fight and then map09 as a wholealso if you've played a bunch of the dbps tell me which you think are the most like Grief Arbiter, i want that kind of aesthetic more

>>12211459Would like to see this chart updated with Doom 64 and Freedoom.
>>12212327I think you're better off making your own mod at this point.
>>12212372I like many mods with few if any notes, but those mods have their own enemy rosters and often won't work properly with another monster packI really, really like Insanity's Requiem. It just has the small issue that I get fucking blinded by the shotgun incendiary effects.
>>12212391I do agree with that Anon, you could always just start by grabbing specific weapons from these mods you like, see how that feels and go from there.Because having the desire to see cool shit can be a powerful driving force. Works for me.
>>12212391Just cut them off. If some Germanic asswipe stuck in 2007 managed to make a weapons and suit only version of Project MSX, so can you. Also what >>12212397 said. Make your autismus maximus energy work for you, rather than against you.
>>12212403>managed to make a weapons and suit only version of Project MSXFive seconds commenting include lines out.
>>12212169Right that's why I don't get why people are getting upset over Graf being ousted when he really hasn't done a whole lot for a long time. What's the last time he's done something truly impressive? I mean yeah he made GZDoom but he's also an insufferable sperg with the fucked up German autism that makes it impossible to work with him and he throws a fit whenever he gets even slightly questioned.
>>12211524Is this the Siren you're using? https://www.moddb.com/mods/siren-doom-tc/news/major-campaign-update
>>12211589It's not possible to directly modify volume levels of SPCs / NSFs, you'd have to convert them to something like wav, adjust volume, and convert back. You're smart so I'm sure you know that Kegan, but I bring this up mostly because doesn't his report make it sound like a bug you could deal with in the code, rather than necessitating modifying the audio files at all?

>>12211487There are bright color highlights but it's more for visibility, both the world textures and the core colors of most enemies are very earthy and drab.
>>12212453Well, I brought up that question initially because I don't think there's anything I can do about it via code on my end that's still zandronum compatible.
>>12212468Oh.
>>12211487also if you're referring to pic rel, it came after M1.
>>12212472Yeah. Because I'm sure there's some fancy Zscript wizardry or some other new bullshit that GZDoom has had for awhile that could be the answer to my problem. But keeping myself locked with Zandronum compatibility really takes a coffee table to my shins. So ultimately the music volume thing is a problem that I don't think I can fix, which kinda pisses me off.

>>12212852>>12212868>>12212878You people are ignoring the part where Graf has been right about a number of things, and also doing a bulk of the work on developing GzDoom, while the new crew of UzDoom just HAD to drag Rachael along, someone who NOBODY in the overall community actually likes or trusts as a person, because they're an infamously toxic and narcissistic manipulator.I'll remind you that Rachael was the exact same person who hijacked Skulltag from Brad Carney, and that they're permabanned from DoomWorld for various reasons, and that's before we get into later skullduggery which has already been discussed to death.Yeah, Graf has a LOT of flaws and makes some bad decisions, a lot of the other contributors (many who left for UzDoom) have actually made good additions too, and maybe UzDoom really will work out and successfully replace GzDoom for good. But can you HONESTLY fucking blame people for NOT immediately getting on their knees to throat UzDoom without question? Can you NOT see various non-political reservations which someone might have? You could look at it through that angle, but you can't ignore that various lefty trans people in the general GzDoom community exhibit an open disgust towards Rachael as a person (and for very good reasons), and some would point out where the perspective from UzDoom's devs isn't 100% honest or truthful, and that they're giving Graf less credit than he's still owed for the final blowup causing the split.
>>12212902Does Captain Wayne count? It's pretty funny at times, and I enjoy the combat, even if ammo and health supplies are on the overabundant side. Fuck the Smashers though, they're a menace when there's two of them. This got me pretty good, Wayne's a freak of nature.
>>12212908Graf's an idiot, Rachael should have been given the boot many many years ago, the UZDoom team are fools for keeping her around.
>>12212910>Does Captain Wayne count? It does, commercial GZ/UZDoom releases still count as retro.
>>12212908Isn't Rachael the same one who chased out Impie for wrongthink?

>>12212926Some shit in one of his mods that he's long since purged of his own accord because he felt like it was damaging his hopes of having a writing career.
>>12212916I really like the arsenal. Making your shotgun a starting weapon that's a solid workhorse but still keeping it in check with a two shot -> reload system means you're going to want other weapons still, you can get a lot done with the shotgun alone though, you just have to respect the reload or you get fucked.Fists are pretty good, the knuckle crack radial stun move is powerful as hell and the charged lightning punch is satisfying. Chaingun's good, boom brew is VERY fun to use.I don't make enough use of the cannon and shock weapon though, primarily because I can unleash so much carnage with just the shotgun, chaingun, and bottles.Enemy roster is pretty varied and the basic gun toting goons are very aggressive, it's actually cool how the shotgunners rush you to get in close to land a meatshot, I've never really seen that done before, boxing dudes are fun to fight as they block and have big damage resistance unless you run in and kick their asses over. Bottle carrying seagulls are complete bastards but they always make their presence known, and I appreciate that a lot. The grenadier goons are also menaces and I always hit them with a bottle. The construction worker dudes are kinda weird though, I've never found them too much of a threat but they take a shitload of punishment from most weapons, but a single bottle kills them. Later on in the game there's a high tier fish monster that's a cross between Quake's Fiend and an Archvile, they'll fuck you up real bad.Wayne's a really fun protagonist, love his antics during the cutscenes and some of the shit he says during gameplay is funny. I want this game to succeed. You boys should go play it.
>>12212942>I want this game to succeed. You boys should go play it.I played the shit out of the demo, just don't have time to throw at the full thing right now, sounds like it's doing well though, which is good.
Oh I also forgot to mention I think it's really interesting how all healing/armor items grant overheal/armor. With both decaying back to 100 if you're above it. The game feels like it really wants you to keep moving forward and kicking ass, good shit.
>>12212942>Making your shotgun a starting weapon that's a solid workhorse but still keeping it in check with a two shot -> reload system means you're going to want other weapons still, you can get a lot done with the shotgun alone though, you just have to respect the reload or you get fucked. It's something I'd thought about a fair bit, having a good melee option and a mini shotgun for the pistol replacement so you're going between the two while getting stuff with more range / firerate to fill out the gaps, possibly with dispersion pistol-like upgrades for said mini shotgun to keep it from falling into irrelevancy.

tfw Community Chest 1 was intended to only use vanilla doom's mapping config while taking advantage of removed static limits, but is technically not a pure "limit removing" wad by modern definitions, because playtesting was done in boom, and thus requires using a boom complevel due to certain boom bugfixes and changes to certain behaviors being relied on in a few instances.

Not to needlessly dogpile, but this is the retro fps thread.I dropped the original Marathon after 2 maps. In 2 maps, I just was not impressed with any of it. The odd, comic book style enemies against the primitive FPS colony ship Marathon corridors, the fact that the corridors didn't look like a colony ship at all, and the guns that felt worse than Doom in every way. Couldn't stand it. I know its primary legacy is its writing, but the game just isn't enough for me to find out how good it is. The most positive thing I can say about it, is in Reelism 2.1, it's always fun to get that slot where everyone turns into the Marathon protagonist.
>>12214216>I know its primary legacy is its writing,I didn't like Durandal as a character most of the time
>>12214216I'm into Marathon about as much as I am into say Half-Life, and Marathon 1 just isn't that fun as a game.2 and Infinity on the other hand easily surpass it. The art's better, the sounds are better, the gunplay is significantly improved thanks to the shotgun(s) and the gameplay itself is better.Infinity's level design is actually pretty damn insane in a good way, even if the only actual new content boils down to one new weapon that shines underwater (even though there's much less water in the game), one new NPC in the vacbob and some recolors. There have been some attempts to revisit Marathon 1 with the style of its sequels, but that mostly comes from stuff like Marathon Eternal and thus are confined to a story arc or two. I'd kill for a proper remake.
Ok so far TNT2 has been a banger, enemy count is a bit skitz but otherwise it's really fun, well balanced and feels well designed. I'm too dumb for most secrets but it's built well enough you never feel lost or directionless.
>>12214201Nice, I've never even attempted that one desu
>>12214226I actually prefer M1 to the sequels for pure combat. The AI spends a lot less time waiting/between actions in the original and more time just pursuing you, which combined with usually narrower quarters makes things more intense. Enforcers having hitscan (or hitscan-like; not sure which) attacks is also a lot more menacing than the arachnotron-like attacks they have in M2/MInf. Hulks, while obviously HP sinks and not too hard to avoid if you know the layout of the map, introduce living obstacles that M2/Minf have no parallel to, more like super-Pinkies. The enemy security bots in M1, while only featured in one level iirc, are maybe my single favorite enemies in any FPS, in how they strafe you and basically take cover by patrolling hallways perpendicular to your location, and in how aggressive they are with the machine gun/grenade combo. I also love how if you shoot them with a non-fatal grenade/rocket, the physical force causes them to dip in the same direction until they recalibrate their correct altitude.Maybe a hot take but I think M1 had a better balanced arsenal too. The dual shotties in M2/MInf are legendary, but too sparse on ammo to make regular use of, it's almost more of a temp/super-weapon. The flamethrower in the original is almost like an ammo-consuming chainsaw, cuts through everything and effectively has permanent hit-stun, extremely powerful, whereas the sequels make half of the enemies resistant to it and there's almost no reason to even use it in M2.

>play Insanity's Requiem, having fun>it just randomly breaks the keys on maps by mixing up yellow skullkeys with yellow cards>has a baked in texture pack for liquids which also makes many maps look like shit due to incongruent liquidsjesus christ man
>>12214280I agree that M1 has more interesting monsters that 2 and Infinite cut from their rosters, but a few (like the ticks that blow up) were reasonable enough. Ultimately, I dislike M1 more for the level design and for how experimental (as in they probably weren't too familiar with their own tools), it still makes the Marathon more like a man-made anthill. I suppose it makes sense in context, but the game never quite won me over.I still would kill for a remake with the best of 1 and Durandal, either way. 1 had some genuinely scary moments and in general was fun, 2 had better-feeling guns and a more cohesive artstyle.
>>12214286Yeah original TNT to me was always a case of neat concepts and ideas, but the execution is unfortunately still very 1995. Good for its time, but hard to go back to outside of a few maps, IMO. The sequels however feel like TNT's ideas in a modern lens, which makes them more enjoyable for me.And I've always kinda leaned towards Plutonia Revisited, too. While Gusta did produce some high quality maps for Plutonia 2, PL2 unfortunately kinda forgot that one of Plutonia's strengths was its small-medium sized levels, and theres just too many that are overly long.
>>12214162Fair enough, you're probably right. I said 2 because I saw slopes. I associate the sequel with ridiculous detailing & making slopes out of thousands of 1px wide sectors. People used to laugh at King Reol doing that shit 20+ years ago, now you get sucked off for it.

>>12214861Just simply do not get hit.
>>12214845I mean this with no exaggeration or conspiratorial tone, but most of the people who would've developed cool worked-out gameplay mods say 10 years ago, now think of themselves, "why don't I take this and make a full proper game and make the big bux like Hedon or Selaco or etc"And then they never finish or release anything because huge TCs almost never get completed compared to just a gameplay (Weapons+character) mod.
>>12214868also I am well aware that this opinion will probably get people pointing at Captain Wayne but that's just survivorship bias, for every Captain Waybe we have 3-4 cool mods that never got made because the autist got tangled in scope creep trying to make a TC

>>12214868They would have still been stuck making a huge TC or a immensely bloated gameplay mod instead of a commercial game using the engine. See the stuff people like Batandy have said about the immense effort that goes into making TCs, or the gameplay dudes like Kegan and Term who have not be wrangling the same wackass engine for the rest of their lives.

>>12214881This is true, but we might at least have playable builds of those projects if they were being developed as TCs or mods. The way it is we end up with "me wan make real game mak real money" and then the half baked thing that might very well have a completely functional gameplay portion is unreleased.Space Cats Saga is cool.Space Pirate is cool but the way it's stuck playable only on the time attack mode is retarded.Kegan's whole portfolio is what I want to see more of. Whomever made Treasuretech, I don't remember, also. Serious mods too obviously.my point was that the people who might have developed big fatass gameplay mods or TCs are still doing that but under the pretense of "developing a real game" so they don't release partially finished but playable-with-other-wads builds anymore, at least most of them don't.
>>12214886Ultra64 made TreasureTech, and he's working on TreasureTech Land, slowly but surely. Also I'm glad you enjoy my portfolio of work. I'm hoping Roland and RELIC will be received just as well.

Money ruins everything, part 673
>>12214906Yeh. Roland will be a mod based off Burl_Tumd, play as a security officer dude with a bunch of smaller prototype weapons, and also a life stealing sword bound to altfire, lower on the power scale for shit I make, I wanna make something vanilla-ish there. I'm hoping Roland'll be simple enough for you boys to just throw it up for SNS with no worries.RELIC will be like a sequel set after that with the same protag, but older and all cyber-ized. That one will take more after DAKKA with its gameplay, with the big gimmick there being a meter that be like a devil trigger/tome of power to soup up your guns. You'll still have a sword on altfire, just a different one. I wanna experiment and see if I can make Ys style bump combat with the sword.Specifically holding the button for bump style combat, or pressing the button once to slash with it twice before sheathing it, kinda taking notes from Tower of Druaga's sword there, really. Also I'm gonna try voicing this protag because I wanna try voice acting stuff, that sounds fun and the most I've done so far is some monster sounds for one of Skelegant's projects, and construction worker guys in GS3, vocaroo related.https://vocaroo.com/1gFVpij5qfwo

Having replayed Redneck Rampage recently, I was wondering if anyone ever did a replacer/TC type thing of RR for Doom? Like weapons or a texture replacer or enemy pack or all of those in one? And curious if any of the other Build games got similar mods for Doom. I know Blood and Duke have some. Not sure about the others.

>>12215042correction/addendum>but he won't release it because he thinks of himself as "le real game dev," not as in "i'm too good for mere modbabbies" or whatever, but as in "i will finish it, it's done when it's done okay," but it's never done and never released

I'm starting Build engine games tonight with The Duke. Which is better for a first-time playthrough, BuildGDX, Rednukem, or something else?
I'm trying Quake4. Lookin' good.
I'm not a fan of GZ commercial releases, period. I understand the why and how, I just don't like it that what was a space more focused on just making cool shit has been tainted by the idea of commercializing your hobby for clout or cash. In practical terms this isn't a big deal since 90% of mods will default to being just mods, but I dislike the idea on principle and am surprised no AA studio from outside the immediate Doom space tried pulling a fast one by using GZ.I imagine it exists in this limbo because GZ is just stupid compared to a proper engine made for powering game, rather than a cludge of a software that can do that and play a game older than most people who use it.That said, I'd still buy a hypothetical game if it was handled like Rekkr. Most of it is free, so the tone goes from "buy my shit" to "help me out and you get more of this thing you might like".
shit, I ran out of ammo
>>12215096>I imagine it exists in this limbo because GZ is just stupid compared to a proper engine made for powering gameBetter off with Godot or Unity or anything else than the disgusting shit you have to do, to achieve crap that's simple in engines built for making games with.

Anyone else playing the Doom collection on PS3? That's how I've been playing it. I've played through...>Ultimate Doom>Doom II>TNT>Plutonia>Master Levels>No Rest for the LivingI love them all, but TNT is overall my favorite. I like the bigger mazy levels tech base/city of Doom II and TNT just takes that to the extreme. Plutonia is hard as fuck and has some really good levels, but too many monster closet deaths to learn for my liking. Ulitimate Doom was fun, but after playing the others and coming back to it, it's just too basic and I miss the new enemies, SS and the more complex creative levels.Doom II is amazing all the way through, and gets very hard to pistol start in the later 1/3.Master levels have some of my absolute favorite and most memorable levels in Doom, like Attack on Titan, Titan Manor, Bloodsea Keep, The Elevator and the Black Tower. No Rest for the Living is also amazing with probably some of the most tightly well-made levels ever, like Vivisection and The Earth Base. Maybe the hardest levels in the game too, especially on pistol start. I could barely do all of Doom II pistol starts on UV. Thanks for listening.

>>12214845>super stripped back dehacked-based mods becoming all the rage lately?>It feels like doom modding is purposely regressing technicallyIts probably worth noting that dehacked has actually made a lot of advancements in the last 5 or so years with DEHEXTRA and DSDHACKED, alongside MBF21 being a new complevel standard. Whats possible now certainly wasn't back when Eviternity 1 came out.
>>12215624I'm sure the new standard will make great strides and achieve impressive thingsbut at the same time I feel that the fundamental nature of the standard will prevent it from doing much of the cool stuff that I enjoy seeing in doom mods.I don't see something like... Just played Doom for the first time. It's pretty fun. The only gay part is looking for the exit in some maps for several minutes after killing everything.

Just in time for the holiday (singular)
>>12216221 Well I don't mean this level in particular, the map I recently played with that gimmick was Midnight Hunting from the SnackPack3 mapjam - and to be frank, all maps with this feature seem to be part of some prior mapjams from the Quaddicted Discord. I would assume that it's probably some custom 'give' script being used to cause that forced disarment, as upon the instant that map loads you can open the ~console to see a message "You recieve -25 shells" print itself before you even get spawned into the level first.

>>12217064Oh no, pd is definitely capable, as are AD, Drake, Keep, I imagine Alkaline and Sacrilege, I haven't checked their devkits much.Pic related is from the pd_3.0 manual.https://quaketastic.com/files/single_player/mods/progs_dump_manual_300.pdfWhen loading progs_dump3 in Trenchbroom, and selecting a worldspawn entity, look for the "reset" key value. I'll screenshot and post in a minute.
>>12217064You may know this already, but just in case, PD is unique because what dumptruck_ds made pd for was for modders to have a really decent foundation before trying to make their own mod in case they don't want to use AD, or what have you. Problem is you'll need to learn QuakeC.
>>12217074>>12217078To further the point, Violent Rumble 2 was built on pd, and so has the reset key value.
