Also there's this weird bug where the music gets quieter when the song loops and I'm pretty sure it's the musicvolume stuff in sndinfo because it doesn't happen when I comment all of them out. That's with the custom music off(maybe also playing Doomslayer when it's on). There might be something with the monster count, too, because I was missing a monster on the last level despite everything being dead.

True, but 4.14.3 fixes an annoying automap bug from 4.14.2. That's as far as I'm willing to go, though. Won't be making the switch to 5.0, regardless of the shiny new toys it brings. If GZDoom ever comes back, I'd likely go back to that, both for playing and mod development. It's chicken man or bust. For the time being I can safely target 4.14.x to satisfy both camps.

the issue with hellrider vengeful crashing on the mall massacre battle in dbp77 map08 with project malice enemies turned out to not be the fault of hellrider vengeful, but nashgore next
guess it just got to be too much
after finishing the wad i have to say i didn't really miss out on much
map09, the eponymous Economy of the Dead, is just kind of an uninspired slaughter arena that shits out a couple waves at you, kind of a disappointing end to the wad compared to Grief Arbiter

Yeah. Because I'm sure there's some fancy Zscript wizardry or some other new bullshit that GZDoom has had for awhile that could be the answer to my problem. But keeping myself locked with Zandronum compatibility really takes a coffee table to my shins.

So ultimately the music volume thing is a problem that I don't think I can fix, which kinda pisses me off.

You people are ignoring the part where Graf has been right about a number of things, and also doing a bulk of the work on developing GzDoom, while the new crew of UzDoom just HAD to drag Rachael along, someone who NOBODY in the overall community actually likes or trusts as a person, because they're an infamously toxic and narcissistic manipulator.
I'll remind you that Rachael was the exact same person who hijacked Skulltag from Brad Carney, and that they're permabanned from DoomWorld for various reasons, and that's before we get into later skullduggery which has already been discussed to death.

Yeah, Graf has a LOT of flaws and makes some bad decisions, a lot of the other contributors (many who left for UzDoom) have actually made good additions too, and maybe UzDoom really will work out and successfully replace GzDoom for good.
But can you HONESTLY fucking blame people for NOT immediately getting on their knees to throat UzDoom without question? Can you NOT see various non-political reservations which someone might have?

You could look at it through that angle, but you can't ignore that various lefty trans people in the general GzDoom community exhibit an open disgust towards Rachael as a person (and for very good reasons), and some would point out where the perspective from UzDoom's devs isn't 100% honest or truthful, and that they're giving Graf less credit than he's still owed for the final blowup causing the split.

I really like the arsenal. Making your shotgun a starting weapon that's a solid workhorse but still keeping it in check with a two shot -> reload system means you're going to want other weapons still, you can get a lot done with the shotgun alone though, you just have to respect the reload or you get fucked.
Fists are pretty good, the knuckle crack radial stun move is powerful as hell and the charged lightning punch is satisfying. Chaingun's good, boom brew is VERY fun to use.
I don't make enough use of the cannon and shock weapon though, primarily because I can unleash so much carnage with just the shotgun, chaingun, and bottles.

Enemy roster is pretty varied and the basic gun toting goons are very aggressive, it's actually cool how the shotgunners rush you to get in close to land a meatshot, I've never really seen that done before, boxing dudes are fun to fight as they block and have big damage resistance unless you run in and kick their asses over. Bottle carrying seagulls are complete bastards but they always make their presence known, and I appreciate that a lot. The grenadier goons are also menaces and I always hit them with a bottle. The construction worker dudes are kinda weird though, I've never found them too much of a threat but they take a shitload of punishment from most weapons, but a single bottle kills them. Later on in the game there's a high tier fish monster that's a cross between Quake's Fiend and an Archvile, they'll fuck you up real bad.

Wayne's a really fun protagonist, love his antics during the cutscenes and some of the shit he says during gameplay is funny.
I want this game to succeed. You boys should go play it.

It's something I'd thought about a fair bit, having a good melee option and a mini shotgun for the pistol replacement so you're going between the two while getting stuff with more range / firerate to fill out the gaps, possibly with dispersion pistol-like upgrades for said mini shotgun to keep it from falling into irrelevancy.

hard is fun but it's intended for people who beat the game a few times already. you can get through it if you think harder about every marine encounter. flank them, use snarks, use tripmines, etc. one thing that's not immediately obvious is that your pistol does a lot more damage than the MP5 and it's almost always pinpoint accurate. use it to chip at their HP then finish them off with another weapon at closer range.

So add something sweet. If not sugar, then maybe honey, or fruit or whatever. Use white chocolate milk if you've got that where you live, it's great for cereal. It looks almost exactly like regular milk, so it preserves the aesthetics, plus you don't get that sugary slush at the bottom of the bowl.

Not to needlessly dogpile, but this is the retro fps thread.

I dropped the original Marathon after 2 maps. In 2 maps, I just was not impressed with any of it. The odd, comic book style enemies against the primitive FPS colony ship Marathon corridors, the fact that the corridors didn't look like a colony ship at all, and the guns that felt worse than Doom in every way. Couldn't stand it. I know its primary legacy is its writing, but the game just isn't enough for me to find out how good it is. The most positive thing I can say about it, is in Reelism 2.1, it's always fun to get that slot where everyone turns into the Marathon protagonist.

I'm into Marathon about as much as I am into say Half-Life, and Marathon 1 just isn't that fun as a game.
2 and Infinity on the other hand easily surpass it. The art's better, the sounds are better, the gunplay is significantly improved thanks to the shotgun(s) and the gameplay itself is better.
Infinity's level design is actually pretty damn insane in a good way, even if the only actual new content boils down to one new weapon that shines underwater (even though there's much less water in the game), one new NPC in the vacbob and some recolors.
There have been some attempts to revisit Marathon 1 with the style of its sequels, but that mostly comes from stuff like Marathon Eternal and thus are confined to a story arc or two. I'd kill for a proper remake.

I actually prefer M1 to the sequels for pure combat. The AI spends a lot less time waiting/between actions in the original and more time just pursuing you, which combined with usually narrower quarters makes things more intense. Enforcers having hitscan (or hitscan-like; not sure which) attacks is also a lot more menacing than the arachnotron-like attacks they have in M2/MInf. Hulks, while obviously HP sinks and not too hard to avoid if you know the layout of the map, introduce living obstacles that M2/Minf have no parallel to, more like super-Pinkies. The enemy security bots in M1, while only featured in one level iirc, are maybe my single favorite enemies in any FPS, in how they strafe you and basically take cover by patrolling hallways perpendicular to your location, and in how aggressive they are with the machine gun/grenade combo. I also love how if you shoot them with a non-fatal grenade/rocket, the physical force causes them to dip in the same direction until they recalibrate their correct altitude.

Maybe a hot take but I think M1 had a better balanced arsenal too. The dual shotties in M2/MInf are legendary, but too sparse on ammo to make regular use of, it's almost more of a temp/super-weapon. The flamethrower in the original is almost like an ammo-consuming chainsaw, cuts through everything and effectively has permanent hit-stun, extremely powerful, whereas the sequels make half of the enemies resistant to it and there's almost no reason to even use it in M2.

I agree that M1 has more interesting monsters that 2 and Infinite cut from their rosters, but a few (like the ticks that blow up) were reasonable enough. Ultimately, I dislike M1 more for the level design and for how experimental (as in they probably weren't too familiar with their own tools), it still makes the Marathon more like a man-made anthill. I suppose it makes sense in context, but the game never quite won me over.

I still would kill for a remake with the best of 1 and Durandal, either way. 1 had some genuinely scary moments and in general was fun, 2 had better-feeling guns and a more cohesive artstyle.

Roland will be a mod based off Burl_Tumd, play as a security officer dude with a bunch of smaller prototype weapons, and also a life stealing sword bound to altfire, lower on the power scale for shit I make, I wanna make something vanilla-ish there. RELIC will be like a sequel set after that with the same protag, but older and all cyber-ized. That one will take more after DAKKA with its gameplay, with the big gimmick there being a meter that be like a devil trigger/tome of power to soup up your guns. You'll still have a sword on altfire, just a different one. I wanna experiment and see if I can make Ys style bump combat with the sword.
Specifically holding the button for bump style combat, or pressing the button once to slash with it twice before sheathing it, kinda taking notes from Tower of Druaga's sword there, really.
Also I'm gonna try voicing this protag because I wanna try voice acting stuff, that sounds fun and the most I've done so far is some monster sounds for one of Skelegant's projects, and construction worker guys in GS3, vocaroo related.

I'm not a fan of GZ commercial releases, period. I understand the why and how, I just don't like it that what was a space more focused on just making cool shit has been tainted by the idea of commercializing your hobby for clout or cash. In practical terms this isn't a big deal since 90% of mods will default to being just mods, but I dislike the idea on principle and am surprised no AA studio from outside the immediate Doom space tried pulling a fast one by using GZ.
I imagine it exists in this limbo because GZ is just stupid compared to a proper engine made for powering game, rather than a cludge of a software that can do that and play a game older than most people who use it.
That said, I'd still buy a hypothetical game if it was handled like Rekkr. Most of it is free, so the tone goes from "buy my shit" to "help me out and you get more of this thing you might like".

see thats what i was tryin to think of how to redo. in PB we moved away from actor based hitboxes for all the shit like that, instead everything is handeled from the bullet projectiles
if i do the same hitbox detection system from the bullets on the enemies instead i should be able to replicate all of that without the need for extra damagetype patches

I love them all, but TNT is overall my favorite. I like the bigger mazy levels tech base/city of Doom II and TNT just takes that to the extreme. Plutonia is hard as fuck and has some really good levels, but too many monster closet deaths to learn for my liking.

Ulitimate Doom was fun, but after playing the others and coming back to it, it's just too basic and I miss the new enemies, SS and the more complex creative levels.

Doom II is amazing all the way through, and gets very hard to pistol start in the later 1/3.

Master levels have some of my absolute favorite and most memorable levels in Doom, like Attack on Titan, Titan Manor, Bloodsea Keep, The Elevator and the Black Tower.

No Rest for the Living is also amazing with probably some of the most tightly well-made levels ever, like Vivisection and The Earth Base. Maybe the hardest levels in the game too, especially on pistol start. I could barely do all of Doom II pistol starts on UV.

auto shotty's alt fire is arguably stronger than the DB in 2.0 and can ricochet but the trade off is that you burn through more ammo and unless you got the drum upgrade for it takes about as long to reload as the pump shotty.

base super shotty in 3.0 is the gun i feel makes all the other guns useless as it can kill most monsters in like one to two hits. meanwhile the quad barrel upgrade for it feels more like a downgrade.

That all works, you can also still do the same as every other ZDoom-based port of using the -config launch command to point to whatever ini you like so long as there's no spaces in the location.

Well I don't mean this level in particular, the map I recently played with that gimmick was Midnight Hunting from the SnackPack3 mapjam - and to be frank, all maps with this feature seem to be part of some prior mapjams from the Quaddicted Discord.
I would assume that it's probably some custom 'give' script being used to cause that forced disarment, as upon the instant that map loads you can open the ~console to see a message "You recieve -25 shells" print itself before you even get spawned into the level first.

The boss itself is alright; several color-coded attacks with different patterns that you have to pay attention to, plus either the boss will occasionally teleport around or the map geometry itself shifts for certain attacks which is a nice twist.

What dragged the final fight down me is that the boss teleports away between stages and the map unleashes a horde of enemies that are dealt with by simply circle strafing around the arena, which just feels like unchallenging tedium to pad out the fight.

I think its just hard to do a final boss in general. Very much so in a fps, cause how do you build up some cosmic entity that you literally just beat by shooting it, I don't mind as long as the concept is good, I like the mod that turns the icon of sin into a boss you actually shoot at, that one was neat.

Speaking of the gaslighter I was too busy to post here lately but last time I directly posted about how much I hate his faggotry and - as much as I'm surprised to be saying this - I got a very fair 1 day ban for participating in a flamewar with which I actually agree.
He wants us to get mad and fall to his level. What should always be done instead is what he pretends to do with the targets of his trolling - never give him (you)s, never respond directly and at most quickly correct his horseshit and move on. Which is what some people in that thread were actually doing so I'm the one who fucked up.
I don't know if he got a deserved 5 day ban or whatever the max length for this kind of thing is but if he did we may finally have reasonable mods who are actually helpful. Hope I don't jinx it.

I don't know if it's just me but I am a little lukewarm on Captain Wayne's Riptide Rampage mode. It takes quite a few waves before things actually get interesting, but then it quickly shifts into an absolute clusterfuck.
This frustrates me because I do think Wayne's combat is pretty good.
