Garfield: Caught in the Act - The Lost Levels is finally getting released
>>
>>12246009
I was obsessed with this game as a kid. Best Garfield game ever maybe.
>>
>>12246009
>PAY US.
>WONT RELEASE TOUGH, NO PIRACY!

Fuck off
>>
>>12246027
>WONT RELEASE TOUGH, NO PIRACY!
I don't see why they would not. The exact same thing happened with the NES prototype of SimCity. Eventually released after a year or two of wait.
>>
i'd rather have the japanese sega channel and meganet exclusives
>>
Garfield Lasagna World Tour (technically not retro but its on the ps2) > Caught in the Act > Big Fat Hairy Deal > Tail of Two Kitties (ps2) > Garfield Labyrinth > Garfield no Isshukan > Garfield Saving Arlene
>>
>>12246027
VGHF does release all stuff to public, they just tend to sit on it for a long time until they have enough information to publish a fancy history article and video to accompany released roms. They exist to raise awareness about video game history preservation (I know, meme buzzword) among normies (i.e. government and business lobbying groups), so they want people to talk about their activity in public. This contrasts highly with approach employed by groups like Hidden Palace which release tons of stuff all the time, but not a single person online talks about 99% of content they release.
>>
>>12246009
>leftist twitter
>>
>>12246171
Yeah... posting this shit on bluesky is certainly reaching the mass market!
I hate these kind of "people" with all of my being.
>>
>>12246009
Shit game sadly.
>>
>>12246280
Is it actually leftist or liberal dogshit twitter?

>>12246124
>awareness about video game history preservation (I know, meme buzzword) among normies (i.e. government and business lobbying groups)
The word is NORMALFAG newfriend. I don't know if videogame preservation is something in the interests of big nose lobbying groups unless they can launder money through it somehow.
>>
>>12246423
normalfag != normie. A normalfag is a weirdo who is obsessed with the idea of normalcy and being normal, usually because he's very much abnormal and trying hard to suppress it

What the fuck are you talking about? The PS4 is retro now you're way off. The only reason the rules haven't been updated here is because admins forgot this board exists.
>>
>>12246298
Maybe because it's not pay 4 engagement like twitter and the default front page isn't crawling with rage bait nor is almost everyone using it a bot?
>>

NTA.
>nor is almost everyone using it a bot?
This is plain cope.
>>
>>12246009

I'm glad the levels aren't lost, but I wouldn't exactly say them being stuck in a foundation's archives where the public can't access them is "released". It's especially weird since if they asked Jim Davis he'd probably give them express permission to release it like with the 2600 Garfield proto.
>>
>>12247509
>not pay 4 engagement
Instead it is basically zero engagement unless you're one of the blessed leftwing political accounts. It's funny watching artists and the like huff copium about how great bsky is, when their art gets basically zero traction on there and they STILL have to rely on Twitter, warts and all. All social media sucks, unless you happen to get lucky, or pay/astroturf for engagement.

>>
>>12247629
If it was about preservation they'd be anonymous autists on the internet so they could dump whatever they find without getting in trouble.

>>
>>12248081
They want to get in trouble, they want to challenge the existing American law to allow digital libraries (like Internet Archive) to provide copies of orphaned software above board, without corporations suing them for enabling piracy, like book publishers constantly do. They want to make "abandonware" a real thing that exists in legal texts, not just a nebulous idea that people believe in because they want it to be real.

>>
>>12248613
Who cares? It's not like devs are getting money from it, it's just corporate machine running. They don't have to make a press conference or anything, just upload it on gofile.io or archive.org and post a link.
Glover dev leaked his sources specifically because some twats were reviving it to milk money from a project they had nothing to do with. More devs should do this.
>>
>>12248662
Pissing off The Walt Disney Company is a bit riskier affair than pissing off Piko Interactive.

I didn't say they release everything they own. I said they release some stuff once in a while, which is more than you can say about many other preservation groups (Andrew Borman, Game Preservation Society.)
>>

This game is awesome, when I found it in the 2000's I thought it was crazy that Sega didn't promote stuff like this to compete with DKC. This has almost as good graphics as Gex.

>>
All I'm gonna say is, I'm glad it's out.

>>12246013
Same here. It just looks really good. I took screenshots and MSPaint cropped the sprites just to have Garfield sprites.
That said, I don't remember the game being very good
>>
>>12247374
Ps3 is still modern and lacks the innovation and design of older games. Nothing retro about ps3s older games that are just like modern games but higher in resolution. Everything got figured out design wise for modern games and its all the same today.
>>
>>12249363
>Oh look, Pulseman is still in Japanese, just as I remembered. I guess this btfo's the ppl who insisted there was an official English ROM
Probably misremembering how much of the game was already in English and even had English voices. The most actual Japanese was in the intro cutscene.
>>
>>12249180
>leftist
People still force this term?
Going by the default front page. It's mainly, animal and nature photos, like pic related, works of art, sports and a few /pol/shit articles.

Most of the material comes from a former employee at Sega who kept archives of pretty much everything at home.
>marketing material
>business docs, presentations
>usage metrics
And best of all, the fan mail sent to Sega - some art was then featured in future menu updates. This includes what could possibly be the first Sonic OC, pic related.

Speaking of Pulseman, I'm testing out the SEGA Channel ROM and I noticed that they fixed the invincibility bug you could get in the cartridge version by spamming uncharged volteccers.

No, the Wii virtual console and Nintendo Switch Online ROMs are from the physical cart. "Version 1.0" if you will.
The SEGA Channel uses a "Version 1.1" it seems based on my testing.

What about the backflip high kick? That move is so busted that once I found out about it, I easily trashed any boss by using it.

Every website shows you more of what you engage with. If you go on bluesky and click on and reply to a bunch of political shit (which most people can't stop themselves from doing) guess what it's going to think you want to see?
>>
So... Has anyone played Garfield: The Lost Levels?

Bonehead the Barbarian is a pretty annoying level. There's too many fucking parachute penguins throwing ice blocks at you, the level's gimmick (the slippery slopes) controls arkwardly, and there's this part where you're supposed to grab to the ledge to proceed, but it's pretty hard to do most of the time.
>>
>>12250056
Also nerfed I'm afraid. It no longer gives full invincibility when used.
The final boss is actually quite hard now that you can't spam flash kicks or uncharged volteccers to become invincible.

Aladdin is not a particularly innovative game but it's very solid platformer. From 900 Genesis games the source code is available for only about 10. It would be interesting even if it were Tetris or PacMan, because there's so little of it but Aladdin is actually a good game. And it's the whole backup they're hoarding with assets and tools, which is even rarer find and would be useful for other games and projects.
>>
>>12249868
>There’s nothing interesting about Aladdin source code.
Why not releasing it there?
>>
>>12250853
*then
>>
This makes me very happy that the Sega Channel is essentially completely archived. There's some competition builds left to get but it's otherwise perfect.

:D
>>
I have a copy of the Aladdin source code. In the source code there are files that give Aladdin a pussy. This is why they cannot release the source code.
>>
Now do the same with Satellaview. Find some former St.Giga employees who took home company property when they went out of business and try to find roms there.
>>
>>12251330
1. There's plenty of preserved Satellaview stuff, mostly because in that service, ROMs were saved in memory packs.
2. There's no way any Japanese national would cooperate into leaking shit.
>>
>>12251336
The first point is true, but to this day Satellaview preservation remains a lottery. We have roms online today because people keep buying every single memory pak which goes on sale, praying that it has undumped content on it. The situation was significantly better than with Sega Channel, but we are still years away from a complete Satellaview romset, if that is even possible with current methods.
>>
>>12251343
What sucks about the Satellaview situation is that there's a number of cartridges from the tail end of the Super Famicom's run that use the memory paks for storing save data, so whenever you buy a memory pak there is a high chance any important Satellaview data was overwritten some by some random kid's shitty RPG make game that's 90% default layouts.
>>
>>12251320
Nothing wrong with that. Everyone loves a pussy, even Elton John.
>>
>>12251364
I always wondered what those carts were about. I knew something went in them, but had no idea it was literally the same memory packs as the satella.
>>
>>12247509

I really didn't expect a Wrath of the Demon conversion, its barely been mentioned. Its a fairly well known shadow of the beast clone for Amiga and Atari ST. It might be bigger news than Flintstones and Garfield which were known for a long time.
>>
>>12250297
Supposedly, Pulseman didn't get broadcasted via SEGA Channel until 1995, an entire year after the JP release.

Just played. Wow that sucked! But I'm not sure what I expected, really. I guess with a name like "Lost Levels" I was hyped that it'd be more like SMB2J, but that's already what the Game Gear version offers.
None of the three short levels feel finished, but clearly they put their best foot forward and presented it from most playable to least. The viking stage seems to basically be an ice-themed version of the prehistoric stage. Game Gear sort of saved this stage but like much of the game gave it a completely different layout. The space stage becomes a maze if you aren't careful, I think a few remnants of this actually ended up in the final game so I can understand why the PC version repurposed it as a final level (also the PC version may be a bit more finished, the entire background is wavy there where on Genesis it cuts off strangely). There's a point ehere if you feel trapped then remember your melee weapon will make you reach the warp. El Train is where I had to use savestates, wtf was this level? It sure sounded cool, but I'm most glad this was cut since the implementation is the worst of the three.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it got preserved. I love that there's some creator commentary on why the stages had to go. I hope future gamedevs can look back on that and learn that not all ideas are good ones! But man, I can see why these lost levels stayed lost for so long.

So they have Atari HDDs and maybe floppies with the source code and stuff and instead of posting images on archive.org like a normal person, so anyone can have a go at it, he elected himself an top expert in data recovery and he will do everything himself and curate shit. For Awesome Possum source and who knows what else he decided it's unrecoverable and he will hoard it. Jesus fucking Christ what a faggot.

I don't want it for utilitarian reasons, but historical ones. Original source code has comments, and the original variables the many developers used. It's cool window into how it was to develop games during that time. Especially because they converted it from x86 ASM to C.
