How gimmicky should gameplay mods be? Should some kind of mechanical novelty drive a player's interest compared to simply having a robust selection of guns?

Same reason a lot of not so good games got notoriety, anon: people got interested in them much later after the fact because of things that happened later down the line, such as people talking about it, youtubers making videos on them and fans of games that share some DNA with it (Halo in this case) wanting to see where everything began.

It's not too different from the Nu Doom-classic Doom pipeline.

I like Marathon because it's different, flawed and strange but also strangely competent in spite of its insane ambition. Also, the title music in Durandal and Infinity makes me cum.

How do you get ammo for it? Is it just powerful but in limited supply so you have find something else? I mean the thing about the original pistol is that it is so weak that you want to upgrade it as soon as possible, so you need to retain that property of making the player want to find an upgrade. It's nothing too removed from vanilla, I'm not very creative. Pistol ammo would occasionally spawn alongside ammo for the chaingun replacement (so anywhere vanilla bullets appear), and be guaranteed in backpacks as well. The only weapon that doesn't correlate to vanilla is a rifle that lets you use the slot 4 ammo more accurately.

The theming of the mod is kinda like Doom happening in the late 80s/90s. Space exploration never progressed farther than launching satellites for radio communication, because the Korea war escalated into WW3 and once that ended, the death toll was so bad demons began invading the physical plane because they thought mankind would all die anyway.
Suffice to say hell fucked around and found out long before any god had to lift a finger, even though they had plenty of people who showed up there in recent times because of man's many ways of killing his peer. So you know, something like Trench Crusade if it wasn't retarded and had a cold war background.
I think the protagonist would be like a commando sent to stamp out the remaining hell-infested areas, of which there are more than you'd expect. If I had it in me I'd like for him to have a guardian angel as a companion, even though he is (supposedly) an atheist after all he's been through.

I did not care for Call of The Void nor its recent Jam. Yes, it insists upon itself. It looks good and the enemies are unique but there's been a trend in Quake mods for years now where the appeal is the eye candy and not actual mechanics or level design. The QBJ3 is another great example that insists upon itself.

They have several bugs that can be found right away with just the water draining mechanic on the first level Barnacle. Quake is a series where story doesn't matter but they keep trying to force it into the series and it's even cringier than expected. Not even in a fun shlock type of way. The enemies are annoying and don't fit the levels they are placed in which are often cramped that create terrible flow.

No. This sounds like an upgrade for your starter pistol 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through the game. Not starting out right away. Either ammo will have to be limited to prevent it from being OP or it will have to be weak and therefore useless the second a better weapon is found which means it's a waste of time on your part to code it. It could work in the sense that you give it unlimited ammo and it has an alt fire that 1 shots lower enemies but is on a timer so it can't be spammed and abused. For example, it takes 4-5 shots to down a Doom shotgunner. The alt fire will kill them instantly and pierce enemies in line and takes 7-15 seconds to recharge.

Hm, you do have a point. I don't want to do infinite ammo for this mod and the upgrade idea could be cool as well, but I also strongly dislike intentionally weak starter weapons. I think keeping it as a perma upgrade works. Maybe make it a secret that players can find. If you find it, you keep it and enjoy the benefits. Debatable if you shouldactually get it later on in the game or it's just a secret upgrade. Like finding a RL on the first level and then in Level 5 vs it's the only RL in the episode.

Are you referring to Call of the Void? Leptis Magna is my favorite AD map in part because of the story it tells and how it tells it, and I don't recall CotV putting in anything remotely to the same degree. The "story" doesn't go much further beyond the premise.

Case in point: the map Barnacle forces up dialogue for almost every action you do like key cards or activating a switch along with making the player wait around for SUPER EPIC GAYMUR scripted event. I don't remember any of the CotV story "prompts" because I didn't care, still enjoyed the mod. A lot of Quakeulf's maps are notorious for some iffy/obnoxious popups and they're still amazing. They were incredibly subdued in Sonic Mayhem, however, and even decently well written at the end.

Caleb might be my favorite voiced retro shooter char. I like them all and Caleb's a bit of an edge lord but Stefan Weyte or whatever his name is puts a lot of charm into delivering his zingers. I still hear "here's to not lookin' at you, kid" when I'm playing other shooters.
