This was spun off from the panic over violence in media that started in the 80s, mostly fueled by the religious right. School shootings were novel, so they felt the need for a new novel explanation for them. Linking Doom is especially weird since it was by then a very dated game but this was most likely the first time boomers heard of the game. It also had "satanic" imagery, which was perfect. I didn't have a PC back then, and didn't play Doom, so they made the game sound like a mass shooter simulator of a guy going around murdering people. Then I played it and the humanoid enemies are literally demonic zombies.
