Here's the rough gyst of what I want to do for stage 4. I'm prioritizing survival over score but Ian's routing kind of lends itself to getting coins anyways. This feels pretty satisfying to do even though it's not as tight as it could be.

ROB is a high damage zoning character, a tank, he's challenging to use! GOOD! his closest parallels would be DoDonPachi heavy fat ships (Type C style shot), Ketsui wide-shot options, but with the responsiveness of slow Raiden ships, and that means he's BASED.
Yes his magic is overpowered (that's a good thing) he melts bosses with his dragon setup. Basically he is very pure classic shmup chunky archetype, something you young zoomers are too STUPID to appreciate and too DUMB to properly ROUTE FOR. Rob is a route-heavy character in a fast reflex-heavy game, get good or get out. I don't care about Ian 2-ALLS, might as well play AINE or some boring super fast, tiny hitbox bullet hell cookie cutter ship.
This is why shmups will never get popular because people refuse to play the correct ships and have valid fun.

There are fundamental skills, but like any sport, most of it is reactive, which is why practice (not routing) is so heavily emphasized.

You can program almost all of the inputs to a shmup ahead of time and it will work 100% of the time. What's left is basic bullet reading skills for RNG patterns, which this community hates.

Shmups are entirely gameplay, you can't shut the gameplay off and like soak up the environmental storytelling or whatever. Like if you set it to a difficulty where a boss fires 90% less bullets, obviously that's gunna be shit. Shmups already have a granular difficulty. Like you have a 1-all, you have 2 loops worth of resources at your disposal to clear 1 loop. Mushihimesama has an original mode that speeds up the bullets but makes the patterns less complex. There are shmups that are easier than others to begin with. No one is designing a shmup that only 0.001% people can play. It's disengenous to assert that journalist mode is the intended experience for these games, or any game for that matter. The games are like 20 minutes long, they aren't meant to be bulldozed through, and someone bulldozing through a game on easy mode once a week because they like "duh community" is not into any genre. It was the same exact shit with fighting games. Like if you just try a little you'll see what the actual appeal is. Just be honest about it.

My one complaint about this game is that the starting stages are fucking bad. Like yeah I know they're all randomized, but the rank isn't. I've seen people praise the scoring system in this game over other psyiko games but I think that's wrong. Chaining in gunbird 2 keeps the early stages interesting, and while coins enable some fancy maneuvers in dragon blaze, it just doesn't feel as interesting to me in the beginning.

Honestly no, I'm just most going for the big pops and the coinheads. I get the tech bonuses on 1 and 2 because they are easy and about as fast as killing the boss. I think the most I exited stage 1 with was 170k, but generally it's like 140k. The default stage 1 from cab reset is air stage, and the enemies kind of don't even shoot at you. So I just pop the bugs when they converge on a point and alternate dragon shot between middle and left because that's where the coinhead is anyways. It just doesn't feel like there's anything super exciting to do and the game doesn't really start getting fun until stage 3. I did mess around with the second loop stages a bit, I'll probably die immediately on the loop but I figure why not mess with it anyways, and 2-1 is like a totally different stage where you're doing a bunch of really dicey and cool restreams. In Gunbird 2 stage 1 you're doing like these really stylish sweeps, like you do a big sweep, grab a power up, chain a coin, sweep back and get the other power up, tap dodge the big mech that spawns to chain another coin, finish the mech, chain another coin, fly to the top and pop a turret, chain, melee down a mech, and then you have 5 more coins to chain together while you've got enemies doing aimed shots on you, and this is all in the span of like 15 seconds. I don't know man, the stage design in that game just feels super duper tight. Like there's no point in that game where I'm bored even though the first loop is easier than dragon blaze in my opinion.

I will never enjoy them because of the fundamental jankiness caused by the discrepancy between what the enemy's sprite is doing and what the bullets are doing. You can see in the webms itt that it's normal for random points in an enemy sprite that look like nothing to be bullet sources, and the bullets they produce can vary wildly in speed and pattern without any way of knowing what it might look like before it happens. This game really needed a better soundtrack. Gunbird and Strikers had some absolute bangers, and sengoku blade was pretty nice too, but dragon blaze soundtrack is kind of unremarkable.

Like there's no time for messing around with physics puzzles or exploring, it just doesn't work. You have to keep moving and you need to condense the game into something that can be completed in under an hour. There actually isn't even a lot of content cut, just showing the player where to go and what to do cuts down on playtime multiple hours, and the end result is pretty bad. And obviously the scoring system is pretty boring, half life wasn't designed to accommodate score.

So arcade games need interesting first stages that have more to them than just showcasing mechanics and dont feel like a chore to replay. Platformers achieve this by letting you complete levels faster, but this doesn't work in an autoscroller. So shmups use score. And it's interesting to see how those scoring systems evolve over the years into drastically deeper layers of complexity that dramatically change how stages are played.

Replay. I like the dragon strike mechanic in this game a lot, not one of my all time favorites but was still worth playing. Definitely a really cool and unique game that more people should play.

Of the Psikyo shooting games, it has the most memorable art style. It was the first Psikyo game I played in an actual arcade. I clearly remember some enemy shots seem to appear and travel way faster than the player could dodge or expect on a first ever encounter.

Psyiko has a really interesting middle ground between like an old toaplan dodge and shoot, and a bullet hell. Feels really nice to lead aimed shots in these games, and focke has that nice proximity damage subshot for point blanking which I like too. And of course focke's special shot is absolutely degenerate and it's fun to route around it as a resource.
