FOMO wasn't as big of a deal back then, so cranking through a short and sweet sub 3 hour linear campaign in a weekend or post school afternoon wasn't a biggie. If you were bad at the games you could always buy a guide or get a txt guide on the internet. You could also *gasp* have friends over to play the secret scenario so they could experience it through something else beside blurry screen shots or 144p real player video.Friction creates meaning.
