Hard to believe this is a Saturn game from 1997. If it wasn't for the dungeons 3D graphics, you'd think it's a game from the mid 00's.
The art style and sound design are absolutely stellar too, even down to the UI: even just navigating the menus is fun

A mid-2000s game that looked like this would've been mocked relentlessly for being outdated.

Anon, you're allowed to say old stuff looks cool without nonsensically piggybacking on more modern times

>If it wasn't for the dungeons 3D graphics, you'd think it's a game from the mid 00's
Nigga what. Fully 3D dungeons and blobbers were a common thing in the 90s, Soul Hackers is as 90s as it gets and one of the best SMT games
>>
>>12476163
>>12476289
It certainly would have been mocked. I still love it though, just how I still love Hackers. I miss that vibe of the early 90's when the internet was just becoming a real thing and it felt like this other world.

>>12476289
Actually you're right, I had forgotten for a moment that the 00's sucked. Sorry about that it won't happen again.

He said exclude the gameplay, even though I think Atlus was always kinda behind the times. Their SNES games releasing at the tail end of the console, all the way to still using pre-rendered backgrounds with Raidou on the ps2 by 2006. Their games were never graphical powehouses, but they didn't need to be because of the niche they filled

Why PSX? It should be Saturn, there is nothing wrong with it and the save file would be compatible with the bonus dungeon which (afaik) the PSX version doesn't have
>>
>>12476694
Probably never because the 3DS port got an official translation and actually improved the UI and the sluggish speeds some things ran at on the Saturn and PS1, so it's the definitive version of the game.
>>
>>12478654
The PlayStation port contained additional features including new story events, added features such as a Paradigm X casino, and a version of the Devil Zensho 2 dungeon.[18][19]
>>
>>12478684
Seeing as it's a handheld port from the 7th gen, I wonder what they ruined though...

>>12478685
Okay I didn't know, so it's basically: extra dungeon is embedded instead of a seperate disc (although it made it available to more people back in 99, in 2026 through emulation that's how I see it), some new dialogues and the casino. Don't really care for the casino myself but the extra dialogue might be cool since I like the characters.
I wonder if there is downgrade somewhere though, I mean just look at the Saturn to PSX ports of Grandia and Baroque for instance...
>>
>>12478684
i do like that they sped it up some, but the aesthetics are kinda ruined and sound quality too cause lol 3DS

>>
>>12478838
It seems a synth line was added to the PS1 and which remained on the 3DS.
I dunno, I can clearly hear the different in the mixing but I think the 3DS sounds more balanced. Saturn has a cool oomph to it though. PS1 seems the weakest to me.
Still I wouldn't mind playing with any of the 3
>>
>>12478838
This is wrong. I'm playing it as we speak, on the same sound system I'm listening to these youtube videos, and the Saturn version sounds nothing like that youtube video. I don't know where it's from, possibly some OST with different mixing, but it's not the in game version; which is a lot closer to what that PSX video sounds like (but not quite identical, Saturn version still has more oomph; assuming the PSX youtube video isn't incorrect as well).

Is there any content not on the 3DS version?
I believe 3DS is supposed to have more content than all, especially since the ultimate final extra boss is from Raidou vs the Soulless Army, which didn't exist when the Saturn original and PS1 port released. But is there any content removed from 3DS?
Also I never could beat this boss. Never could beat the Raidous anyways so I didn't get to see Yasomagatsu myself
>>
>>12481282
Look how they ruined such perfect UI. And what does a giant mecha have to do with this game? Adding shit from future games is always the lazy retarded way.

Time to add this port into the list of "shitty handheld ports". Handheld ports having to suck must be an universal scientific law.

Good riddance. The Saturn version should get translated so that everyone can experience the last oldschool dungeon crawler in the series and not some casualized handheld port for 7th gen babies.

prolly cause of what this anon said. that trekkies retard is supposed to be working on the saturn version, but if anyone was in that dragon crown thread a lil while ago then you should know hes doing nothing kek. Hopefully someone is working on the ps1 version tho
>>
>>12482705
The 3DS version is a port of the PS1 version with a UI facelift, a few new demons and 3 new optional postgame bosses. It's not a remake.
>>
>>12482747
3DS performs better than either Saturn or PS1.
It has the content from PS1 yes but 3DS is not just the PS1 ported as if it played the same because it does not
>>
Honestly when I made this thread I had no idea this game had a handheld port too. If I had known, I wouldn't have bothered. These things are always poison that make discussion of a game impossible, case in point.

I'm also starting to believe it's impossible to talk about this series pre 2000 games because 90% of the people responding will be fans of the post 2000 games; and there is such a divide between the two

>>12482773
>performs better

What is that supposed to mean? There is nothing wrong with the Saturn version performance. It never lags lag and the only load times in/out of battles and of the main menu take less than 2 seconds.
How can you perform "better" than top performance?
Looking at videos the load times in some cases look worse on 3DS. I mean they added a new "loading" logo that wasn't present in the original game, meaning they needed it.
From what I gather they made walking speed faster, but that's not "performance", that's just Soul removal...
oh and the game has voice acting? LOL, lmao haha oh boy you poor fucking zoomers
>>
>>12483487
>Soul removal
Not sure if you're just shitposting or not.
Also, I refuse to believe you're a Spul Hackers fan who didn't know about the 3DS version, probably the first thing that comes up if you google Soul Hackers.

RE4, and Fear came out in 2005 on consoles. This game looks more like, well a late 90s game. Quake came out in 1997 on this very console, and was both technically, and graphically more impressive (I've not gotten a chance to play Quake on the Saturn, but I assume it's not a scuffed port.)

Picrel is my team before Manitou (magic version). Where is yours?
Also sorry I don't keep up on every garbage port modern gaming has brought us. Why should I?

>Not sure if you're just shitposting or not.
You're not supposed to be zipping around like you're on roller stakers at high speed, it completlely kills the atmosphere the dungeons are going for. Not that there'd be much of that on a small 3DS screen and its shitty sound anyway.

He hasn't played it. He never will play it. He almost certainly watched a YouTube video about the Saturn version and then posted about it here hoping to make himself feel special for having heard about a le so obscure MegaTen game and is now having a tantrum that people who did play it are talking about it with genuine interest. He's this guy >>12470907 and the only reason he comes to this board is to gate keep and troll.

It's sad because I'd like to have a nice Soul Hackers thread, but yeah it seems this guys just wants to shitpost.
Also I don't remember my exact team before Manitou the first time, I played this game back in 2012, and my file save went beyond just Manitou because of the extra dungeon and bosses, I ended up with a completely different team

Where? Maybe i'm not the anon yoy think I am.
The only tantrum I'm seeing here is a guy angry that Soul Hackers is on a Nintendo handheld.
However, if you really played the original japanese on Saturn and you're not larping, that's cool as fuck too. I just wish you didn't ruin the thread with "remake bad", because yes, there's lots of butchered ports and remakes. Soul Hackers is not one of those, the 3DS one is an example of a good modern port.
>>
>>12484328
No I'm mocking the guy upset there's a port. He's the only one upset.
>>
>>12484289
Like I said on Saturn the load times in/out of combats and of the main menu or exiting places are 2 seconds at the most, it's really not an issue. In fact, coming from Devil Summoner I was impressed at how fast paced Soul Hackers was by comparison.
Judging from YT videos the entire gameplay of the 3DS shit, whether it's combat or walking around, looks as if it's in constant 200% fastforward mode in an emulator. Real ADHD zoomer edition stuff which completely destroys immersion, you're supposed to be in hostile environments with foreboding moody musics playing and the player is zooming around like in a Road Runner cartoon, it's ridiculous.
>>
>>12484351
>watched
Try playing for yourself instead.
Also, speed is adjustable, you can have original speed but also faster. Same with battle options, you can disable attack animations so battles are faster, but the game doesn't force that on you, it's an option and default as like the original
>>
>>12484347
I am also upset
>>
>>12484356

That's on Saturn too

Well I just beat the post game content (the stuff at the Sea Ark hotel, not the bonus disc dungeon yet). I mostly used the same team as I did for Manitou >>12484047
except that I replaced Valkyrie by Hanuman. Despite having slightly better attack stats, both at lvl60, Hanuman hits less hard than Valkyrie for some reasons, BUT he has Rakukada (def+ buff) which turned out to be useful against a couple of bosses.

Meaning I was still using Haoma for healing and Peri for buff/debuffs, because despite all my efforts I couldn't find better replacements. But despite being lvl 53-55 they held their own real well and only died from OHKO attacks.
When necessary I also used Nemyssa for healing, with the high agility I gave her it meant she'd heal at the start of a turn while Haoma would heal at the end of a turn, thus ensuring constant healing before and after the bosses attacks, thus avoiding bad luck deaths when bosses used their best attacks two turns in a row.

The only exception to this was the boss which uses either magic or physical reflection at the start of each turn, but it turns out I had the perfect solution for that boss in my team already. For the longest time I thought the boss was reading my commands and using either magic or physical reflection depending on what would have dealt the most dmg on my part, but turns out I was just having SHIT luck and it's completely random. Once I figured that out, I brought Valkyrie in and after buffs/debuffs I had her and ONLY her attack. Because she too, has physical damage reflection, meaning that in the event that the boss reflects her attack, she wouldn't get hit (and die) from the reflection. Then it was just a matter of time.
>>
The final boss, the giant fly, was a real bitch but with perseverence this team managed. I did bring in Garadua at some point to reduce the boss's accuracy which helped a bit (the boss has the ability to nullify your party's buffs but not its own debuffs).
Also prior to that I used the level up stat+ bonuses to raise the protag's int stat to 10 so he could wear the entire Masakado armor collection, I was wondering if that would been worth the (otherwise almost useless) int stat points, and YES IT WAS HOLY SHIT.

well now I'm going to check if I can figure out how to do all the demon trading at the pet shop so I can claim to have 100%'d the game and then check out if the bonus disc dungeon is worth playing or if it's some kind of lame masochist shit like Baroque's bonus dungeon
>>
>>12485956
